Los Angeles' DJ Monkey's Music Finds a Home in Award Winning Filmmakers upcoming Movie, "W" The Movie
Los Angeles' acclaimed fusionistic-spoken word act DJ Monkey, fronted by La Crescenta-based longtime musician/journalist, Joey Alkes, has placed three songs in award winning writer-director Al Eaker's soon to be released, dark political satire, "W" The Movie. The three songs by the simian crew, that appear in the film's sound track are, "U-Boat"
from the debut CD Another Evolution (7Records/Synergy), which is also in the track of the film's promo trailer; "3rd World War," which is the title track to DJ MONKEY'S sophomore effort, and "Everybody Died Last Week" from the same second CD, which was released this past July on Squid Music.
Eaker's last film, Jesus and Her Gospel of Yes, was Voted Best Experimental Film in the Las Vegas July 2004 New York Film and Video Festival, and it has been widely acclaimed throughout the indie film world from Rotterdam, London, Cannes to Singapore and Buenos Aires. "W' THE MOVIE, Eaker's latest effort, will be released sometime this May.
Eaker, who originally hails from Detroit, says, "A World of chaos began when a Word crashed in the desert and brought War! " W" The Movie is a surreal satire on the failed George W Bush presidency, 911, the Invasion of Iraq, the administration's devastating failure of Katrina and a presidency
spiraling out of control. In short, '" W" is about a world of chaos created by the super villain W. "The music chosen for " W" plays a vital role." "Thanks to Myriam Scherchen of Tahra Records in France, we were able to use historic recordings of the music of Beethoven (conducted by World War 2 Berlin Philharmonic conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler) and Mahler (conducted by Myriam's father, the conductor Herman Scherchen, who fled the Nazis and was abused by Italian fascists)" he says. "A message, conveyed throughout the film, is the role of arts (and artists) in standing, almost alone at first, against our own inhuman atrocities (remember the Dixie Chicks? Hmmm, they were right after all and waiting for apologies forthcoming, I'm sure)." " ''W' the movie begins with the anti-war music of Ludwig van Beethoven, to the humanist music of Gustav Mahler, and follows through to the outspoken and provocative music of today from DJ Monkey", Eaker explains. "I had heard the song
"U-Boat" and felt it would work well with the film's message and, after getting in contact with Joey Alkes, Mick McMains (the act's founders) we decided to use this and their song " Everybody Died Last Week," as well. The latter song is my personal favorite and was a perfect fit for a telling scene in the film. Of course, it all begins with Beethoven, he of the fifth's 'death knocking at the door' juxtaposed to W riding his bomb through the air, he of the Eroica's portrait of the dictator Napoleon (as W surveys 'his' world, hand in coat). The scene takes place in a local pub. News of 911 is flashing across the bar's TV screen and time has frozen still. The flawed protagonist of the film, BlueMahler, begins to realize this and eventually becomes aware that they have been in that bar for a very long time, unable to leave or get on with their lives. "Everybody died last week" plays throughout this bar scene, perfectly enhancing and summarizing the eerie mood. "A few months after filming finished, Ernest Stewart, the film's Associate producer, contacted myself and Ross St. Just (my co-director) and asked if we had heard DJ Monkey's " 3rd World War". I confessed that I had not taken the time to listen to it. Ernest encouraged us to do so immediately and, upon hearing it, we agreed with Ernie that " 3rd World War" would be the final musical touch we needed."
Ernest Stewart a.k.a. Uncle Ernie, who is currently celebrated as the managing editor and publisher of the politically influential Issues & Alibis Magazine says: "W" is a salute to 1950's horror films, it's a comedyand it's as serious as a heart attack. Sometimes you've got to laugh to keep from crying and the real W" has given the world enough to cry about. "W" asks the question what if the Bush family came from outer space? Wouldn't that explain a lot of things, wouldn't it? If you think Michael Moore pissed off the Junta you ain't seen nothing yet and you have never
seen a film like "W!"
About DJ Monkey, Stewart says, "I asked for a advanced copy of "3rd World War" to review it for the magazine and was amazed by the title song and immediately insisted that we use it in the film. As soon as Alfred heard it he agreed it was the perfect final musical touch. I was a DJ for 30 years and I've never heard the like of DJ Monkey, they are an original masterpiece! You've never heard anyone like DJ Monkey , which I think, is why they go so well with "W." We're currently hoping to make a video of "3 rd World War" with concert footage and scenes from the film."
Al Eaker remarks, From Beethoven's " Eroica" to DJ Monkey's '3rd World War" 'W' the movie paints a vivid portrait of music's role in opposing humanity's rush to self-destruction." About DJ Monkey, Stewart says, "I asked for a advanced copy of "3rd World War" to review it for the magazine and was amazed by the title song and immediately insisted that we use it in the film.
Multi-award winning DJ Monkey has been seen by critics and fans alike as "Original. Emotional. Fresh. Provocative. Hip;" while Alternative Press said their debut, "Another Evolution could be
the most important CD of 2004", and Francisco H. Ciriza -San Diego Union Tribune commented that, "This (DJ Monkey's Another Evolution) very well may be the most unique, interesting, and best music you'll hear this year and for some to come."
Comprised of a large ensemble and a multi-media presentation, founders Joey Alkes and Mick McMains have been the beneficiaries of the talents a number of artists and musicians. Among the many individual stories concerning DJ MONKEY, is the evolution of prominent "gangsta rapper" LiL TipToe's conscious street words which as a offset to Joey and Mick's old school poetics suggest the value of the rap form in meaningful progressive music. It also further links rap to the spoken word of the Beatniks and Hard Bop Jazz experimentalist of legend.
Members, such as singer-songwriter Cynthia Contreras, guitarist-songwriter Ian McMains, sax player Michael Schneider, bassist Moose McMains, dj-scratcher-songwriter
MR1, and violinist Lita Neumann , have also furthered DJ MONKEY'S opportunity to develop it's pioneering sound. Certainly the multi-media talents of Drew Hatter have been an important contributor to getting DJ Monkey's music heard. Hatter won the 2004 AHA Conference "Album Cover of the Year" for the act's Another Evolution CD cover; and also produced and directed the acts first video, the award winning, "U-Boat".
But what makes DJ Monkey truly unique is Joey and Mick's ability to combine so many seemingly divergent elements and cultures into a contemporary radio friendly pop music. There is little doubt that their ability to write catchy chorus melodies with pertinent ideas and hooky wordplays, and their counterpoint instrumental alliterations, makes DJ MONKEY'S music a truly compelling mix for the modern music world.
On the look forward, Dennis Schraub, President of DJ Monkey's label SQUID, is also in the process of creating a video for a song
from 3rd World War. Schraub estimates that the video for "God Is An Underachiever". ""God...."should be completed sometime in late March or early April, for a May release," says Schraub. "DJ Monkey will be touring in the southwest (Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) in March and April, and can be seen at Dr. Music here in Los Angeles in Eagle Rock in May.
