New York Steelbands Open Practice Sessions To The Public
Miracle Instrument Dominates Urban Live Music Performance Scene
Rarely can the past, present and future converge to a single point;
however - such is the case in the New York steelband music culture,
experience and history. The steelpan is the only music instrument
invented in this century and it has bridged the generation gap. It
has found a comfortable home in both the young hip-hop and I-pod
generation, and the generation of the past. Indeed, it is not
uncommon to find three generations from the same family together in an
ensemble or orchestra.
On any given day you can find music educators from the world's finest
institutions observing and studying these urban steelpan masters
executing their craft. They are busy creating in broad daylight what
will be future music masterpieces that will become legend, and will
foster debate and conversation for the ages.
Imagine being afforded the opportunity to observe and study the likes
of Michael Jordan, Picasso, Mozart, Beethoven, Thelonious Monk - up
close and personal in their prime - daily - for free.
Every night between now and Labor Day, you witness some of the
greatest musicians of our time performing in the panyards of Brooklyn.
The New York City steelbands are currently preparing for that musical
extravaganza known as Panorama. It is one of the biggest music
spectacles in this hemisphere.
Nightly, hundreds of musicians come together at their respective
outdoor practice areas/panyards located throughout central Brooklyn
neighborhoods (Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Bedford Stuyvesant).
This year thirteen steel orchestras will participate in the NY
panorama competition, with others opting to prepare for the J'Ouvert
celebrations.
In New York, household names like steelpan music arrangers Clive
Bradley, Pelham Goddard, Arddin Herbert, Yohan Popwell, Jit Samaroo
and Robert Greenidge among others, ring like Beethoven, Bach, and
Mozart or Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones and Dr. Dre. of their eras and
respective music genres alike - with as much, if not more stature,
talent and cultural significance. And ironically, like its humble
beginnings the instruments represent the aspirations and voice of a
people not normally seen or heard.
Interpreting and generating hauntingly beautiful, intellectually
stimulating and rhythmically challenging music that tell various
stories, is the norm of the day in these urban steel orchestras.
The mere existence of the NY steelband orchestras and movement defies
logic, time, and environment. In spite of the hostile economics,
environment and social stigmas, the steelbands continue to survive
displaying a brilliance and remarkable resiliency. In spite of all
their supposed business savvy, we dare say that neither Martha Stewart
or Donald Trump could run a steelband in New York - if given the same
resources and social conditions that management of the respective
orchestras have to work with, and constant obstacles they face -
including bad finances; inconsiderate, hostile and contemptuous
authorities, and a non-existent housing environment.
Pan yard - a toxic dump or lot behind God's back that no one wants,
that the pan man will transform into an outdoor urban Carnegie Hall
through vision, imagination, sacrifice and sheer hard work.
Pantonic's 2005 'panyard' before it was transformed. See picture,
above, for the practice space,
as it appears now..
Of course upon this transformation, the lot will now have value and be
taken away from the pan man, by the very people who previously viewed
it with utter disdain. Example: Pantonic Steel Orchestra, for two
seasons in a row, has transformed properties that were complete
eyesores and dumping grounds. In 2004, they did this with the work of
the pan players themselves; and paying for necessary improvements.
The end result was a prime property which they had to give up. It now
generates hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in rent for the
owner. They have just done the same thing again for 2005, and the end
result could be the same.
But - for the days leading up to the panorama competition - the
bonafide, the curious, and the new steelband music fans all find
themselves at the respective New York panyards, most oblivious to what
it took for some of the bands to arrive at that point. Now, the focus
is strictly on the creative process of the art form, resulting in
musical masterpieces emanating from these instruments through the
dexterity of their players and genius of the arrangers and tuners. It
is a once-a-year experience, so don't miss it.
Find the locations of the panyards here.

Brooklyn's Finest Come Together
New York - Their names ring like an All-Star team of some of the most
talented and respected steelpan musicians in North America. In the
steelpan arena they are recognized with single names. An honor that
is reserved for an elite few. Their reserve and humility creates a
mystique about them - that is only matched by their monster talent.
Moreover, their youthful looks and tender ages belie their
accomplishments, resolve and musical knowledge base. And in one of
the most competitive arenas where you are only as good as your last
hit - this crew intends to break new ground and let their music do the
talking.

Exodus Wins World Steelband Festival
Congratulations to Exodus on their 2005 WSMF championship.
Congratulations are in order to Pan Trinbago for having successfully
produced the 2005 World Steelband Music Festival in New York. And a
special congrats to Patrick Arnold for stepping up to the plate and
taking full responsibility for both the good and/or bad.
The show was great and the steelband musicians were simply superb.
They have been without question, and continue to be, ready for prime
time. They (the performing steelbands) are operating on a world stage
with presentations to suit. The professionalism, look, sound,
performance and content - the whole package is there.
Again Pan Trinbago must be complimented for having pulled the show off
with a short runway. Indeed credit is due because had the show not
been successful they (Pan Trinbago) would have shouldered all the
blame exclusively.
Was the show or this adventure perfect? No. Far from it. However,
we are willing to overlook the behind-the-scenes shortcomings that
were at times inadequate, incompetent, unacceptable and intolerable,
which we observed, and those that were communicated to us by
event-participating parties. Let's just say (and hope) that these
were the results of Pan Trinbago being a rookie in a new arena. But
you only get to be a rookie once.
New York has the some of the best musical facilities and institutions
in the world, along with some of the most powerful movers and shakers
in the music business. It is the advertising, media and financial
capital of the world. Many of the world's most powerful and
significant musical organizations have their headquarters located in
New York city. To have not already cultivated an atmosphere and an
opportunity for the participating steelbands, and itself as the world
governing body for the steelpan - to take advantage of priceless
chances, would be a serious shortcoming on Pan Trinbago's part.
In this regard we are confident that Pan Trinbago and the local NY
steelband governing bodies understands that the World Steelband Music
Festival 2005 is far from over. Actually, the real work has just
begun. Millions of dollars in business, advertising and endorsements
deals are to secured over the next few weeks, that are a direct result
of great performances delivered by all the WSMF participants. We are
sure Pan Trinbago will leave an able-bodied team behind in New York,
to bring these opportunities to reality. There was no reason to hold
the show in New York if Pan Trinbago lacks the ability to identify and
exploit the opportunities created by holding a successful steelpan
music event in New York city. Having said that, there is nothing
stopping the individual steelband organizations themselves, from
seizing the moment and negotiating on their own behalf.
Skiffle Bunch 2005 WSMF Runners Up
In the home of business men like Donald Trump, Mike Bloomberg, Russell
Simmons and Sean "P Diddy" Combs, the WSMF panmen have delivered a
product that demands that Pan Trinbago get on a first-name basis with
these financial business moguls and many others.
A special thank you and an acknowledgement to Mrs. Angela Fox of Pan
Trinbago for being the glue that held it all together.

Cool Steel Watch -- Steelpan Music Rocking The Internet
This week's edition of the Cool Steel steelpan music program on
PanRadio opened up with a special exclusive internet "sneak preview"
from Pantonic Steel Orchestra's upcoming CD/DVD treat for 2005. The
New York powerhouse, featuring the musical vision of their captain
and accomplished arranger, Keith Roberts, showcased his interpretation
and Pantonic's talents with Shania Twain's hit "Still The One." This
project is a follow- up collaboration with Basement Recordings, to the
steel orchestra's world famous Pantonic Live! The CD. Cool Steel is
picking this one as a "sure shot" monster hit!
Desperadoes, playing John Legend's "Ordinary People" as arranged by
the master Clive Bradley for the Pan In The 21st Century 2005
competition, continues to be the runaway smash hit and top-requested
pan tune for the past six weeks. It's become an "I-Pod" favorite!
Looks like this is going to be one of the major contenders for the
2005 steelpan music single of the year. Not far behind, mind you, is
the second most requested pan single also in the past six weeks -
Phase 2 Pan Groove's roaring renditon of Boogsie Sharpe's outstanding
arrangement of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."

the steelpan will be on exhibition and for sale by private auction.
This collection was exhibited during last year's carnival (2004) at
The National Museum and Art Gallery in Trinidad and Tobago for six

internally migrated to Toco where he completed his primary education
at Cumana Toco Seven-Day Adventist Primary School. At this primary
school he was taught art and because of the talent shown he was
selected by the then principal of the school to do a special workshop

Jazz Back In Harlem - A Steelpan Affair - Video
The Garvin Blake Quintet at the Uptown Renaissance Restaurant
In Review
Harlem, New York -
In the stomping grounds of where just one name of the jazz greats are
needed - i.e. Bird, Max, Miles, Coltrane, Dizzy, Basie and Duke among
others - Garvin Blake and his quintet brought us back to an era when
jazz and blues reigned supreme uptown, in Harlem. The group is also
known as the Garvin Blake Ensemble, and Garvin Blake and Friends. The
much-anticipated gig has been the buzz of the town the last few days
as NYC jazz fans scurried to get advance tickets to the show.
Sunday's Pan Jazz event at the restaurant was completely sold-out.
The Uptown crowd at the Renaissance Restaurant was not disappointed.
Garvin Blake and his complement of stellar musicians (Frankie
McIntosh, Damon Duewhite, Calvin Jones and Tony Cedras) in their own
right, moved with the spirit of the great ones as they treated the
audience to a jazz music performance that was befitting of the
historical musical significance of hallowed Harlem ground they were
on... This capacity crowd was treated to a special moment.

Pan Jazz Moves to Uptown
Garvin Blake and Friends to perform
at the Uptown Renaissance Restaurant
New York - Pan Jazz is moving uptown, literally, to the Uptown
Renaissance Restaurant in Harlem on Sunday May 1. Making the move for
the day, or rather the evening, are Garvin Blake and Friends who
received critical acclaim at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall on
Father's Day last year and wowed the audience with their performance.
Uptown Renaissance restaurant opened its doors a little over a year
ago on April 9, 2004. The establishment astutely recognized the
importance of their community, and therefore remained sensitive to its
needs. Subsequently the Callistes have opted to carry on in the
tradition of the preceding establishment, and ensure that clientele
from their surrounding community continue to feel welcome, while
simultaneously catering to consumers from all areas.

The Master Does It Again...
Desperadoes Take Pan In The 21st Century
Trinidad - Last night Desperadoes Steel Orchestra won the Pan In The
21st Century competition with their rendition of John Legend's
Ordinary People arranged by master musician Clive Bradley. It was just
one of those performances. The audience seemed to know within the
first 30 seconds that it was going to be special. When it was over the
audience erupted with applause and a partial standing ovation. They
knew indeed that it was one of those memorable, very special
performances and Clive Bradley and Desperadoes had done it again -
with a classic performance and arrangement that will be talked about
for the ages. The love-hate romance that has endured for over 30 years
has again reproduced a gem. Desperadoes beat into second place, this
year's 2005 panorama champion Phase II Pan Groove, who did a version
of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean arranged by the great Len "Boogsie"
Sharpe.
In an exclusive follow-up, Bradley told When Steel Talks that "In all
my experience, I was never called upon to do that type of work,
changing tempos and stuff. The selection (the version I worked from)
was made for that type of thing.

When Steel Talks - Special - Post-Panorama 2005
"IN PHASE" at last...
How Phase II got its Groove back... 2005 Panorama Champions
They sat and listened to the words of pan guru and leader of Phase II
Pan Groove, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe. It was after two in the early hours
of a February 5 Saturday morning, with the crucial Panorama finals at
the Queen's Park Savannah just hours away.
As Boogsie spoke, the mood of some was sombre as their leader reminded
them that the championship title was theirs for the taking, but also
for the losing.
Undoubtedly with this in mind, Boogsie brought home the reality to his
faithful musicians. He pleaded with the supporters present to please
leave the stage immediately after assisting them on, and to wait in
the wings to help them off after their performance. After hours of
practice, he reminded players of the need to be focused and not to
indulge in too much merrymaking before the 120-member steel
orchestra's performance that night. Ray Holman, his colleague and
friend of many years, was still damp from his work of drilling the
band to perfection during the just-concluded rehearsals. He had
worked alongside Boogsie this year, and he too, briefly counseled the
gathering. Full Story

Controversy >> Panorama 2005 -
Old School vs. New
Pan Progress or Pan Regression??
This year Steelbands participating in Trinidad and Tobago's 2005
steelband music panorama competition/concert haven been permitted to
use songs from previous years as their performance selections. The
only restriction is that no band may use a song that they played in
prior panorama competitions. This rule change has invoked spirited
debate among the involved parties... Below are links to When Steel
Talks' Exclusive Interviews with some of the most respected, powerful
and news-making individuals in the steelpan music industry. Listen to
their perspective on this question. When Steel Talks continues our
coverage of the 2005 TnT steelpan music panorama season...

Patrick Arnold,
President of Pan Trinbago
- on the 2005 T&T Panorama Season
Trinidad - Patrick Arnold, president of Pan Trinbago, had his
customary update for the global pan community via When Steel Talks
when he chatted and shared his thoughts on the upcoming competitions
for the 2005 Panorama season in Trinidad and Tobago. Noting that the
season was short, he spoke about the new rule which allowed bands to
choose a selection from previous years, once it was not part of their
own past panorama repertoire. Arnold noted that quite a number of
bands have opted to go with "classical calypsos" from previous years.
He believed that this would work in favor of the bands and the
competition, as pan lovers would be more familiar with the music. The
songs normally written for pan suffered from lack of airplay,
according to Arnold, and as a result, were not always well known.

Japan - PANPLE plays an active part as a steelband in Kansai Region,
Japan. In the beginning, our band had only a few members. We were so
moved by Caribbean Magic when they came to Japan. We had no sponsor,
no funds, and not enough musical instruments for our band. But we
always had our dreams and goals. We played anywhere to buy
instruments with our performance income. We are still a small band,
but we have grown big enough to play at the Japanese Pan Festival.

Billy Cobham And Culturemix at the Jazz Iridium in New York
Why Billy Cobham's Culturemix has been part of the New York Iridium
Jazz Club's tenth-anniversary celebration is clear. Like Iridium,
Cobham continues to blaze an awesome musical trail that ranges from
jazz to funk to R&B to rock and anything else that you can move to.
With two previous appearances at the club, it was like another "coming
home" session to claim his crown once again. The diversity of the
Culturemix combination is analogous to Iridium's own changing and
staying in step with the times.

There are few positions if any in the music world that are as
challenging, rewarding, difficult and demanding as that of a
steelband drummer. Indeed, the ultimate is the title "panorama
drummer" of a world-class steel band with 100-plus players. The
position requires not only a monstrous skill set and physical
stamina, but a radical departure in thinking, and understanding of
the role of a drummer operating at this very high musical level.
Indeed, the fortune of some 100-plus other musicians [and in some
cases a village or country] is directly interfaced with the ability
and composure of the drummer. One mistake on his part can result in
a catastrophic derailing of the locomotive and subsequent tragic
runaway crash-landing of an otherwise classic performance that will
become the substance of folk lore and history (documented in both
song and the books).
For this final quarter of the year we focus on the hardest working
man in the band; the steelband drummer. Just ask Max Roach or Ralph
McDonald. This mystical and revered position has attracted the
attention of some of the greatest drummers and percussionists on the
planet. While many young people dreamt of being like Michael
Jordan, simultaneously countless others worldwide dreamt with equal
passion, of one day holding the position of steelband drummer. We
salute the great steelband drummers past and present.

into an unmatched skill set.

world. At this point in his life and in spite of his youth, Mr. Pegus
commands considerable respect from his peers, but remains extremely
humble.

New York:
See panorama through pictures as our ace pan-photographers display a
photo documentary of the events of New York's panorama 2004.
The images capture the ritualistic essence, celebration and ecstasy
that is summoned through the vibrations of the drums and the people.

J'Ouvert 2004 was easily one of the best moments for the pan
fraternity as New York panmen and pan women dominated the scene. The
music was solely steelpan music, and the hundreds of thousands of
J'Ouvert revellers stretched as far back as the eye could see.
Indeed the iron and steel musicians reigned supreme.

Vandalized to Destruction:
Vandal destroys Utopia Pan Soul: The Next Generation's instruments.
Literally hours before Brooklyn steel orchestra Utopia Pan Soul: The
Next Generation was to perform at a major Rhode Island function, a
disgruntled care-taker "took" an ax to all the band's instruments, and
destroyed over fifteen drums which included background, front line and
bass pans.
A greatly-reduced but still spectacular-sounding Utopia Pan Soul: The
Next Generation, fulfilled their obligations and thrilled patrons at
the "SOUND SESSION '04", an international music festival sponsored by
the Providence Black Repertory Company and the City of Providence
Department of Art, Culture & Tourism. The band played on Saturday
July 24 in Providence, Rhode Island.
To replace the instruments would cost at least fifty thousand dollars,
which is totally outside the band's financial capabilities. Members of
the organization called the wanton destruction an extreme setback,
especially around this time of year when the orchestra is quite active.

A Class Act:
Steelpan and Alice Tully Hall
New York - June
The almost sold-out, 1,096-seat Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center was
host to an innovative musical showpiece entitled An Acoustic
Revolution: A Steel Pan Jazz concert. Premiere artists from the
global pan community commanded attention for three hours on the Sunday
evening affair, featuring the likes of the ADLIB Youth Symphony, who
filled the hall with jazz-influenced standards interpreted in steel.
The fifteen-member orchestra moved expertly through a musical vista of
pan works as the opening act. Andy Narell, who is a proven staple in
the pan world, took the stage with his band directly after and
delivered an infectious session to which the near-capacity audience
responded favorably.
There were two awards given out during the evening - a Visionary award
to living legend drummer Max Roach - Buddy Williams accepted on his
behalf, and a Lifetime Achievement award to improvisational pan jazz
solo great Emmanuel Riley, a pioneer and legend in the steelpan world.
New York-based 98.7 Kiss FM's Lenny Green hosted the pan jazz
concert, which was sponsored in part by WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM and WWRL1600
AM.
After the short intermission New York's own star pannist Garvin Blake
was center stage, accompanied by his band which comprised accomplished
musicians in their own right - including ace arranger and
world-renowned keyboardist Frankie McIntosh and the respected and
multi-talented Tony Cedras on guitar and accordion. Blake decided on
a traditionally-tinged repertoire which struck the right chords with
the audience who sang right along; in fact Blake and company received
a standing ovation. US-based academic and pannist Liam Teague was the
final pan artist for the evening and gave the crowd a combination of
sax and steel, with Arturo Tappin on the former. Veteran great Buddy
Williams on drums and Gary Haase on bass were part of Teague's
complement.
From comments during and after the show - that overall, people were
quite pleased - would be an understatement! With no conflicts of
impact, the event went off with the professional deftness expected
from one held at such a venue. What appeared to be sometimes rather
abrupt endings unexpected by most of the artists themselves, upon
investigation turned out to be their own penchant for understandably
enjoying their on-stage presentations, to the extent that they
over-ran the strict time limitations communicated to them prior to the
event.
Of special note were the sound reinforcement arrangements, as, with
the exception of the ADLIB Steel Symphony who took full advantage of
Alice Tully's natural sonic beauty - the acts were all superbly miked
with the emphasis on complimenting the performances rather than
amplification - no small feat in a hall specially constructed
primarily for natural acoustics.
The entire package, as produced under the aegis of Abstract
Entertainment, Inc. headed by businessman Ralph k. Ramsey, is just one
of the catalog of works for the company. Based on the acclaim and
positive feedback, Ramsey is looking forward to next year's monster
production. The 2005 initiative of the Steel pan jazz show is already
on the drawing board, with talks on-going with artists who are hoping
to be part of that box office draw line-up. Go to

information on the event.
Something different this way comes. Pan Jazz at Lincoln Center.
For those for whom a steel drum conjures up images of a cruise ship
or a Caribbean vacation, a pleasant surprise awaits in the form of a
Father's Day show at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. The
instrument's humble origins notwithstanding, pan has played many
genres of music, if not as many venues. The show on June 20th, 2004
marks the debut of the Pan Jazz format at Lincoln Center.
While hard core aficionados have already been exposed to classical
music and jazz music as played on a double seconds or a tenor pan,
new initiates to the pan instrument will be treated to the talents
of the ADLIB Steel Orchestra, Garvin Blake, Andy Narell, Arturo
Tappin and Liam Teague.
There will also be two phenomenal music legends in the spotlight at
the Steel Pan Jazz concert. Emmanuel 'Jack' Riley and Max Roach will
both be honored. Riley is one of the first great improvisational pan
players and soloists who impacted a generation, and he was also a
Pan tuner in the early years for Desperadoes and Invaders Steel
Orchestras in Trinidad. Max Roach, the greatest drummer who ever
lived, is one of the early people to recognize the importance of
pan , and to incorporate the instrument into his group, M'Boom.
The presence of ADLIB Steel Orchestra will allow newcomers to the
genre to view a band with all the accoutrements. This band, formed
in 1996 comprises youths who apply their musical talents to the
instrument of their heritage. Part of the band's repertoire is
featured on a CD called 'ADLIB Live' recorded in 2002 and ranges
from jazz, to calypso and classical.
Garvin Blake's recording of "Belle Eau Road Blues" is a showcase for
this talented soloist. Fusing jazz, African and Caribbean rhythms,
Blake pays homage to jazz great Thelonius Monk as well as
calypsonians the Mighty Sparrow and the late Lord Kitchener. The
smooth inflections of the double seconds instrument, as mastered by
Blake demonstrate a skill that many pannists attempt, but few
achieve.
Andy Narell, whose pan recording The Passage was released in late
March, has toured the world with his pan instrument. Narell's
dedication to the rhythms of Africa and the Caribbean demonstrates
just how music transcends race. Narell experiments successfully with
the music of Guadeloupe, Martinique and South Africa in addition to
the melodies of Trinidad and Tobago.
The talents of Arturo Tappin have been heralded worldwide. The Bajan
saxophonist has appeared on stage with the likes of Roberta Flack,
Anita Baker, and Luther Vandross. Those who try to categorize such
things have come up with the term reggae- jazz- fusion, but the
listeners should judge for themselves whether or not there is even a
name for these sweet sounds.
Liam Teague, having achieved notable distinction as a pan soloist
has been touring the world with his "hands like lightening". Hailed
as a pan virtuoso, Teague also brings pan to the academic world,
serving as Research Scholar and Assistant Director of the Northern
Illinois University Steelband.
Abstract Entertainment Inc. and associates WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM, Smooth
Jazz CD 101.9 FM, 98.7 KISS FM, and Anheuser to name a few promise
to bring a great show. Bring your father…and your mother too.
