Ah, thank you both for explaining that :) I was pretty sure you didn't mean Nippon Electric Corporation - lol.
It was probably all right for the metal heads and groups but yeah, from the sounds of it, the more intimate 'theatre' type venues are preferable for someone like the Nephs.
Thanks to you, too Kaos Crow for your review!

Well, isn't the NEC a creation of Satan himself? I thought it was very apt that the festival was called Hellfire! It was a most strange place to have seen FOTN perform. I don't think you could have found a less atmospheric, sterile or characterless location if you tried. A place absorbs atmosphere and emotion so a dedicated music venue is always going to provide a better experience but that warehouse/hanger has probably seen more dog shows, cake and craft shows and collectors markets than music events.
Anyway, venue aside I thought the gig was ok but not amazing in comparison to the 24th Moment at Astoria and the Ad Mortum/ Ad Vitam gigs last year. Carl was good, if a little grumpy seeming at first, and as people have commented previously more 'interactive' and the band seemed pretty together to me. A good set list, with lots of Zoon for the metally audience but way too short especially after a slightly late start. Definite highlight was
"Last Exit..." where the whole thing really came together for me.
On a magickal level... Well, I was knocked a little off kilter by 'My Dying Bride' (who were brilliantly doomy and really brought out the dark in the metalhead crowd to a very palpable level), a bit of a 'shields up' moment really, but I didn't pick up much going on magickally with FOTN. It just seemed like a gig to me. That is not to diss it it any way. I thoroughly enjoyed it despite some fairly grumpy metalheads near the front who seemed to object to being jiggled and jostled about a bit. Why go to the front if you don't want to experience that? I don't know... Saying that, there was definitely something going on during Psychonaut, but very personal to Carl methinks. As mentioned before "Last Exit..." really brought everyone together and certainly raised a lot of energy but I didn't notice where it went, if anywhere!
Also, when I got back I was most dissapointed to
realise that I hadn't met any of you dear folk who were also there. How terribly remiss and inexcusable. A situation which will most definitely be remedied at the next one!

How are the size ? Basically the same than the Ad whatever T-shirts ?
Conidering the shirt's price, I want to be sure !!!

I almost got a photo signed of Carl. It was a photo of him, rather drunk aged
24.
I stood beside Carl outside the SBE last year. But as he was talking to a
friend at the time and I did not want to interrupt, and as I was a little tongue
tied to say the least, I never plucked up the courage to ask Carl to sign my
photo of him. However, I did get a signed poster instead.
I was also too tongue tied to say hello to Richard Stanley, Andrew Collins, and
Anne Sudworth. And although I was tempted to make an aquaintance, I chose not
to say hello to Lynn, Scarlett (and Eden?) as I did not want to intrude on their
family privacy.

Suggest somebody emails the shop and the Watchman and reports this issue regarding Pay Pal. Although one can pay by HSBC.
The on-line shop is now based in Wiltshire (possibly run a friend of a friend, funnily enough!)

I wasn't able to use Pay Pal (boooo) it told me the merchant's address wasn't valid and it needed the merchant's address to send the merchandise or something like that... so I used my credit card instead (double boo). With the exchange and shipping it only came to a little over $35 CDN for one of the Hellfire tshirts. Not bad.
Now let's see how long it takes to get here...

I'll skip over the limitations of the venue we rattled around in on Sunday and concentrate on the gig itself. Carl's voice has improved much since I last heard him and was really quite impressive. I think he's been doing a lot more singing of late and as there has only been one other gig this year then that bodes well. The music was also very different. Considering it was a mekul festival things were really very goffick and olde school (they had flour :)). Penetration was big and chuggy which shows they can still do it when they want to and Moonchild actually had bigger bollocks than usual, but on the whole it was slower with much more twiddley guitar. It wasn't dull though. Carl poured his heart into the performance and there was a certain emotional charge that was almost unnervingly up-close and personal and was actually quite exhausting to watch. I've mentioned before that often Carl seems to be duetting with himself but that came over much
more clearly than it does on the recorded stuff. There is a point in Zoon which I think is on the CD in but doesn't really stand out in the mix where a little voice says "help me" in a The Fly stylee. He did that really clearly in not his usual singing voice and it was really very creepy, but there were a few other places where he was singing as a conversation with himself, and you could see and hear distinct Carls. The atmosphere was far less exultant than the Astoria, but there were certainly a few eddies in the fabric of reality.I found myself in the lighting rig as Psychonaut started and had to snap back before my body went floppy and worried everyone. From the songs and the emphasis placed on certain phrases I got the impression Carl was up to something dream related. The "Wake up NOW!" of Mourning Sun was missing but he seemed to be hinting at a different kind of awareness ~(I know that's implied anyway but it was emphasised)~ and there was
an much repeated extra line in Straight to the light - "Open your eyes". The thing that really stood out from Dawnrazor was "Only Dreams Survive" which pops up again in She (which they didn't do but would have been right at home in the set.)It was very dream based - admittedly it's a frequently recurring theme in their work but it seemed to be more than chance based on a random collection of songs from their back catalogue. They'd also been playing with the music a bit and depite a geekish familiarity with every Ne(ph)/(f)ilim song I wasn't sure which song was coming next from the intro several times. Whether that's indicative of the promised 2010 album being more than an "early 2005" statement I'm not sure but it gives me hope.
You missed a treat if you missed it...and it made me regret more than ever that I missed out on the Ceromonies. I'll just have to get the DVD. I'm sure things will come back to me so this probably isn't my last
word on the evening.

They're actually cheaper than at the gig (before the postage at least).
They were relatively pricey but I've seen worse. In dollars I guess they don't
come out well. What put me off was the recycling of old designs...and the
"military shirts" were...probably a good idea on paper.

I do wish the old bugger would perform "She"! One of the best songs on Mourning
Sun.
Having been at the Astoria 2007 gig (at the very front, opposite Carl) and at
the two Shepherds Bush gigs in 2008 (standing more comfortably, beside the sound
area, where I did not get crushed), the songs performed were also performed at
these gigs collectively. So I am glad that I did not spend my pennies on
Hellfire. However, I hope to go and see him again after new material has been
released. (Next year? :? )
