EMMA AND MELANIE C'S TOP OF THE POPS INTERVIEW

UK (TOP OF THE POPS) - Emma and Melanie C were on Top
Of The Pops for a performance of their new solo
singles and they had the opportunity to have an
interview together where they talk about their solo
careers and life after Spice Girls.

TOTP: How long has it been since you two were being
interviewed together?
Mel: We were thinking about this, and I can't quite
remember! I think it might have been at the MTV Awards
in Stockholm...
Emma: My memory is terrible, I can't remember that!
Mel: You must do. Me and Mel went in one room and you
and Victoria went in the other, because we had to
split up the interviews. And we all got a bit drunk!
Emma: Oh yeah! There were so many interviews to do, we
thought we could half the time it would take by
splitting up into groups.
Mel: By then, we'd kinda learned how to do these
things!

TOTP: Do you keep an eye on one another's careers?
Mel and Emma: Absolutely! [giggles all round]
Emma: We text one another and stuff like that. We make
sure one another are happy and when our singles come
out we wish one another good luck.
Mel: And buy them! They're the only singles I buy,
ex-Spice Girl singles. I don't buy singles otherwise.

TOTP: You've known one another for many years now, do
you think either of you have changed?
Emma: No, we're the same!
Mel: Oh, what's that mean...'we're the same!' [teases
Emma]
Emma: I didn't mean it like that. [giggles]
Mel: It's funny though, because I do feel like I've
changed, but when I see you it's like you haven't
changed.
Emma: I know, I feel the same, because you seem to be
the same person. I guess we're just getting on a bit
now!

TOTP: Do you miss anything about being in a band?
Mel: No! [laughs]
Emma: There is one thing that I miss though. I miss
not having people to share things with, when the press
are really focusing on you.
Mel: We did use to have a laugh. It's not that it's
lonely as a solo artist, there's always people around
you to support you. The press attention being solely
on you though can be quite difficult to deal with.

TOTP: Are you surprised by the way all your lives have
turned out?
Mel: One thing that does surprise me is that there
hasn't been so much success for us. I think we came
from such a phenomenon that I think we all deserved to
express ourselves as individual artists in the music
industry. I don't think we were really given that
chance.
Emma: I think people judged us negatively straight
away when we came out with solo projects. It felt like
there were some that didn't want to see us develop and
grow up.
Mel: The media were very cynical at first, but I think
we're slowly proving them wrong.

TOTP: Does David and Victoria's antics surprise you?
Mel: Nothing David and Victoria have done has ever
surprised me...
Emma: The thing is, I don't really read all the papers
and stories about them. So I only know David and
Victoria as husband and wife, as a mother and father.
They're a happy couple.
Mel: And you say 'do they surprise us', but they're
only doing what any other celebrity does. They go to
awards and parties and there's nothing surprising
about that. The surprising thing is the amount of
coverage they get when they do these things.
Emma: I think that surprises them too sometimes.
Mel: Oh, I don't know about that!

TOTP: Any regrets?
Mel: What is it they say...Je ne regrette rien! ['I
regret nothing'...in dodgy French accent!]
Emma: Oh la la!
Mel: How can we? We're both sitting here now with our
own solo careers and think we'd both admit that we
wouldn't be were it not for all that we achieved with
the Spice Girls.
Emma: And we're very happy!
Mel: And very proud as well!
Emma: I'm very proud of you!
Mel: And I'm very proud of you too! [Eww! They've gone
all gushy! - Ed.]

TOTP: Any regrets that you didn't meet David Beckham
first?
Mel: No, he's lovely, but he plays for Man. United! He
was never my cup of tea! Was he your's Em?
Emma: No, but as soon as they met that was it!
