Greetings Friends,
I can't believe it has taken me this long to get to DR--home of so much music I love: Bachata, Merengue, y mas. I am staying in Boca Chica, just 20 miles from the capital, and the oldest city in the Americas, Santo Domingo. For a computer & travel nerd like me, this trip has been totally last minute, seat-of-the-pants! I didn't book my flight until the night before I arrived. Then I took a bus today from Boca Chica to Santo Domingo with no map, no plan, no clue--just a smile, a little Spanish, and my 29" unicycle. Needless to say, I've had a great time and made lots of friends along the way :-)
It is of course really hot and humid, so I'm going to make this quick.
It is very interesting to be in this country, which, according to the Dominicans, has over 100 players in the "grand liga" (i.e. Major League Baseball), during the playoffs. Every night, little bars have their televisions tuned to the playoffs (Minnesota v. Chicago White Sox; Anaheim/L.A. Angels v. Boston Red Sox; etc.) with people (mostly men) yelling at the sceen cheering on their team. How amazing that a country of less than 10 milliion could place so many players in the big leagues.
The other interesting thing has been the universal, unsolicited criticism I have heard about George Bush whenever someone learns I am from the United States, reaffirming my view that he is the worst President in my lifetime, and perhaps in our history. Santo Domingo has avenues named after George Washington, Lincoln, John F. Kennedy. George W. Bush--don't hold your breath, there is not going to be a street named after you here.
The unicycle has been a big hit, and I have been give lessons between "Presidentes" (the local Dominican beer).
Abrazos,
Jim
