I had one of those musical moments last weekend that strike as suddenly as a summer thunderstorm...well, maybe not the right simile for this month...but you get the idea. I was playing on the porch of an old barn out at Pioneer Farms, a living museum of a prairie homestead, and everyone was dressed in pioneer garb. A young lady requested "The Bluebonnet Waltz," a song of mine set at an old Texas barndance. Within a few beats, she and her boyfriend were up waltzing to it. I watched as my song came to life, like bluebonnets, for a few minutes that were brief but unforgettable.
This Saturday, I'll be on a different front porch, up at B.B. Rover's with my vato Danny Santos. We'll be swapping songs in preparation for an upcoming European tour. Danny & I share a deep love of Texas troubadours, so besides our own songs, you're likely to hear a lot of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and Billy Joe Shaver. If you miss us at BB's, you catch us the following weekend downtown, at the Austin Farmer's Market.
And it's not too soon to alert you that Paula & I will be stoking the dance-floor at Snuffy's next Friday, with her band The Broken Artz cranking out the two-steps. Seymour Guenther will slap around the doghouse bass and Steve "Thunder" Hopkins will take out his aggressions on the drums.
