Subject: Re: SW thread: Finally decided - ordered from Fretsong
Thanks James/Chris. I had reahearsal yesterday and tried to focus on those
details. I realized yesterday that I do use the inlays for positioning. I
don´t know how much I rely on them but enough for it to be a concern, I wil keep
some type of inlays, dots, blocks or sharkfins, probably sharkfins since for the
last 20 years I have played mostly Jacksons.
As to the material, I am not too knowledgeable. I believe that the Jackson
inlays are MOP, but I don´t know much else. I have not been able to figure out
what the Synapse inlays/dots are made of, or the practical difference between
abalone and MOP.
On another topic, I have concluded that I never use the tone knob/potentiometer,
so my new baby will not have a tone knob. Mine will go to 11 like Spinal Tap
once said. As to the finish, this is what I chose (candy red), but transparent
like the blue one below:
I want to thank everyone for their support and help so far. I am pretty sure
I´ll be back with some questions. I´ll keep everyone posted on the progress.

You can also get the neck with the micro dots on the fingerboard, I also got one
with standard size dots in MOP, but it is hard to see the difference from what
ever the standard material is...abalone might stand out more, but I always liked
the idea of having the dots on the top back, like some classical guitars
(actually some classicals have none whatsoever, those are for real men I guess
just to know where they are on the fingerboard by feel or visually)

I chose the walnut with a "oil" finish and I am happy I did.
Seems more durable and more repairable than paint.
Also, it sounds more natural which is a good compliment to graphite.
I went with abalone dots which was a nice accent and wrapped up the natural look
of my instrument well.
This is all more or less person preference and I am sure that whatever Paul does
you will be happy with.
Everyone that has seen my guitar in person has literlay dropped their jaw
followed by a "oh my god"; and the last time I showed someone a few people came
over to look at it that were amazed including a cabinet maker who asked "where
did he get that quality of wood in that size"
I am excited that you went with Paul; you will be so happy!!!!

Subject: SW thread: Finally decided - ordered from Fretsong
Ok, finally after some weeks of major indecision I made a decision yesterday and
ordered a custom made guitar from Paul at Fretsong. Thanks Jon Bondy and
everyone else here for their patience in answering my questions.
I have a very good idea as to what I want after a few days of back and forth
e-mails with Paul. Here is what is left.
1) Finish. I am still not sure what kind of finish I want and am limited by the
size of an L shaped type guitar. Striped, solid, metallic? Classic SB black or
white? Other than what I think looks good, are there any other consideration
like cracks, durability, maintenance, etc.?
2) Neck. I am pretty much decided on a Moses graphite neck with no inlays and
side dots. I considered fiber optics but decided against it. Some type of
fluorescent or glow in the dark type side dots would be great, is there such a
thing? Is it recommended?
3) Strap hook. There is a bass strap hook available, but it seems big for a
guitar. Is there a guitar strap hook available for a guitar? Or simply go with a
strap button.
Everything else is pretty much covered with Paul.
Thanks again everyone.

Sure hope it's a natural finish. Otherwise you could see cracking and chipping
if the wood doesn't have room to expand/contract.
