This morning's sad news brings back a memory of the night I played for Lady Bird Johnson. Ever since I wrote "The Bluebonnet Waltz," back in '92, I had harbored a fantasy of one day meeting Lady Bird and singing her the song. I finally got my chance in the waning hours of 2003. As you might guess, it was at Liz Carpenter's house on the hill. I also got to thank her for the lavish displays of wildflowers that fill my yard each spring and grace my many miles on Texas highways. The memory's bittersweet. Since her stroke, she wasn't able to respond with more than a nod and a smile. But watching her and Liz sitting together, two legendary ladies who had shared fifty years in a bond as deep as marriage, spoke more than words could have done. A few minutes later, it was champagne and fireworks. Ben Sargent's cartoon in this morning's paper got it just right. Are there bluebonnets in heaven? There will be, now.
I'll be hitting those Texas highways this weekend, tonight up in Taylor and tomorrow morning at the downtown Farmer's Market. See you on the road. No charge for wildflowers.
