I just posted a blog about a very cool electronic artist from New Zealand
who has been putting out good records since 2001, but his latest, Standing
in Silence, might be a minor masterpiece. His name is Rhian Sheehan. The
blog has a link to an audio version with his music.

Profile of Beyond the Lakes:
Music from Beyond the Lakes was first aired on Easter Sunday evening, 1996.
Jerry Nelms began as the show's sole producer and host. Namdar Mogharreban
joined as co-host that summer and began producing his first programs in the
fall. And Anil Mehta and Brian Kearney joined as co-hosts just this year.
Beyond the Lakes airs eclectic new age and contemplative world music, both
ambient and rhythmic; electronic and acoustic; instrumental and vocal.
Beyond the Lakes is thematically programmed each week. Jerry's understanding
of "new age" music: it provides a space for the imagination, and, so, can
take many different forms but always functions in that way of allowing the
listener space for the play of the imagination.

June 14, 2009
“Summer Cathedral” (produced by Jerry Nelms)

The 19th-Century English biologist and statesman John Lubbock once wrote,
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day
listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the
sky, is hardly a waste of time.”

Sounds heretical in these days when everyone is expected to be doing
something. The problem is that we often fail to recognize that relaxing and
reflecting, in fact, does amount to doing something—especially in these
summer days of June.

British designer of gardens Gertrude Jekyll once called June “the time of
perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months,
and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever
fade.” Clearly thinking of early June, American poet Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow called summer “that beautiful season” with its air “[f]illed . .
. with a dreamy and magical light,” and where “the landscape / Lay as if new
created in all the freshness of childhood.”

In each of these descriptions, we find in summer something spiritual going
on, a spirituality that rest and reflection allows us to perceive and
participate in. I think writer Violette Leduc is right in calling summer a
“burning cathedral.”  Lying in the summer grass, watching the summer clouds;
sitting on a deck, watching the sun rise or set over the water; sitting on a
rock overlooking a deep, green valley in full flourish of summer; reclining
on a rooftop, counting falling stars—these are not wasted moments but are,
instead, ways of connecting with the deeper spirituality of existence.

Yet our senses of summer will differ with our experiences. “Summer,” poet
Archibald MacLeish once wrote, “is drawn blinds in Louisiana, long winds in
Wyoming, shade of elms and maple in New England.” Each of us has her or his
own list of defining features of summer. For North Carolina Outer Banks
surfer and writer Chris Bickford, for example, “Summer is a time of new
friends, new love, crazy nights, trips ‘down south,’ and barbecue
afternoons.” He goes on in his Travelogue blog from 2008, “Summer is a time
of hot sultry days and sea-breezy nights . . . a time of earth-shaking
thunderstorms that sweep in out of nowhere with cooling winds, chiaroscuro
skies, and a fireshow over the ocean at night. Summer is a time of
transitions, life changes, discoveries . . . .”

For me, having grown up in the deep South, summer is hot asphalt and hot,
sandy beaches, seagulls flying low just above the waves; muggy days,
sweat-damp shirts, and billowing white cumulus clouds against a clear blue
background of sky. Summer is dewy grass in the early morning and the smell
of freshly mowed lawns and pick-up baseball games in open meadows in the
afternoons. Summer is light breezes during the day and cool summer nights,
moonlight reflected on the water. “The summer night,” poet Wallace Stevens
tells us, “is like a perfection of thought.” And then, there’s summer
romance. As one Bern Williams once said, “If a June night could talk, it
would probably boast it invented romance.” Which reminds me that summer is
also the smell of suntan lotion on golden bare skin and the touch of skin to
skin, whether the entangling limbs of lovers or a mother putting suntan oil
on her child. Summer is the sound of children on the beach and distant
voices, and distant music, and the sound of waves and falling asleep to that
oscillation of the shoreline. It is summer colors: eggshell blue and
indigo, cumulus whites, and emerald greens, all slowly fading into deeper
shades in the night. Summer is also the call of tree frogs in the evening
and the hum of summer insects in meadow. Summer is the smell of barbecue
grills and the taste of potato salad.

These are the scenes in summer’s fresco, the stained glass windows of my
summer. Yours, no doubt, will include different features, tell different
stories, no less filled with the spirituality that lies just beneath the
surface, available to all of us, if we just take the time to look through
and see.

And so, this evening, let’s consider the spirituality of summer through a
program of acoustic and electronic ambient music entitled “Summer
Cathedral.” We begin with these fluid oscillations of ambient music
artist Dan Pound from Esoterica. Later, we’ll hear dreamy spacemusic by
John Lyell from Dimensions; and sparkling sonic textures by Laraaji from his
classic 1980 recording Day of Radiance. In our second half-hour, we’ll hear
graceful music for a summer evening walk by pianist/multi-instrumentalist
Bernward Koch, from Gentle Spirit; a melodic, orchestral piece by composer
Fred Lykes, arranged and orchestrated by Michael Hurley, from Lykes’s
recording StarBound; warm, ethereal music from keyboardist David Mauk’s 12
Months; deeply tranquil, nocturnal ambience from keyboardist Michelle
Ippolito’s In the Clouds; the transcendent, atmospheric title track to John
Foxx’s Cathedral Oceans; and more twilit, angelic ambience by Michelle
Ippolito.

We’re contemplating the spirituality of summer, “Summer Cathedral,” on our
program tonight, this early summer night Beyond the Lakes.

	 “Esoterica Part One”

Poet Emily Dickinson once wrote, “To see the Summer Sky / Is Poetry . . . ,”
while artist Kate Bergquist calls a summer meadow “the place of secret
magic.” Magic, poetry—summer touches us on many levels, a blend of the
mystical and the sensuous, the celestial and the earthy. We experience the
latter—the sensuous earthiness of summer—readily, but the spirituality of
summer requires reflection and study and interpretation. We may sense that
otherworldliness in the natural beauty of summer, but actually feeling it
takes time, and time is often something we compromise. Our lives are busy,
and you don’t experience the transcendent on-the-go. And so, tonight, we’re
listening to music for slowing down, for contemplation, for taking time to
consider summer’s spirituality, its magic, its poetry.

We begin our second hour with more warm, ethereal atmospherics from John
Foxx’s Cathedral Oceans. We’ll continue with twilit electronic textures by
Dwight Ashley, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and Tim Story from their
collaboration Errata; also, a short, lightly eccentric piece by the duo of
Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Mobius, who call themselves Cluster, from
their collaboration QUA; two moving selections from guitarist John Gregorius
’s Heaven and Earth; more offbeat but definitely serious music by Cluster
from QUA; and lush electronic oscillations by keyboardist Larry Kucharz from
Ambient Green Washes. In our final half-hour, Dan Pound returns with
another placid, vaporous track from Esoterica, followed by twilit textures
from Australian sound artist Rudy Adrian’s Desert Realms, and more lovely,
summertime music by Kevin Kendle from Pure Dreaming. And we’ll end this
evening’s program with more summertime ambience from Rudy Adrian’s Desert
Realms.

This version of "Constant", by Mister Vapor, uses blurred and effected sferics,
which are sounds emitted by the earth. Less stable than the earliest of
Constants, "Constant 25" nonetheless provides a nice, consistent floating sound
bed perfect for deep listening.

"Constant" pieces, for those unfamiliar, are musical works based on being as
minimal as possible-- finding the least possible thing necessary for listening.
These pieces tend to be drone in nature. The original Constant appeared on
Webbed Hand Records ( www.webbedhandrecords.com ), and others have been released
at the TZP Drone Company ( http://www.archive.org/details/tzpdc ) and also here
at Treetrunk.

"Music from Beyond the Lakes," the contemplative music show that has been
airing via WDBX, 91.1 and www.wdbx.org since 1996, is currently going
through some changes. We've added two new DJs in addition to Jerry and
Namdar: Anil Mehta and Brian Kearney. Our intention is for each of us to
program and host a show a month. To facilitate our programming, we ask that
promotional music and material be sent directly to each of the producers
separately. If you prefer, you can send promotional music and material only
to me, Jerry, and I will pass it along to the appropriate producer, but this
can delay getting the music programmed and aired. Still, we will make every
effort to get the music to the right person as soon as possible.

Please be advised that the old contact address (114 Magnolia Lane,
Carbondale, IL) is NO LONGER my address. See below for the new address.

Below are the street and email addresses of each producer, along with a
profile of the music that each producer will be programming:

Anil Mehta, Apt. 15, 302 S. Poplar St., Carbondale, Illinois, USA 62901.
Email: anil@....
Classical Indian music, Sitar, Flute, sarod, violin, african drums and all
percursion, Asian, classical, neo-classical, world music ambient,
spacemusic, tamboura, tabla, didjeridoo, Jaltarang (rhythm from water filled
bowls), orchestra. My favorites are: Percursion and orchestra, and Tablas.

Brian Kearney, 16 Wind Wood Rd., Carbondale, Illiinois, USA 62902.
Email: bkearney@....
All kinds of guitar music: solo and ensemble acoustic and electric
(non-ambient).

Jerry Nelms, 205 Sunset Cove, Columbus, Ohio 43202. [NOTE: I am currently
commuting between Columbus, OH, and Carbondale, IL. The fastest way to get
the music to me is by sending it to the Columbus, Ohio, address.]
Email: nelmsgerald@...; gnelms@....
Electronic ambience, spacemusic, ambient-acoustic, "traditional" newage
(such as the old Windham Hill music), ensemble music, solo piano, piano +
keyboards, piano + ensemble, contemplative guitar (such as Will Ackerman),
harp, cello, violin, oboe, English horn, other European/American
instruments, any contemplative vocal, contemplative singer/songwriter,
Gregorian chant and other group vocals (such as Libera; Anuna),

music/newage fusion, smooth jazz, "environmental" jazz (such as Jan
Garbarek; John McLaughlin), classical sitar (such as Ravi Shankar).

Namdar Mogharreban, 501 S. Deer Lake Drive West, Carbondale, Illinois
62901-5229.
Email: namdar@....
Middle Eastern, Eastern European, Mediterranean, African, Native American,
Central and South American, world music fusion, electronic chill, rhythmic
percussion, ney, oud, flamenco guitar, world music chant, smooth jazz.

Please note that these changes are not intended to inhibit artists from
sending us their music. If you cannot afford to send more than one CD to
us or if you are uncertain who to send your music to, please do not hesitate
to contact me at nelmsgerald@... or simply send your promotional music
to me at the Columbus, Ohio address.

Once again, as we have always done, we thank the artists for making the
music that enriches our world. And we thank the music promoters and music
labels for bringing us that music.

We look forward to the years ahead bringing Music from Beyond the Lakes to
our listeners.

Remember, we can be heard Sundays, 8:00-10:00pm, Central Time (that's 9-11pm
Eastern; 7-9pm Mountain; 6-8 Pacific; 2-4pm in Honolulu; 1-3am in London;
2-4am in Oslo; 4-6am in Moscow; 5-7am in Tehran; 6-8am in New Delhi;
10am-12pm in Tokyo; and 11am-1pm in Sydney). You can hear us through WDBX,
91.1 FM, community radio for southern Illinois--and beyond! Go to
www.wdbx.org and click on "Listen." Beyond the Lakes is streamed live every
Sunday.
