"Using the same band as last yea, Mike Harrison was in even better vocal form, wailing
with abandon and supported by his adept musicians who didn't put a
musical foot wrong the whole night. Whereas last year was split into
two chronological sets – pre Spooky and Spooky – tonight was more of a feel fest, with old favourites cropping up all over the place. Lots
of Ray Charles, of course, an overhaul for the MC5 chestnut `Rambling
Rose', Larry Williams' `Slow Down', a spot of Art in the form of `I
Wanna Be Free' and more besides. A power cut in the middle of the
first set did nothing to dent the band's confidence, or the
audience's enthusiasm as, undaunted, the guitarist got out a banjo
and Harrison wailed on harmonica in pitch darkness. Returning for a
second stretch, Harrison introduced some Spooky Tooth classics,
although fewer than last year, perhaps reflecting a growing
confidence in the band's approach. `Waiting For The Wind', `That Was
Only Yesterday', `The Wrong Time' and the sublime `Chains on my
Heart' were all in evidence, as was the Lennon/McCartney `We Can Work It Out', complete with false start. All in all, evidence that this
unique singer is singing better than ever. According to his
