On September 30, Botswana celebrated 37 years of independence from
Great Britain. The audience was entertained to some two to three
hours of the usual pomp and ceremony which included military
displays, a fly-past, traditional dancing and singing, the oral
tradition, marimbas among others.
This year, however, there was an extra treat with the appearance of
the Marang Junior Secondary School. Two (2) years ago the students
made a surprise showing with a startling display of moko jumbies
(stilt walkers/dancers) at the national stadium. This time, however,
they went one step further. Apart from the thirty odd moko jumbies
they danced to their own rhythm of the steelband which their fellow
students carried around their necks just for the occasion.
Thanks to their teacher - Hollis Clifton - who brought the
instruments all the way from Trinidad and Tobago, the birth place of
pan - the only musical instrument to have been invented since the
last century.
