STAR'S END Update 08.05.07

A single trip from evening to morning is chronicled on the album
MOLENTRAAT, by Eric T'Sas and Matthew Florianz. The seven
pieces presented are extracts from a long improvisation,
performed over the course of one night and morning in an
apartment in The Hague. The tracks, named after the time of day
at which they were recorded, present a rich variety of moods
even as the artists work with a small palette of keyboard textures.
Ripples of melody and a thoughtful piano solo open up the first
and best piece, "Molenstraat 16:30". Live street noise is mixed in
from time to time - shouting children, thunderclaps, and the
grumble of wheels turning on the stones below. The listener
drifts into deep contemplation during the blissful two tracks that
begin the disk, imagining a city full of people hurrying to their
homes, turning their backs on the dusk and thinking of sleep.
"Molenstraat 19:28" moves into darkness, a somber piano
phrase couched in dark, threatening drones. Through careful
melodic twists and turns, the nighttime segment of the album
imparts the emotions of a long and sleepless night -
introspection and languor with pieces of fear and loneliness.
Melodic themes from the start of the disc return on the uplifting
conclusion "Molenstraat 07:33" - the distant ringing of bells tell
us to get up and begin a new day. MOLENTRAAT gives the
listener a sparse and beautiful assortment of music, played with
restraint, crystallizing a place and time in our minds, even though
it may be far away.

The 08.05.07 edition of STAR'S END will be mixed and
programmed by guest DJ Scott Kelly. Kelly's first experiences
with the STAR'S END radio program came while in high school,
when spacemusic became the soundtrack to late-night
suburban excursions in a borrowed minivan. He began
collecting and playing records at the age of 16, and got his first
radio airtime in 2000 as a guest DJ on the show "Sonic
Evolution," on Princeton University's radio station, WPRB. Soon
after that, Kelly enrolled at Drexel University and joined the
campus radio station, WKDU, where he hosted his own weekly
show and became seriously involved with the annual Electronic
Music Marathon. While gigging throughout his college years at
clubs, lounges, and bars, Kelly's music collection grew to
encompass a wide range of dance, IDM, and chill-out styles. His
interest in DJ'ing ambient and spacemusic has its roots back in
2001, when he was handed a copy of Manuel Gottsching's
Inventions For Electric Guitar.

After spinning at WKDU's Electronic Music Marathon in 2003 and
again in 2004, Chuck van Zyl extended the offer to Kelly to do a
guest DJ spot on STAR'S END. During finals week, Kelly
produced an hour mix of music which was included on the
12.19.04 broadcast. As that night's show wrapped up, it was
agreed that Kelly would make four more mixes, one to "fit" into
each hour of the show. Kelly finished school in 2005 and moved
to Baltimore, all the while working on collecting music and
gathering five hour's worth of material for STAR'S END.

In his mixes, Kelly seeks to present a seamless blend of tracks
drawn from the more recent years of ambient music - where
influences creep in from Detroit techno, post-rock, dub, and
psychedelic trance. His relentless search for new music has
resulted in a mix of artists and works mostly new to STAR'S
END. Some tracks appear in the mix for only a few seconds,
while others linger and unfold multiple moods and motifs.

From the energetic atmospheres of 1 AM to the bright melodies
of 6 AM, STAR'S END is pleased to feature Scott Kelly and his
unique ambient music mix on this week's edition.

Tune in this weekend for music mixed by STAR'S END listener
Scott Kelly
