The SA has the S trem and the TA has the Trans Trem.  Other than that, they're the same.

Hi everyone! I'm looking for information about comparing Steinberger
Jam-Tremolo and Floyd Rose. I'm going to buy a new guitar next month
and I don't know what to take: Steinberger GSX (or GS) with Jam-Trem
or Hamer Chaparral with Floyd. I love Steinberger graphite blend
headstock neck, but I'm not sure if Jam-tremolo is better than Floyd
Rose. There is no locking nut on GSX (and GS), so I'm not sure that
Steinberger will stay in tune while working with tremolo.

Did anyone compare these two bridges JT and Floyd? What do you think?

thanks!

The silence on this one has been deafening so I'll try to help.

Think of the JamTrem as kind of a super R-Trem. Like the Floyd and
the R it's a knife edge design. It's been a while since I talked to
Ned about it but he seemed to really be fond of the design,
specifically the stability during use and the ability to lock the
trem.

I've never seen a JamTrem in person, and it was introduced when the
line was fading from popularity. I don't think I've even seen good
up close pictures even. Only a few hundred JamTrems were made, and
supposedly many were shipped to Japan & Australia. The Aussies
wanted it because a native shredder by the name of Brett Garsed was a
prominent player of GS's at the time. The Japanese just snapped up
anything with a Steinberger logo.

Unless you can play both of them in person and tell which one would
work better for you, any third party recommendation is pretty useless.
I can say the GS is probably a bit more uncommon and a higher end
guitar, and therefore probably more expensive. But it's also more
likely to hold it's value should you decide to part with it. That's
assuming you'd pay fair market value for it now.

Hi out there!  I was thinking that the GS had TTs along with wasn't it called a Z-Trem?  Isn't the Jam-Trem the substandard one that nobody really cared for that we were talking about a couple of years ago?  I asked a question about anyone's experience with the Z-Trem back then and got zero replies.  Speaking of fair market value, my GS7T is in definite collector condition and surely one of the finest examples still in existence(the blue metallic one shown on the website), and I wonder what it's worth if I decided to sell it.  I call it my NASA guitar, cause it to me feels like a guitar NASA would build if they did ever build one.  I'm thinking of getting another old street rod show truck that's nearly completed and nearly show ready, and that takes considerable money, so that's the only way I'd consider parting with it is if I could get that all figured out.  Anyone have an idea on it's value?  Also, here goes again......Anyone have any experience with the Z-Trem?  Take care cyber 'Berger
buds!  Benny

I'm selling a black GL4T, serial number 6258, made sometime in Dec

And is the tremolo pictured on
http://www.steinbergerworld.com/Gbridges.htm#Z-Trem really a Z-trem?
Compare with the Jam-trem prototype pictured on
http://www.nedsteinberger.com/prototype/gs.html --they look
identical to me. Then there's another(?) design pictured here:
http://www.musicyo.com/planet/jam_trem.pdf --is that the true Jam
trem?

When searching for steinbergers on ebay I often find Gibson SGs,
Flying Vs and MIIIs equipped with Steinberger tremolos. Can't find
one right now, but IIRC they have a lever on top of the guitar
behind the trem, not a small knob as on the trem pictured in MYs PDF
file. Or are they broken Jam trems that lost their knobs?

The GS's can be found w/ TT's, Z-Trems and JamTrems. The Z-Trem was
an earlier creation and is a very basic knife edge design which also
includes a knife edge nut. I think Ned took some of the complaints
about the Z-Trem to heart and came up with the JamTrem.

I think they may have some JamTrems still at the factory. Will try
to get some pics when I'm down there.

Those are probably KB Trems pictured here:

http://www.steinbergerworld.com/parts/kbtrem.jpg

I always get questions about these. It was designed by Ned, but they
were never used on Steinberger branded insruments. They show up on
Korean made instruments from the late 80's & early 90's. They were
never sold as parts, and haven't been made in over a decade. The two
most common questiosn I get are "what is it?" and "where I can get
parts?". However the KB is not a very good trem. Even Ned so much
as admitted as much to me. So I tell them to just replace it with
something else more readily available and of higher quality.

Yep, that's the one I was thinking of.

So is the KB trem the only bad one, or is the Jam trem of poor
quality too?

Oh WOW!  Maybe it is all coming back together with all of you guy's help.  If this is the JamTrem (see link below), I do know of it.  My one buddy bought a MY Kramer Berretta with this bridge on it way back shortly after they first came out at MY.  I can definitely vouch for this one being a hunka hunka burnin' dung.  The principle of operation IS good, but it falls WAY short of accomplishing it, will not stay adjusted, and is a complete and major pieca.  By far the absolute worst thing I've personally ever seen with the Steinberger name on it, and undeserving of it.  I ended up very embarrassed, because being the Berger boy I thought it would have to be pretty danged good being Steinberger licensed, so I recommended it to him.  He still has it, hates it, and just uses it as a stop tailpiece in the locked position, because it's just SO horrible.  It can be only one thing here-Time lapses, and with that so can memories, and that's had to be what's happened to my friend Andy getting mixed up cause nobody could recommend the JamTrem if it's this one.  That's unless there was another version other than the one MY used for that short period.

On the other hand, when I seen Boston on tour last summer, Gary Pihl (sp)(Sammy Hagar first solo era) played nothing but 2 black GS's for the entire show.  Both had what looked to be the Z-Trem.  That's why I was so curious about them at the time,  because those sure must not be too bad if he uses them.  Maybe he just wasn't interested in the TT, or preferred the Z-Trem feel?  Who knows?  I'm sure he can afford the TT version of the GS if that is his guitar of choice.  Myself, I still think nothing even comes close to coming close to a TransTrem, other than the S-Trem.  With the best of intentions to all,  Benny

Sorry, but I can't take guests with me. Steinberger & MusicYo are in
the Epiphone factory & office. There's millions of dollars of
guitars and parts everywhere. Because of this security is tight, and
they wouldn't look to kindly on throwing the doors open to whomever
wants to look around. Understand the interest, but their invitation
to visit is limited to me. I will be taking more piics this year for
those curious. Hope to get down to the Yo warehouse this time.

Truth be told, on the whole the Epiphone tour isn't much either.
Aside from the corner where they actually assemble the USA stuff for
Kramer, Steinberger & the Epiphone Heritage guitar, everything else
is a box operation. They're taking stuff coming in from Asia,
unpacking it and checking it, then re-packing it for Yo or dealer
delivery. So it's not like you see lots of stuff int he process of
being made. It is impressive in it's size - it's a large two story
warehouse crammed full of instruments. But the tour would be over in
10 minutes, since most of it is already in boxes. The Gibson Custom
Shop down the road would be a whole 'nother story though. . .

I also got to see the "most attractive feature" last time down when I
went through the old parts. They were in what they term "the shed".
It was like 85-90 degrees that day, easily over 100 in there. I
guess I'm a glutton for punishment when it comes to this stuff. The
guys were nice enough to check on me from time to time to make sure I
hadn't died out there ;-) It was a gas seeing all the old parts and
figuring out what was what though.

I wouldn't worry too much. Ebay is a funny place when it comes to
deciding the value of an instrument. Sometimes nobody is looking to
buy something that there's alot of, so if the seller didn't open the
auction high or use a reserve it's gonna go cheap. I paid less for my
GM4T from Pedalman than this one sold for.

I saw this KB-Tremolo on Epiphone which had a strat body and a
locking nut. I didn't really understand how it worked with
locking/unlocking it, to me it looked like it was locked in any
position of locking lever.

Ned says the JamTrem used on the Kramers is the same one used on the
GS. However he added that installation was a bit tricky. Since they
didn't consult him when they produced those it's possible/probable it
wasn't done right. That could account for some to much of the
lackluster performance and poor reviews of them on the Kramers.

Maybe the trem in Ned's picture is not typical because it's a
prototype, or maybe someone made a typo somewhere.

There is one on ebay currently that looks good without a folding leg

The Ibanez bodies are far narrower and obviously a bit more angular.
Never played one, but thought those and the Yamaha BX-1 basses were
two of the "also rans" during the headless craze that seemed to "get
it". Many to most of the copycats were atrocities. Then again it
was the 80's so that could be said of many guitars from that time.

Allright, it looks like Jam-Trem is not the best way to spend money..
But I still want a Steinberger. Now I'm thinking about GR, what can
you say about R-Tremolo? Is it better than a Floyd? I'v searched
archive and found some bad reports about it, I'm wondering if it is
possible to install all types of strings or just the double ball
ones? Can I use 10-52 strings with that tremolo?

Thanks alot!
