Jeff Greinke realizes works inspired by something outside of music. The
intricacies of climate weather and time mimic the feelings he carries within.
His CD VIRGA (55'36") strives to give musical form to the sensation evoked by
our planet's atmospheric activities. Applying a classicist form to his
succinctly brief works Greinke produces 12 formal, fully composed and arranged
Electro-ambient chamber music pieces. The listener's grasp on time weakens as in
the span of a few minutes untold hours may seem to pass. The sound is sometimes
airy, never air-headed as the majority of the tracks posses a somber, elegiac
sense. Greinke even references a few pieces from an earlier CD "Soundtracks".
With synthesizers alongside mellow trumpet and cello lines, VIRGA's classical
influences lead the music toward territory inhabited by the likes of Harold
Budd, Tim Story and K Leimer. With no exaggerated expressive effects, Greinke
follows his contemporaries in simplicity, restraint, dignity, proportion and
interest in form. Grenike is an artist working to engage us with our deepest
emotions. His music unites us with one another - as not only are we connected to
this music but connected by it.

Greinke

The Tangent Project plays with the internalized classicism of musicians who have
been listening to Spacemusic even in their sleep. For the duo of Jeff Coulter
(synthesizers, sequencers) and Harrison McKay (guitar) music best provides the
visionary gateways that open on to bigger worlds. Their studio CD SURFACE
(70'48") is a spacey work that plunges the mind of the listener into deep space.
An album as good as its best parts, SURFACE is meant to fire-up the imagination
as well as comfort and inspire. Their four detailed electronic tone poems hold
nothing back. While certified synth-wiz Coulter creates a foundation of shifting
sonic textures and skipping sequencer runs, McKay's expressive guitar leads
expand and recede. Delightfully processed and rounded, his cerebral performances
move from prog-inspired virtuosity to gentle ambient sighs. The pair keeps their
sonic weirdness in check with a range of airy, hallucinatory aural designs and a
beautiful union of sounds. An equal amount of compositional rigor and free-form
experimentation went into these four seemingly straightforward musical
head-trips. Each one relates its own vivid atmosphere and mood - communicated on
a cosmic scale. Surface is everything one desires from great Spacemusic:
exhilarating, startlingly fresh and rewarding upon repeated listening.

Jeffrey Koepper's internal wiring seems at odds with modern times. In a culture
where the ringtone passes for art and music is frozen and compressed into
ninety-nine cent sound files Koepper's expressive use of Electronic Music
equipment boldly aligns with the mechanisms of the mind rather than mere
fleeting trends. His precisely programmed swirling Spacemusic seduces listeners
into a kaleidoscopic inner-sanctum where time is suspended and the outside world
fades away. His CD QUADRANTEON (72'25") was realized using a wonderful set of
musical colors made on vintage analog gear - a process of going back to go
further. The rounded tones of synth lead lines hover and float above
ever-changing sequencer territory. With the structural divisions less clear-cut
the four interconnected pieces progress through a mindscape of phase-shifted
pads, windy white noise sweeps and contrapuntal fantasies of mechanistic
synchronization. Koepper's echoing tone patterns capture the kinetic energy of
traveling through space - this music without sharp dramatic climaxes is all
about the journey. Koepper is excited by all that is going on in his music, and
its features that seem to point far into the future.

Bernhard Wöstheinrich speaks in his own musical voice. Providing a unique
perspective in his increasingly frequent collaborations in the DiN label
catalogue, Wöstheinrich has quietly been playing with and influencing some of
our community's most interesting talents. On ARCADIA BOREALIS (63'23") Erik
Wøllo takes his turn. His introspective approach to music results in the
distillation of emotion while Wöstheinrich's private symbolism represents an
urge for self-expression and release. The musical arc of this CD moves from
curiously beautiful on the opening tracks to beautifully curious on the closing
few. Each of the 12 pieces is fully formed and thoughtful. The more energetic
songs are driven by firm beats amidst simultaneously sounding musical lines.
With harmonies trailing behind melodies these shimmering works draw their power
from the arctic regions upon which this music is based - informing the dramatic
outline of ARCADIA BOREALIS. As this album plays out it slows down, with each
work disintegrating into swirling unanchored abstractions of sustained tonal
ambiance. An intriguing listening experience, ARCADIA BOREALIS benefits from
great conceptualization, arranging and musicianship. Together this duo pulls off
their first collaboration with startling brilliance.

Tune in this weekend to STAR'S END for music from ARCADIA BOREALIS, the new
collaboration between Erik Wollo and Berhnard Wosthenrich

On HIDDEN WORLD BEYOND (62'46") moderns and ancients mix in ways that are
sometimes haunted, sometimes in contrast, but always beautifully crafted.
Electronic musician Jonn Serrie and flute player Gary Stroutsos are the two
vulnerable spirits playing on this sequel to their first collaboration "Hidden
World". Stroutsos' native flutes are played out front pushing through reverb.
His solos tell us the story of longing for home - the basics of tonality. Serrie
also possesses a more melodic imagination, but here he provides ambiance and
atmosphere. Surrounding Stroutsos' breathy flute tones with wispy pads, low
synth drones and electronic glitter Serrie's textural layers lend to this music
a sense of cosmic expansion. This and subtle percussion play, evocative
environmental recordings along with intelligent
arrangement and pacing imbue HIDDEN WORLD BEYOND with a sense of the mystical -
sending these ten love songs to the universe on a through line across genres and
styles as well as mood and tone.

Please tune into STAR'S END this weekend for music from the Jonn Serrie & Gary
Stroutsos and their new CD HIDDEN WORLD BEYOND

Asking, "Where are these guys coming from?" is always a good musical question,
but with Marconi Union, "Where are they going?" might be more appropriate. Their
CD TOKYO (39'59") seems born of post-rock dance music, yet its digital
atmospheres and cerebral beats point to a cool hi-fi cyberworld still in our
future. Rhythms hiss and spark above a softly throbbing bass pulse as clicks,
pops and digital detritus circulate amidst steamy drones and static pads. As the
seven songs roll by, held back with sparsely scored harmonies, the music
explores a range of forms and variations. Synthetic sounds mingle with guitar
and organ while mangled samples coalesce into patterns producing a select set of
darkened musical colors. TOKYO is a mesmeric and magical album - almost a map of
moods. Subtly adventurous, Marconi Union's swirling somber music seduces the
listener with its unique musical language - leaving its essential mystery
intact.

Both Jeff Coulter and Harrison McKay have been kicking around the Philadelphia
Spacemusic scene for 25 years or so. Coulter, along with Chris Schwartz, played
in the cosmic music duo Tangent, while elsewhere McKay composed ethereal music
for dance in addition to his solo Ambient works.

More recently these two have been working together, experimenting with sounds
and textures reminiscent of the classics Zeit and Phaedra - yet their approach
incorporates their own unique sensibilities and outlook. Coulter's sequencer
runs, synth pads and melodies all move at different speeds while McKay's
processed guitar alternates between emitting atmospheric textures and liquid
lead solos. Their realizations are in constant motion, either moving forward or
churning in stillness, or at some indistinct level in between. Coulter and McKay
explore areas of both dark and light. Their music a culmination of a lifetime
worth of experience.

Tune in to STAR'S END this weekend for music from "Surface", a soon to be
released CD by The Tangent Project

On ARCTURUS (61'05"), the live album from Arc, the duo of Ian Boddy and Mark
Shreeve sounds a bit more like Shreeve's side project Redshift in that the
pieces are arranged a bit looser and explore themes a bit longer than on
previous Arc albums. "Part One" (21'09") and Part Two" (24'11") transpire in
classic Spacemusic fashion. Out of the all-humbling darkness rises mechanistic
reiterating sequencer riffs intertwined with strident, propulsive rhythms. The
patterns mix, shift and divide like a twisting double helix of echoing
electronic tones. Engaging synth melodies saturate each piece; their timbre a
complicated layering of familiar elements fashioned into an artificial yet
somehow recognizable sound. These performances eventually progress through their
brawny phase to gently turn ethereal and otherworldly. Along with being shorter,
the third track "Helicon" (15'47") is also an even further departure from the
known Arc repertoire. Here the throbbing space bass pulse of the previous pieces
has been replaced by a more hypnotic, modern and minimalistic sound. Shreeve and
Boddy hit on all the major aspects of this genre, their melodies are human,
rhythms machine-like, harmonies ethereal and the range of timbres they create to
voice their music original and extraordinary. Arc filters the past into a vital
contemporary landscape without sinking to cliche. Their music is a sincere
exploration of the mood and mystery of the Spacemusic genre.

Out of the mere arrangement of tones Anthony Paul Kirby recording as Nunc Stans
is able to conjure up distinct and evocative Ambient atmospheres. Some of the
ten tracks on his CD THE UNNAMABLE are rendered in darkness, fewer in light,
together bringing the listener to an interesting digital twilight of their own
imagining. This music is the sonic equivalent of clouds crossing a great plain
or mist rising from a dark body of water - in order to perceive and appreciate
these qualities the beholder must match the activity level of their
surroundings. The sounds are wonderful. They rise and recede gently, each in its
own turn. Drones slowly crest as different tones touch in space to create a
distinctive gradually resonating soundfield. Long deep tones roll beneath
tingling high frequencies - and in between the panorama extends towards a hazy
hidden horizon. Thanks to Kirby's personal language of abstraction, these
beautiful soundscapes turn any quiet listening area into an all-encompassing
sonic environment.

Hidden in plain sight Cluster continue their decades long title as the most
beloved and possibly eccentric artists in electronic sound. The duo of
Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius realize music on a path parallel to
that of the mainstream and represent one of music's most enduring conversations
through collaboration. Quietly treasured, their music fulfills the promise of
the synthesizer to create sounds never before heard or imagined. Bypassing
conventional tonal grammar for conflicted harmonies and unanticipated
diversions, Cluster's work is still too playful to be considered Avant-Garde.
Their CD QUA (54'47") is made up of 17 brief tracks. But Cluster really packs
alot into a two-minute piece. Form results from sharp encounters between their
individual tonal spectrums as sounds are used to define mass and volume. Thank
goodness for the rhythm, what with everything else going on in this music it is
something reassuring to hold onto. Listeners are warned not to fall asleep
during this album. That would be too dangerous. Without the conscious mind
available to explain and filter this music QUA may inhabit at an elemental
level. Where does the music come from? What is it saying? It's just Cluster -
who seem like they have always been there. At this point Roedelius and Moebius
must believe that Music is enough for one lifetime, but wondering if one
lifetime is enough for Music?

Cluster and their first studio album in over ten years QUA

In the digital world distortion must be sought after. Having had all their
interesting overloads and circuitry stresses engineered out, the newer digital
instruments seem cold and boring compared to their analogue predecessors. On
AUTUMN PERDUE (52'53"), Beta Two Agonist creates a lovely tension between
glitches, squeaks and weird artifacts (possibly culled from various forms of
overdriven audio) and pristine synthesized tones and pads. Vividly atmospheric
this album rises above the ordinary. Taming distortion into frozen sampled
moments out of time this artist transforms sounds that are usually discarded or
covered up into the prime elements of eight unique compositions. It is tough to
locate this music's obvious beat or pulse as sounds and forms seem to happen
periodically rather than in a discernable rhythm. Yet the music is engaging and
does achieve focus. It is something more than free-form sound collage, as each
track seems to have been composed in a purposeful manner. AUTUMN PERDUE
maintains a unique vaporous mood through the manipulation of timbre, the
essential character of sound. Both minimal and ambient, the listener's mind will
be elsewhere once this CD concludes. Interestingly, the point at which this
music becomes most noticeable is after it has ended.

Small spaces may be filled easily with vivid color. Free System Projekt knows
that vast expanses must be filled by the imagination of the beholder. Their live
recording PROCYON (61'33") begins with the smallest of writhing sounds which
manages to conjure up a limitless cosmos. Entry of a melodic Mellotron flute
solo provides a sense of wandering - and as a phase-shifted synth pad duets with
Mellotron strings the music takes instant and utter possession of the listener.
Out of the building and modulating chords rises a rather commanding sequencer
pattern. Cascading tones bounce through a flow of minor key echoing cycles. With
the live audience trapped inside the tempo of the piece the musical arc extends
across the space just created. This music is about both an appreciation of sound
as well as the relationships between the sounds. The works of Free System
Projekt are something less than musical yet much more than pure free-form
experimentation. By bringing together the idea of reiteration drawn from
minimalism, concepts of sonic exploration from the avant-garde and the tone poem
form of symphonic music they realize an engaging Spacemusic as well as the
arousal of a special emotional resonance within the listener.

Unaccompanied notes seem lonelier, as if they are searching for a companion.
Much of the music on DUST OF TIME (46'02") by Eleni Karaindrou possesses this
quality. It is unimaginably beautiful, full of lamenting string-borne melodies
that slow the heart before breaking it. The musical counterpoint to a motion
picture, DUST OF TIME has a separate life away from the imagery it was designed
to accompany. Scoring for a conventional chamber orchestra, Karaindrou
incorporates concepts from Classical, Minimalism and Ambient Music to realize
works of a pronounced inward quality. The music ranges from an elegant waltz and
lush string movement to slow-moving solos and duets whose recurring themes are
played through a most somber melodic contour. Although this CD soundtrack is an
essential element to the film of the same name, Karaindrou's music conjures up
scenes not related to any real place at all. Its withdrawn beauty and cold
memories maintain a direct connection to the emotions of the listener - and
transition best into silence.

The work of Rhian Sheehan is quite polished, which allows his music's many
colors to shine through. On his CD STANDING IN SILENCE (47'29") the mood of the
tracks shift as if on a whim. Sputtering beats cycle around candy shop chords
then give way to electronic elegy and heroic crescendo - embuing this album with
a lustrous charm. Catchy hip riffs fade into the strains of a tearful string
ensemble while dancing tones glow and recede. Sheehan is able to play his
instruments in a musical way and the results are lovely, beautiful and
evocative. But what enhances these engaging moments are the intermittent
imaginative soundscapes that pull these earthbound sections into an ethereal
realm. STANDING IN SILENCE concludes with a set of Ambient pieces, each
lingering just long enough to leave the listener in a perfumed sonic atmosphere.
Sheehan's music swings a wide arc. From its kinetic sonic reverie to a final
sigh of longing, STANDING IN SILENCE has charms that are hard to resist.

Creating music as Between Interval began as a way for Stefan Strand to take a
break from his more kinetic musical pursuits. THE EDGE OF A FAIRYTALE (62'41")
is his fourth CD of futuristic mindscapes. Realized using a fascinating palette
of synthesized and sampled sounds, this album presents 11 works meant to occupy
the mind of the listener with distinctive and evocative atmospherics. With very
little in the way of melodic narrative the listener may become inattendant -
left to an unconscious structural appreciation of the music. A spare simplicity,
reduction of forms, the repetition of short musical phrases and other concepts
drawn from Minimalism helps THE EDGE OF A FAIRYTALE do more with less.
Mysterious nocturnes fill the air with vaporous drones, resonating metal and
attenuated choirs. As benthal pads saturate the soundfield into atonal
subterranean dissonance, sequencer patterns crank steadily beneath cool effects
and writhing tones. One must admire the mysterious ways in which this music
somehow reaches and reproduces that which is at our inner most being. Quieting
the mind Between Interval provokes us to reflection.

Clear meanings are nowhere to be found on CODE SENT (65'44"). A work that
is equally experimental and accessible the electronica artist Con_Sense
artfully balances trippy rhythms with formal experimentation - all woven
into a dense suite-like construction. This album's unique identity is
forged using pulse patterns, electro-ethno rhythms and an elegant
symmetry. Contrasts in mood and the occasional surprise dropout add to the
electronic euphoria. Stretching and twisting sampled material gives some
sections a granular sound while elsewhere shimmering effects expand over a
muted synthesized thrum. CODE SENT traverses an interesting range of sonic
landscapes. From heart quickening beats to elusive harmonic states the
minimalistic underpinnings of this work convert the listener into a
traveler.

From out of the atmospheric backwaters of the World Music genre flows the
fascinating soundworlds of Forrest Fang. His work combines native flutes,
eastern strings and exotic percussion with synthesizers and digital
processing to produce a music for our world but not entirely of it. His CD
PHANTOMS (70'10") opens up and explores a minimalistic region of music
where expressions are made through the gradual motion of textures and
timbres - all churning beneath cavernous reverberation. PHANTOMS' eight
tracks move between static drones and metallic cross-modulations to the
tumultuous soundscapes of nocturnal ambience - where rhythms seem based
more in ancient ceremonies than in computer software. Exceptional in its
dark hued subtlety this work transports the listener to a cyber-jungle
nowhereland. Alternating between the dreamy and the experimental, the
primitive and the futuristic, this music conjures up an imaginary
environment ruled by mythic lost tribes, technology and the vast continent
of Forrest Fang's dark vision.

The Philadelphia based Spacemusic duo The Ministry of Inside Things exist
outside the confines of the recording studio and in the realm of the live
performance. As MoIT, Art Cohen (guitar) and Chuck van Zyl (synths)
continue a tradition of bringing an otherwise methodical studio based
artform out into the spontaneity of the performance environment. Their
third CD AMBIENT ELSEWHERE feels dark and isolated when compared to their
two earlier releases. While EVERLASTING MOMENT explored the edges,
dynamics and tension of space and atmosphere, and "CONTACT POINT embraced
the more unified themes of cosmic, biospheric and macrocosmic interaction,
AMBIENT ELSEWHERE moves through a strange new territory in-between and
outside of traditional Spacemusic. Drawn from a range of chilling themes,
this album sonifies wintertime, desolate landscapes and the midnight of
the soul. Moving through the timbral badlands of the empty quarter,
Ambient Elsewhere offers up a courageous intimacy. Always bringing their
own influences and innovation to the music process, MoIT produces a sound
that is uniquely individual and personal. The tracks on AMBIENT ELSEWHERE
were drawn from several tour performances and are considered definitive
live versions of classic MoIT pieces like "Love Attack" and "Naylor's
Run". The double album contains two one hour long suites of spacemusic and
easily flows through a variety of themes, energy levels and styles.

Please tune into STAR'S END this weekend for music from The Ministry of
Inside Things and their live CD AMBIENT ELSEWHERE

Johann Johannsson Performs Live in Philadelphia at The Gatherings Concert
Series Saturday 27 June 2009

Icelandic musician, composer, producer and soundtrack artist Johann
Johannsson combines minimalism, ambient and symphonic music to realize
compelling works that gently rise out of silence to endearing sonic
heights. Composing a symphonic music which draws more from the present
than the past, his works incorporate many unusual, possibly ironic,
elements layered in with the familiar sounds and motifs of a classically
outfitted string orchestra. Unfolding in time, the music plays heights off
of depths and lament against affirmation - all blending into one moment.

Along with the warm string section, often compositions feature pipe organ,
children's choir, woodwinds, piano and other unidentifiable drones and
atmospherics. His third CD "IBM 1410 - A User's Manual" (released in 2006
on 4AD) is a peculiar mixture of beautiful stringed harmonies, romantic
building themes, overtly long crescendos and somber resolutions - vaguely
tinged throughout by synthesizer rumblings, electronic drones, sparkling
chimes and manipulations of recorded sound. The result is a comforting,
yet somewhat surreal music. On "Fordlandia" (released in 2008 on 4AD),
Johannsson crafts somewhat more conventional orchestral works, though
nervously twitching computerized beats often guide him.

Neu-Classical composer Johann Johannsson will be making his stateside
concert debut on tour in Spirng 2009 and performs in Philadelphia within
the remarkable setting of St. Mary's Hamilton Village as part of The
Gatherings Concert Series at 8:00pm on Saturday 27 June 2009

Recording under the name Terra Ambient soundscape artist Jeff Kowal brings
together his passion for Ambient and World Music in an impressionistic
synthesis of texture, sound and atmosphere. The CD title WANDERLUST
(51'26") epitomizes his drift between and across genres and disciplines.
Kowal's fascinating musical realm is part digital, part primordial, and
lies amidst his native flutes and tribal drums and the samplers and
synthesizers he manipulates and programs to produce what seems like a lost
continent of sound. The more energetic sections are propelled by
percussion riffs that snake through each piece - stiffening like a spine.
This area of Kowal's music is more about cycles than bars and measures.
There are also many passages of ethereal bliss where reverberant pads move
like slow clouds on the horizon and glowing tones flex and fade off into
the hum of the universe. Composing music that is informed by molecular
whispers in the blood yet still seems searching for a future; the work of
Terra Ambient successfully joins technology and spirituality. WANDERLUST
does more than provide an atmosphere, this music provokes the imagination
and gets to places we did not know were there.

the CD WANDERLUST

Is Electronic Music an Art or a Science? Paul Ellis will tell you that it
is both. While realized using machines his CD THE LAST HIDING PLACE OF
BEAUTY (60'00") is straight out of Ellis' own inner theater - traveling
from his mind to ours. This beautifully constructed work includes bold and
truly innovative ideas. From relentless sequencer phrases that jump
through dramatic key changes and vivid sonic forms rolling to Prog
inspired crescendos, to the dreamy inwardness of an adagio for Mellotron
and synth; THE LAST HIDING PLACE OF BEAUTY lingers on exquisite
instrumental detail without halting the music's momentum. By combining
equal portions of Classical, Ambient and Spacemusic with smart synth and
acoustic instrumental arrangements - Ellis' synthesized orchestra yields
a most listenable art. Knowing that the imaginary lines of genre are only
there to be crossed Paul Ellis demonstrates a sense of ease and adventure
that comes with longevity.

While channeling classic releases by Vangelis and Jonn Serrie, Palancar
has some fresh things to say. On ELYSIUM PLANITIA (60'17") he (a.k.a.
Darrell Wade Burgan) makes an enchanting first impression. At once subtle
and commanding his work is beautifully simple and straightforward. Lyrical
synth melodies sway above sustaining string pads while elsewhere gentle
electro-rhythms softly pump beneath vaporous echo trails and a harmony of
digital "oohs" and "aahs". The energy shifts and drifts between majestic
synthesizer swells and deep rumbling sub-sonic quakes. We listeners hover
blissfully in space one moment only to swoop down for an alien fly-by the
next. This work is exceptional in its dark hued subtlety as well as its
poignant space themes - the grandeur and mystery of the cosmos are both
well represented. Although ELYSIUM PLANITIA is an aural homage to the
planet Mars, this album is better a pipeline into the artist's inner
world. Every track highlights a remarkable facet, without any heaviness
weighing the music down.

By combining minimalism, ambient and symphonic music Jóhann Jóhannsson
realizes compelling works. On the CD FORDLANDIA (67'09"), compositions
gently rise out of silence to endearing sonic heights. Akin to the Adagio
section of a symphony, Jóhannsson's work achieves its forlorn beauty by
lingering on the notes around a chord's fundamental - a unique decoartive
style in which the piece seems to be asking to resolve. Along with the
warm string section, some compositions also feature pipe organ, children's
choir, woodwinds, piano and other unidentifiable drones and atmospherics.
Unfolding in time, the music plays heights off of depths and lament
against affirmation - all blending into one moment. There is no way to
escape the power and desperate beauty of this music. With the harmonic
motion of Angelo Badalamenti, the celestial reach of Joep Franssens and
the pathos of Arvo Pärt, FORDLANDIA is always on the verge of breaking
into poetry.

STAR'S END Update 05.24.09

It is hard to know exactly what the music of Circular (Bjarte Andreassen &
Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik) aligns with. On their CD SUBSTANS (58'40") the duo
offers up in equal parts spacey atmospheres and techno based rhythms to
create an interesting sonic journey for both the body and the mind. Beyond the
tumultuous opening segment the album unfolds with an easy grace. The soft
patter of deep drum rolls extends beneath dense breathing tones. This zone
gives way to digital age beats driven by texture, mood and atmosphere.
Effortlessly shifting gears, SUBSTANS freewheels through chillout music
traditions with an impressive stylistic range. From beat laden thought
experiments to lively sound collage, this work bursts with brightness and
warmth - as it offers a compelling counter-idea to mainstream music.

electronic duo Circular and their new CD SUBSTANS

Whitetree (Ludovico Einaudi and Ronald & Robert Lippok) could easily fit in
amongst all the other Jazz trios in the world, were it not for their special
attention to texture and atmosphere. Their CD CLOUDLAND (46'36") presents ten
perfectly formed tracks of radiant chamber music. The grand piano at the center
of this CD, resoundingly big and beautiful under the hands of Ludovico Einaudi,
easily whispers as well the hushed tones of this work's delicate musical
message. The group really gets going with building percussion riffs and deep
synth basslines charging behind strident piano chords and engaging keyboard
flourishes. While the pulse quickens at the rapidly passing sonic scenery, it is
during the slow parts that the listener experiences the true profundity of music
by Whitetree. Playing off clunking electro-rhythms or dense electronic
modulations the ever-present piano says more than any synthesizer ever could in
its airy, elegant delivery. Informed by artists such as Cluster, the Esbjorn
Svensson Trio and other genre-bending/blending outfits, Einaudi and the Lippoks
bring lyrical lead lines, digital sampling tricks, a lovely classical aesthetic
and resonating piano sound together in a moving target under the cool-jazz, new
age, electronica headings.

Tune in to STAR'S END this weekend for music from trio Whitetree and their new
CD CLOUDLAND

Michael Stichter.

As children of the Cold War era, Soporus are heavily influenced by a lifelong
fascination with the quiet power of nuclear energy - the seemingly miraculous
ability to calmly harness intense reactions coupled with the lingering fear of
potential disaster. Soporus continue with the nuclear power plant themes
established on their debut ep, "Atòmovè Elektràrne", with their full-length
"24,110".

Soporus is scheduled to play a live in-studio radio concert on the 05.10.09
broadcast of STAR'S END. Please tune in for details

The parallel narratives of synthesists Paul Nagle and Peter Ruczynski converge
under the name Ideation. This duo brings to their CD project ADRIFT (58'16") the
knowledge and background of two seasoned electronic musicians enlivened by the
innovation and enthusiasm of a fresh collaboration. The movement of the seven
tracks is always towards affirmation as the music skips, drifts and rolls ever
upward - searching for a future. The patter of sequencer synchronized tones run
in near endless variations beneath sustaining pads, breathy melodies and
chirping effects. The sense is that of being on a pleasant jaunt through deep
space - a journey with no particular destination. The last three tracks play out
in a wonderful suite of sequencer art. By layering the lines of rhythm,
alternating the brightness of the timbres and pacing the introduction of
atmospheric harmonies and ethereal lead lines in interesting ways, Nagle and
Ruczynski create a propulsive work that chugs through the ether in a loose and
carefree manner.

CD ADRIFT

Ethan Rose manufactures loveley Ambient Music on his computer. The CD OAKS
(37'55") is the result of his skill and talent in manipulating the unlikeliest
of instruments into vignettes of tone collage. By truncating his samples,
reversing or looping them, stretching, adding effects and all other manner of
digital rearrangement, Rose realizes wistful music rendered out of sounds played
on an old skating rink pipe organ. Quietly complex, OAKS presents different
moods on its eight tracks - which compare favorably to textural works by Brian
Eno and The Aphex Twin, yet maintain a distinctive profile. Pieces which layer
metallic chiming and rumbling bass beneath a grainy digital glow drift in
contrast to this album's more somber and open atmospheric compositions.
Crystalline timbres ring between plunking sonic droplets in a fascinating
arrangement of pleasant harmonies and counter drifting forms. The subtle
movement, gradual transition and fragile growth found in Rose's work transcends
sleep-inducement and keeps us interested in listening. Although the process
seems very experimental, the resulting music is easy and consonant - and always
delivered as if in intimate, personal contact with the listener.

Most music is all about pairing notes. Electronic Music is all about pairing
sounds. Saul Stokes is an artist who lives in sound. His album METACOLLAGE
(49'40") resides among his more Ambient and textural works. Made up of eight
quietly complex brain churners, the music on this CD sounds as if electricity
were expressing itself as music. Unique tones, ranging from the experimental to
the pastoral, are arranged and combined into a most original music. Chimes ring
under a digital cloud while raw waveforms are gently twisted, filtered and
subdued into fascinating and ever-changing timbres. Jittery beeps slow into
lovely melody as a cyber-lullaby forms amidst dulcet synth tones and echo
feedback. The overall effect remains in the listening background, yet every now
and then a piece does call attention to itself. There is something wondrous
about the way this music is produced. While experimenting with his imagination
Saul Stokes reveals himself in his work.

Jason Sloan's explorations in sound, texture and atmosphere go a bit further on
his cryptically named CD [--] (41'02"). Until his performance at The Gatherings
Concert Series in 2008, Sloan's music was smooth and spacious. It opened up and
filled ambient areas with the slow motion of sustaining chords and a gradual
metamorphosis of timbre. By adding the elements of rhythm and melody, his live
set provided a surprisingly deeper examination of the interior landscape - and
most probably lead to the realization of [--]. The six tracks are more song-like
than previous works. With layers of reverberant e-bow guitar over sampled
percussion loops or cloud-soft synth pads churning alongside digital-age beats,
Sloan's musical ideas posses a shimmering exuberance. Expanding beyond the
uniformity of structure found on his past albums, the energy of the new fuller
arrangements is subdued by dreamy atmospherics. Sparking then smoldering, this
album plays out across an ever-changing landscape - and deserves praise for
aiming so high.

Tune in to STAR'S END this weekend for music from [--] by soundscape artist
Jason Sloan

Jason Sloan - Live at The Gatherings Concert Series 18 April 2009

Jason Sloan is a visual performance/sound/installation artist working out of
Baltimore, MD. His aural work is created with computers, synths, guitar and
environmental sounds extracted from his surroundings and aligns with the
spiritual. He considers his music auditory stimulation, representing a
transcendence of the physical world. This mode of musical expression leaves the
listener to the workings of their own imagination to give meaning to the work.

Jason Sloan is scheduled to perform live at The Gatherings Concert Series in
Philadelphia on Saturday 18 April 2009. For complete details please access:
