STAR'S END Update 06.08.08   Message List

Through his music, David Parsons has provided listeners with
visits to many a far-flung place. Influences from his world travels
turn up in all of his works. On SURYA (64'48"), Parsons leads us
on the most fascinating journey - into dreams and the mind. A
kind of Eastern Ambient Noir, this album presents five intensely
felt atmospheric meditations. Parsons' electronic temple virtually
resonates with cerebral energy. Crystal bowls, digital chants and
an ever-present deep and knowing drone endow this CD with a
ceremonial feel. Slow drum blasts and sustaining metallic pads
add to the mystery as minimal soundscapes unfold in floating
blackness. Hopefully this work will not be mistaken for yet
another lazy drone album. Parsons' methods are masterful and
his philosophy mystical - and SURYA is the perfect integration of
the two. A great deal of attention is paid to the subtle sound
design and the slowing pace. Once the eyes close this
experience becomes less about music and more about places
within. SURYA may begin in Asia, but it ends in the deepest
recesses of the mind. Parsons' inner landscape is darker than
any found on Earth.

Tune into STAR'S END this weekend for music from the live CD
SURYA by David Parsons

The Gatherings Concert Series presents an Analogue
Sequencer Workshop on Sunday 8 June 2008 at 7pm at St
Mary's Hamilton Village, 3916 Locust Walk, Philadelphia, PA.

The Sequencer Workshop will be headed by veteran synthesist
Terry Furber, a leading talent in the field of home synthesizer
design as well as in music performance with his Spacemusic
duo Orbital Decay. Demonstrating on an array of gear, which
includes two Synthesizers.com q960 Sequential Controller
modules and a refurbished Moog 1P modular synthesizer,
Furber will discuss the history, technology, equipment and basic
concepts involved in using an Analogue Sequencer and the
realization of music. Attendees will have an opportunity to
observe close-up the workings of a sequencer, hear how
patterns are created, modified and turned into music and learn
how these means might be used in their own creative
endeavors. Whether you are a beginner, a music fan or have
advanced knowledge, you will come away from this workshop
with a better understanding of the sequencer, the people who
use them and deeper insight into and better appreciation of the
many genres of music inspired by the synthesizer.
