Most here probably either have bought these sets or have the recordings already
(or both), so no need really for a recommendation. Just a couple of comments
anyway:
I think the DG-set is very nice in reproducing the original LP's as cd's and the
original LP-covers as cd-covers (but why are the lieder recordings woth
Fischer-Dieskau not included?). And the notes are fine, too. Perhaps DG should
have reprinted the original notes in the booklet for those without a magnifying
glass.
EMI should have done the same in regards to the lay-out. It doesn't matter that
much to me, as I rip and stream the discs - but it can be a slight pain to
gather together the original albums (EMI's not alone - Philips Arrau Heritage is
the same thing: The discs gather recordings from various records. I can be
timeconsuming to figure out the original order of the pieces. These boxsets are
mostly aimed at collectors, I would think, and won't collectors prefer
collections of original albums as with the DG set?)
However it was a pleasure to read Leslie Gerber's notes: They are exemplary in
giving valuable facts (probably especially so for people not as familiar with
Richter as members of this group). Reading them, I just had to see who the
author was, and was pleasantly surprised to see it was a member of the group. In
other words: Great job, Leslie!
At the price, both sets are really outstanding bargains.
Kind regards
Soeren
