Fox, Hound and Folk Alliance - the Big Show comes to Austin   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #204 of 326 |
This is the big weekend, friends! If you're into folk music, you're about to catch one of the greatest free shows on earth. Folk Alliance is South by Southwest without the lines and Kerrville without the heat. Like SXSW, folksingers from around North America will descend upon Austin to showcase for club owners, booking agents and record labels. A lot of the showcases are free, starting with the Austin Conspiracy on Thursday night. We get things rolling with a special conference kickoff show at The Hideout at 6th and Congress (Howdy, Leslie!). Then we'll move to the Hilton Hotel, next to the Convention Center, for four fabulous days and nights of showcasing in a hotel room. You can hop from room to room the same way you'd hop from club to club on Sixth Street. Stick your head in. If you like what you hear, stick around. If you don't like it, move on to the next room.
GUIDE TO FOLK ALLIANCE: Here's the important thing to know: Official Folk Alliance showcases, titled "Performance Alley," are open only to people with badges - people registered for the conference. Same goes for Folk Alliance workshops, banquets, etc. But just like SXSW, there will be a sumptuous banquet of unofficial showcases going on, on designated music floors at the Hilton. The unofficial showcases are open to the general public. And if you clap real loud, you may be helping a new favorite artist impress a club owner and get a gig. You'll find flyers all over the hotel lobbies, letting you know who's playing where - at any given time, there may be music going on in 30 different rooms. I'll be playing a lot in the Austin Conspiracy room, as well as several other showcase rooms. Once I know the room numbers, I'll send y'all a list.
In the midst of all the madness, I'll be hopping over to the Fox & Hound to play my regular Friday Happy Hour. Sometime Tuesday, I'll send out for margaritas and collapse.
