Josephine Sunday obscurities in Musica   Message List

A while back I was in contact with fellow
Spectropopper, Mr. Martin Roberts, the man in the
know of all things Jack Nitzsche, regarding a couple
of odd Josephine Sunday 45's that predate her Tower
disc, 'YOU WON'T EVEN KNOW HER NAME'. While not much
information is on the labels of either of them that
pertains to their production, it's obvious that they
were recorded in Hollywood at Gold Star. To my ears,
I had a sense that Jack Nitzsche, although not
credited, had his hand in the recording of the music
track. The arrangement and sound is similar to those
non-Spector singles which he was constructing during
the period of 1962-1964. Martin's knowledgable and
respected opinion was that he believed that Nitzsche
was probably not involved with these.

Maybe someday the question of writer/producer/
arranger for these two discs will come to light.
Until then.....

Josephine Sunday - EVER LITTLE TEAR /
Such a Little While
(Birthstone 1032) - 1964 (could be late '63)
writers: The O'Jay's
An H.B. Production (H. B. Barnum)

The O'Jays are on background vocals which could
indicate the group also recorded a version of their
own and Josephine Sunday's vocals were inserted. The
Gold Star Studio echo chamber is wider open on this
mix in comparison to the Pinnacle disc. This release
is about 8 seconds longer than the Pinnacle disc.
The flip is a throw away, 1950's styled ballad
written by Jean Curtis and Josephine Sunday Visaya.

Josephine Sunday - HE'S NOT MINE ANYMORE /
I Won't Be Hurt Anymore
(Pinnacle 1722) - 4/64 (Dated by delta number)
No writer, producer, arranger credited.

The inclusion of a banjo plucking out the familiar
'NEEDLES AND PINS' riff was added to the same
backing track as the Birthstone disc. This
production has a new title and lyrics. The
forgettable flip side is another 50's type ballad
written by Jerry Riopelle. The music publisher on
both the A and B sides is credited to Maverick Music
Inc., Riopelle's own company. This leads me to
assume that Riopelle was the writer of the new title
and lyrics of the A-side as well as the producer of
this release. The Blossoms are on background vocals.
