Re: Tino Sehgal exhibition - singers wanted
FYI. The MCA is looking for singers who are available to take part in the
exhibition below.
TINO SEHGAL proposal
For the exhibition Situation: Collaborations, collectives and artist
networks from Sydney, Singapore and Berlin at the Museum of Contemporary
Art, Sydney.
June 14 – August 21 2005
Each time a visitor enters the room, the singer, dressed as a museum
attendant, will turn slowly toward the wall, with back to viewer and sing:
This is Propaganda, you know, you know
This is Propaganda, you know, you know
Turn slowly back and look viewer in eye:
Then quote title of work:
Tino Sehgal: This is Propaganda, 2002. Courtesy Jan Mot Gallery.
- lyrics and tune from the song ‘Propaganda’ by Briskeby (Norwegian group)
The performer will sing the chorus, slower and higher than the Briskeby
original.
If more than one person enters the gallery, wait until everyone has come in
and then start. Everyone has to be able to see it.
Notes:
This is one of the easiest pieces to find participants, who are usually
sourced from an amateur choir. It needs women over 40 who can sing –
professional singers can apply. But we want it beautiful, not overwhelmingly
virtuosic.
Tino will not be able to come to Sydney but will be as involved as
possible – listen on phone, webcam auditions. He would like to choose the
voices.
Need to show the work in a museum situation – can’t be next to sound piece
or video. This creates a time conflict. Would prefer it not at the entrance.
Experience the work, the sound, the guard, at the end of the show so that
the two come together and coincide. Preferably next to the Berlin part of
the show. In Venice it was performed next to a Cerith Wyn Evans photograph
and Tacita Dean window work (quite traditional media).
Presentation will begin during the opening. Rehearse the performers with a
webcam, in the space.
Two shifts/day, 3 ˝ hours each. 14 shifts/week. Don’t have a break. Need
about 5-6 people. Paid $20/hour, with double time on public holidays.
