If you're not worn out from ACL Fest, or you just can't afford the tickets, I'll have two unique events going on this Sunday. Sunday morning, I'll be giving a provocative sermon and song at the Wildflower Unitarian Church on Manchaca Road. The title is "J.C. and Me." In a nutshell: "I take a non-Christian look at the story of Christ. I suggest that if we look at the Gospels with fresh eyes - as mythology instead of history - we find a powerful tale about our inborn divinity, the meaning of suffering and the healing power of love. It culminates in a parable about spiritual death and rebirth, and the many layers of meaning that are wrapped up in a simple symbol: the Cross."
Sunday evening, I'll be at Jovita's, joining forces with Paula Held and Seymour Guenther, a.k.a. the Purgatory Road Playboys, for "Not Without a Fight," a fundraiser for local Democratic candidates in the fall elections. We'll provide the "fun" part of the fundraiser. We'll open the evening, then play a few songs between speeches, roasting folks like Tom, Dick and Rick, as well as the Mumbler-in-Chief. It's running from 6 to 10:30, so if you're proud to use the L-word, you can drop in any time. After that, I'm off to Minnesota for a couple of weeks. Details below.
