Hi all,

assuming you're off to the UK in the near future, the following series
of workshops might be of interest - especially if you fancy combining
singing and hiking through the countryside!

The man running the show is David Burbidge who organised a workshop for
Solidarity Choir in Sedbergh during our UK tour in 2001:

1. NORTHERN HARMONY COMMUNITY SINGING DAY in Dent, Cumbria. Feb.29 2004.

Join this wonderful choir from Vermont, USA for a day of workshops,
concert and a singing supper with several other community choirs from
the North of Britain. Shape note and songs from around the world. The
Dent Memorial Hall, Dent, Cumbria. Cost from £12 for the
day(concessions) to £15 (£12 concessoins.)

2. THE HILLS ARE ALIVE - three day singing walk through the central
Lake District. May 28-31.

A tour for singers with some experience of hillwalking via the Langdale
valley, Wast Water, Buttermere and Borrowdale with a van to carry heavy
bags and tents. Giving concerts in fellside chapels, inns and caves.
Non-walkers can come by car. (More details below.)

3. JURA HARMONY SINGING HOLIDAY - on this beautiful Scottish island.
July 3-10.

Spend a week in the magnificent Jura house (which sleeps 16 in 12 rooms)
learning songs and arrangements from Scotland and around the world. Led
by David Burbidge, there will also be walks through the famous walled
garden and woods to the sea, expeditions to the whirlpool at
Corryvrekkin via George Orwell's house, and opportunities to teach/sing
your own songs.

Optional concert on the last night singing alongside local singers.

£295 if paid in full by April 1 - includes all vegetarian food,
accommodation and tuition. £50 deposit secures a place.

4. THE SINGING CYCLISTS - Lands End-John O'Groats tour. 1-4 wks with
van/cook. July 23-Aug.22

Join a community of harmony singers cycling from Lands End to John
O'Groats, visiting local choirs and giving concerts in a variety of
locations. Varied repertoire - early applicants can help choose the
songs. Starts with a weekend in Lamorna Cove, Cornwall (can be taken on
its own) and then full tilt to Scotland via Sustrans routes - all with
little traffic, some completely car free. Cycling c.40 miles a day with
a van to carry heavy bags and tents and a cook to feed you. Come for the
first weekend, a week or the whole trip. Or invite us to visit your

raise funds for a charity which teaches the orphans of Kenyan AIDS
victims to become cycle repair people.

5. FRANKIE ARMSTRONG-welcome return to Sedbergh of this great
singer/voice teacher. Oct.23/24

As well as being a fabulous performer Frankie is well known as one of
the pioneers of voice work in this country and the founder of the
Natural Voice Practitioners Network. Her workshop will include
connecting the voice to the body, the emotions and the group as well as
looking at performance skills. Come as an individual or with a group if
you'd like a master class. Plus Saturday nght singing supper.

6. SINGING SETTLE-CARLISLE - a railway harmony singing weekend. Dent
Youth Hostel. Nov.13/14

Learn songs about the building of this magnificent mountain railway, and
then sing them in the stations, on the train and on a walk through the
wild Pennines via the Ribblehead viaduct, the Station Inn and a tiny
fellside chapel where over 400 of the navvies and their families are
buried, killed by the appalling conditions they lived and worked in.
Staying in the luxurious Dent Youth Hostel the price includes two nights
accommodation, food, train, tution and walking guide. £89.

7. FOLK CAROL WEEKEND - folk and West Gallery carols and singing walk.
South Lakeland. Dec.5/6

Learn carols in 2, 3, and four part harmony with David Burbidge and Paul
Guppy - these lively carols were banned by Cromwell's Government and
after they had been resurected, by the Victorian clergy. The singing
walk will include singing in a cave, by a waterfall, in a wood and round
the roaring fires of the Three Shires Inn.

8. CAROLLING CUMBRIAN COTTAGES - learn/revise and sing carols in harmony
on starlit walk. Dec.20
