While Bush and Cheney continue to pretend they didn't lie their way into a war, you'll have a chance to sing the truth come Sunday. Myself and Lisa Rogers will be hosting the fourth round of the Austin Peace Open Mike, at Ventana del Soul. We welcome anyone with something to perform: musicians, poets, puppeteers, you name it. If you have something to get off your chest, come join us. If you just want to get inspired and know that you're not alone, come join us.
Watch this space for the debut of my election-year CD, "Bushwhacked," due out within a few weeks.
The following Sunday, June 27 I'll be doing a different kind of performance. I'll be preaching at the Wildflower Unitarian Church (which I've been attending the past couple of years). The topic: the gospel of songwriting. Here's the blurb from the Wildflower web page (www.wildflowerchurch.org):
"For the Sake of the Song - Songwriting as a Spiritual Path." Where do songs come from? That's a question every songwriter gets asked. Austin troubadour Steve Brooks speaks and sings about the parallels among songwriting, prayer and meditation, as well as the hidden links between Sophocles and Merle Haggard.
Wildflower Church meets at the South Austin Senior Activities Center. Info below.
