I was finally able to get this one out to musica.

Rydell had 3 or 4 singles on Reprise from
1967-68, including this one, and "The Lovin' Things"
(the Grass Roots hit), all non-LP, and fairly scarce.
Hope you enjoy.

Hi Everyone,

I've noticed in past posts people have asked this question,
but I haven't really found an answer to it...

I'm looking for the lyrics to the "Leader of the Pack" musical,
in particular "Rock of Rages", so I can perform this song for
an exam I have coming up. Does anyone know where I can find
these lyrics?

Thanks for your time!

Hi everyone,

Finally, it's time for me to add my two cents' worth, even
if it's a week late! My apologies, but life has been quite
crazy since my return to Manchester, and to all involved,
please be assured this wasn't a reflection of my enthusiasm
in the slightest...

One year ago, if you'd told me that in August 2002 I'd start
performing again - and singing my favourite girl group songs
no less! - I would have laughed it off.

If you'd told me that a year on, I'd be singing in New York,
surrounded by friends and illustrious 60s guests, followed by
a cocktail party the next evening with Maxine Brown, I would
have been dialling 911 and telling them to send a straightjacket
sharpish!

I never fail to be amazed at the amazing chain of events that
have taken place for me since last August, but this had to be
the grandaddy of them all. Everyone has summed up the music,
the atmosphere and the events so I won't repeat that too much.
But for this little girl from Toronto, via Manchester, then onto
London and New York, this was a total dream come true and I can
only express my heartfelt thanks to everyone for supporting me
along the way.

Infinite love and thanks to Sheila, not only for taking on the
task of organising the event (I know how stressful it can be!)
but for being such a wonderful friend in the ten years we've
known each other.

And to Mick, Phil, Martin, the UK 'poppers - for their
continuous encouragement over the past year, and for insisting
that I had to get to NYC even when I thought it was impossible!

Love to my email friends with whom I finally got the chance to
spend some quality time with - Keiko-chan, David A. Young and
Phil Milstein. You are all fabulous and great fun, and I only
wish I could hang out with you more often.

And how wonderful to also become acquainted with names that
were familiar to me, but who I'd never spoken to - such as
Country Paul (what a pro!), Mark F. and John Clemente. (If I
have missed out your name, please forgive me - some of the
weekend was a blur, not helped by all those Cosmos at the
Slipper Room!)

It was an honour to be there, and even more of an honour to
sing for all of you. I hope I did the party (and Lesley and
Felice) justice!

See you next time - maybe Amber will be on parole by then...

love,
elisabeth xx

I wouldn't mind hearing that one myself. I guess that it
would be the male version of "She Don't Understand Him Like
I Do". That is my favorite Jackie song. She got a lot of
airplay here in Cincinnati with that one and her version of
"Oh Boy". Although I had heard "Buddy" previously, they were
my real introduction to Jackie. It caused this mostly singles
buyer to go out and buy the LP "Breakin' It Up on the Beatles
Tour", which still gets a lot of play in my house. But alas,
it is one that hasn't made it to CD yet.

There was an amazing LP released on Colpix in the mid sixties
that I cannot get out of my mind. It was a full LP of pop
songs of the day done in a "beautiful music" style by Stu
Phillips. Percy Faith, and the Hollyridge Strings were doing
the same concept at the time, with great success, but this LP
by Stu Phillips was in a totally different realm, musically
speaking. Super lush full orchestra, and dreamy chorus, with
incredible arrangements, very different from either Faith or
Hollyridge recordings, put this into the stratosphere
of "beautiful music".

The haunting way Stu took pop songs and strung them out into
amazingly significant mini-works-of-art, still leaves me
breathless.

Unfortunately, the LP I had is long gone, and it never seems
to appear on CD. Anyone else have any comments regarding this
wonderful recording, or know of where it might be available on
Compact Disc?

If you could post 'Max' to musica I would be very grateful!
I'm a big fan of 60s spy TV shows and get an especially big
kick out of tie-ins like the inevitable gimmick records. '99'
is great, btw, for anyone who has not heard it. A great
smoldering lounge song.

Are there other songs that actually dealt with spy-subjects
from the actors of this genre? Off the top of my head, I can't
think of any. The Patrick Macnee/Honor Blackmon one is great,
even becoming a hit again when re-issued in the late 80s/early 90s.
There are more than a few 'golden throat' type LPs from this area
that I'm sure I don't need to name. I especially like the singles
that used the catch-phrase prominently, such as Telly Savalas'
'Who Loves Ya Baby?'. Also, if anyone has the 'Where's the Beef'
cash-in song and wants to post it, I wouldn't complain. I can hear
the groans already...

FYI: Both Barbara Feldon tracks are on a Don Adams compilation CD
issued by Raven titled "Get Smart!" Also, the original RCA single
came in a picture sleeve.

Hey la,

Maxie has no desire to own a computer. Neither has he any wish to
be in possession of a J Cloth. Damp or otherwise. If you want the
record finding, may I suggest you enlist the services of those
two birds from TV's How Clean Is Your House? And should these
comments find their way back to Mr Baumgart, I shall know exactly
who the blabbermouth is! :-)

I don't have the Myrtelles 45. In fact, I don't want one because
it isn't very good. However, many years ago, Ian put both sides
on a cassette for me. Then he swapped the record for some shiny
beads. However, I still have that tape. I shall endeavour to
locate it and make mp3s. Expect them to appear in musica when
space permits. Watch this space.

Hey la,

Thank you so much for posting 'He's Not There' by Sunny. I
absolutely love it! It never ceases to amaze me how much good
material there is out there on acetate. Problem is that much of
it is uncredited.

I recently picked up an acetate recording by Lyn Cornell called
'As Long As You Keep Loving Me'. As far as I can tell this was
never commercially released by Lyn.

Thanks again though for letting me hear the Sunny track.

Thanks very much for the information on Rosetta Hightower's
appearance at the Rocket in London last year. Hopefully this
will not have been a one off and we can look forward to more
live music by Rosetta (if anyone spots her name anywhere please
do let me know). I'd lost touch with what Rosetta was doing and
over the last few years have taken the opportunity to ask Barry
St. John, Doris Troy, Madeline Bell and Ruby James if they knew
what had become of her but none of them did.

It's good to know Rosetta is still around! Check out her album

Sorry if I'm a bit dense here. So... does your friend have
the TV advertised ones... or are you talking about boots?

How long are the TV advertised "legit" DVDs? Quality: sound/
picture?

I remember the old shows. At first I had to argue with my
dad as to what we would watch in that particular hour... he
was bigger than me then. Star Trek or something else was on
at the same time, and being a very young hippy punk, it was
sacrilegious to watch Dino. But after a few viewings I noticed
the "Goldiggers..." Yeow... seriously sexy babes. It didn't
take much to get me to watch the show after that.

Now I actually really "dig" Dino himself, man.

I had to crop it a bit in the scanning because there is a small

I sent it to Brian, of Brian's Drive-In Theater site a while back,

Yes!

For all you completists out there I've compiled (with the help of
several in-the-know S'Poppers) two CDs worth of Mark Wirtz produced
45s from the 60s. All of the songs, with the exception of one, have
not appeared on any CD/CDR. In essense this collection is a
continuation of the Mark Wirtz Anthology I started last year.

As most of you know by now it's been one of my "chores" to expose
(yes, perhaps over expose?) Mark's work to others. As I've come to
find out there are people all over the world with the same objective.
In fact Keiron Tyler, a writer and CD compiler in the UK, reports
that his full length article about Mark will be appearing in an
upcoming Mojo magazine. In addition, a Japaese fan sent several songs
previously unknown to me. These songs have apparently been making the
rounds in Japanese Mark Wirtz collector circles for some time. Pretty
cool to find these pockets of interest.

Anyway, write me off list if you'd like to know more. In the mean
time thanks to Phil, Martin, Harvey, Paul, Luis and other's who dug
deep into their collections.

Hello Albabe,

Sorry I didn't make myself clear: BUY, BUY, BUY!

The complete story as I know it:
Worldwide, the only "Dean Martin TV Show" DVD available for purchase
is called "That's Amore". Great sound and picture quality, it plays
for over an hour and is very, very highly recommended.

In various States of the USA, regional releases have been made
available to test the public's willingness (or otherwise) to buy more
product from Dean Martin's TV Show's. Again Sue (and I) would advise
purchase and if you don't mind Sue would be interested to know the
shows on sale in your area - off list perhaps!

Besides these official releases, there is an underground market in
'grey area' videos from the TV show. At present it is the only way to
see acts such as the Righteous Brothers and Jan and Dean etc. The
quality is not as good and they can be expensive but are also great
fun.

Two other TV series' hosted or starring Dean Martin are also available
on DVD or video: "The Colgate Hour" (Dean and Jerry Lewis) and "The
Roasts". Both, depending on your sense of humour, can be quite funny
but are not essential for a Dino way of life.

Reading your Dino introduction, I'd suggest you owe your dad a copy of
"That's Amore" as a Thank You!

Martin

Salisbury's 'Do Unto Others' (SCM 9001). The Sandy CD appears to be
mostly the Poptones issues of a couple of years back, with some that
were on the later Revola issue of his, but the Millenium has some
new tracks of mostly Michael Fennelly/Joey Stec composition. Both
are on a new US label Sound City Entertainment. Several of the
Millenium tarcks are full on Critters-type summer sounds, and if
they are demos as seems likely, then they were excellent ones! Both
will make parteners to the Sundazed 3 Disc set for a pretty complete

I have another song titled "October Country" by an artist named
Michael McGinnis. It appears on his LP "Welcome To My Mind" on
the Forward label from 1969. If anyone has any info regarding
this LP please let me know, I haven't been able to turn up much
on it other than an entry on a Japanese website that is only
partially in English.

The "October Country" song on this album is an outstanding track
with an extremely melancholy, mournful, almost apocalyptic feel.
I especially like the horns on the song, which are reminiscent of
the horns used on Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man". Several years
after finding this LP I found that the song's lyrics are actually
a poem by Ray Bradbury from his book "The October Country".
However, this is not acknowledged in the songwriters credits.

Another noteworthy song on the LP, called "Orange Ice", is the
most upbeat, psychedelic track and is another superb tune. This
song has a childlike, whimsical atmosphere that still manages to
sound slightly sinister, and clocks in at less than two minutes.

For the most part the album is what I would call country rock,
not as psychedelic as the title "Welcome To My Mind" would lead
one to believe...the backing musicians are former members of
The Moon and Colours. If anyone else has run across this or has
any info on who McGinnis is, please post here or e-mail me.

Best,

Art Longmire

I'm pleased Ken liked the Sunny acetate playing on musica.
At the same time as acquiring this and several other UK demo
recordings I bought 3 ten inch female-voiced "Screen Gems
Columbia" demos, recorded at "Dick Charles Recording Studios",
NYC. Musically only one is of interest, "Run To My Lovin'
Arms". The song was of course released; perhaps best known
in the UK as sung by Billy Fury and in the US by April Young.
A good T. Powers - G. Fischoff song which I feel with a better
production could have been a fair sized hit. I've no idea who
the vocalist is and no other information to go with the disc,
bar the comment written in pen, "Female Version". Nice piano!
Now playing at musica.

"ay, there's the rub;"

I assumed everyone knew what I was talking about... I should
go back to teaching, just to re-educate myself on how to
communicate simple basic ideas to others... doh. I apologize
for my ignorance and lack of said ability.

I purchased the "That's Amore" DVD a short while back. Great
stuff. A bunch of interviews with Dino's business partner
from years ago. And bits and pieces from Dino's Variety show.
There's also a few really great live numbers of him performing
with some hip orchestra way back in the olden days.

With that said... Here in the colonies we have these *very
interesting* late night advertisements on cable TV... in fact
we have channels that do nothing but show these half hour to
one hour long advertisements disguised as commentaries or
"reports" on everything from scrotal ointment to.... Dino
(...and beyond).

The ad that I saw a few nights back advertised 7 (seven)
separate DVDs (or tapes) that were supposedly episodes of the
Dean Martin Variety Show.

I called their 1-800 number and didn't get that much information
from their friendly but very uniformed order-taker. He sorta
informed me that:

They are $19.95 each. Except the first one which they discount
for $9.95.

They are 1 (one) hour each. Which, to me, is a vast waste of
the possible 6 hours of very high res "superbit" plus 5.1 &
stereo sound that is available on double (triple) layered DVDs.
But it's all commerce.

They are (and I quote) "probably compilations" rather than
entire shows.

After you receive the first *single* disc, they then send you 2
at a time, every other month, for $19.95 each, which amounts to
a whopping $39.90 for 2 hours of yummy but very expensive stuff.

Has anyone ordered these discs yet?

peace,
albabe
