Hi all

The wonderful Frankie Armstrong (UK) will be in Sydney shortly and is
presenting a public workshop on the evening of Monday 9 March 6-9pm. All
are welcome.

The venue will be confirmed shortly. There have been a few hiccups finding a
space but I wanted to get this out to give you some notice. Cost is $25 /
20.

Frankie is in Australia for a short time teaching acting students at Sydney
Uni and NIDA. Her workshops like her own approach to music-making and
life are inspirational, uplifting and energising. The workshop is The Joy
of Singing.

From Frankie¹s website (www.frankiearmstrong.com):

Singing is one of the easiest and most accessible ways to give us a feeling
of well-being, relaxation and energy. Singing with others also allows us to
create a sense of communal celebration. Recent medical research has verified
how parts of the brain¹s pleasure centres are stimulated by singing, and how
fuller breathing stimulates the circulation.

We start with simple body loosening and voice exercises. These lead into
ways of playing with creative vocal expression. The workshop also includes
songs and chants from different parts of the world. The workshop is open to
anyone regardless of their prior experience. We create a supportive,
easy-going and playful atmosphere, with an approach of exploration rather
than Œgetting it right².

Please let me know if you are interested and I¹ll keep you in the loop with
venue (inner city or East)

Regards

Christina

Hi all,

I have a new comedy/performance choir called ROCKTAPUS! and am thus putting
a general call out for experienced singers who may be interested in joining
- in particular basses and sopranos.

Repertoire consists of a cappella arrangements of rock songs (Queen, The
Killers, Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi, Radiohead, and so on).

The idea is (once repertoire is established) to put a show together that can
gig/tour comedy festivals. Most of the members come from a comedy and/or
singing and/or acting background and are therefore a somewhat transient
bunch so the more people we have, the easier it is to swap and change
line-up for gigs!

Requirements:

Previous performance and singing experience are essential.

Rock fans with a sense of silliness are encouraged to join!

Preferably singers (especially sops) who come from a contemporary rather
than choral background.

Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons 4pm - 6pm in Glebe.

If you are interested or wish to find out more, please send me an email with
your contact details and we'll talk.

Cheers.

Hi all

Bel a cappella is performing a beautiful mixture of pieces in a wonderful
venue on 3 May. Come along for a Sunday afternoon of great classical music.
Two of these pieces, Durufle's requiem and Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb,
are accompanied by the organ, with David Drury as organist.

We are also performing two beautiful a cappella pieces - Tomkin's O God, the
proud are risen against us and Taverner's Funeral Ikos.

The concert will be led by Bel's new musical director, Anthony Pasquill.
There will also be a cellist performing a Sculthorpe piece.

This should be an extraordinary concert and well worth the ticket price of
$25. You can buy tickets from me, or through the Bel website, or simply turn
up!

If you can't come, or even if you can, please forward this info onto others
who you think may be interested.

Cheers
Margaret

Hi all

It¹s been pointed out that I haven¹t given the venue details for this
concert (see below). I put Christ Church St Laurence in the subject but that
could be anywhere!!!

The address is 812 George St Sydney. It is near Railway Square (Central
Station) so easy to get to by train, light rail or bus!

Cheers
Margaret

Do you long to sing with a talented, respected and dynamic choir?

Voices from the Vacant Lot have been performing across Australia and
overseas for over twenty years. Our repertoire includes world music and
original compositions occasionally accompanied with percussion and
eclectic instruments. Our performances are described as energetic, fun
and joyful.

We keenly support social justice causes and we enjoy singing about the
issues that concern us: land rights, community, life and justice. We
view music as a force for the empowerment of all people.

We are looking for committed altos, basses and tenors with singing and
performing experience. An ability to read music is preferable. No
audition necessary. Membership of the choir is subject to a three months
trial period.

Call Michelle on 0410 340 412 or Jessica on 0401 879 459.
We meet weekly on Wednesday nights in Waterloo from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

For more information or to hear some song samples go to

Hope to hear from you soon,

Michelle & Jessica

[cid:image001.jpg@...]Glory Bound Groove Train was formed in 1997
under the musical directorship of performer/arranger Linda Calgaro. Performing a
repertoire of African-American gospel and gospel-inspired music, Glory Bound
Groove Train is a choir of 18 spirited voices, with an edge.

Since forming, Glory Bound Groove Train has performed almost continually,
appearing at the World Peace Forum at the Darling Harbour Convention Centre, the
Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Town Hall, in clubs and churches, and at
community events throughout Sydney. Other performance highlights include guest
appearances at concerts, parties, charity fund-raisers, weddings and other
services. Now in their 13th year, their membership and repertoire continues to
grow and develop.

The choir appeals to a range of audiences no matter their musical or religious
preference. They have received praise for the energy and joy of Glory Bound

their singing with people who love music with soul and heart.

Nothing Without Belinda

[cid:image002.jpg@...] Nothing Without Belinda is a mixed choir
currently based in Erskineville. NWB has been running for over 13 years and
sings stuff from around the world, from traditional choral works to contemporary
pop arrangements.

Conceived in a Wilson Street loungeroom, NWB still inhabits the inner city but
draws its members from near and far. They have always placed an emphasis on
having fun as much as sounding good; and as they've developed they have chosen
the songs they sing with the aim of making a statement about life, love and
liberation.

NWB released a CD, Waterloo Tuesdays, in 2004 and over the years have performed
at a wide range of events and venues - from weddings to festivals, from Reverse
Garbage to the Manly Ferry to the Sydney Opera House.

Recently NWB has been developing a multimedia collaboration based on several
Bulgarian folk songs. There is no truth to the rumour that their name may
change to Nothing Without Bulgaria

at a wide range of events and venues - from weddings to festivals, from Reverse
Garbage to the Manly Ferry to the Sydney Opera House.

Recently NWB has been developing a multimedia collaboration based on several
Bulgarian folk songs. There is no truth to the rumour that their name may
change to Nothing Without Bulgaria

We¹re raising funds to support Basundhara, a non-profit registered charity
in India which is a rehabilitation centre for the abandoned and destitute:
children, unwed mothers, women and elders in distress. The care, shelter and
long-term rehabilitation of these marginalised groups is Basundhara¹s work.
Their vision is to create a society where every child enjoys the right to a
dignified life by introducing orphaned, abandoned and destitute children
into the mainstream of life and empowering destitute and distressed women
through self help packages and training.

A tough task, indeed, in India.
Please forward this email to your friends even a few dollars goes a long
way there.

If you¹re not familiar with them, here¹s a little about the performers ...
The Honeybees is a high-energy, not-for-profit a cappella community choir.
Inspired by the uplifting and passionate quality of the gospel genre, they
sing with an energy that is hard to resist.

Café of the Gate of Salvation is a highly-sought a cappella choir, also
inspired by the African-American vocal tradition; the passionate, committed
and exciting music of gospel and spirituals.

The members of Sorelle quartet draw on their vast professional experience in
R & B, jazz, music theatre and opera, blending diverse vocal styles to form
a rich, dynamic and unique sound.

HI singers
Thanks those of you who replied to observe that I was still not attached, no
really, my flyer was undone because they won't have that kind of thing at
sydneyacappella@ahem, no yahoo! about it. So here in cyber-longhand:

The choir in which my longtime singing sidekick (I'll get a kick for that)
Leyla Nassif and I sing and will shortly be appearing, among ten new friends and
beaut singers, is CHOIR INFUSION. We're being led by our director Lisa
Roberts-Scott to our first show (if you don't count singing Nkosi Sikelele and
Advance Australia Where? for the South African cricket team in January) at eight
pm on Friday tenth of July in the Independent Theatre in North Sydney, at which
Lisa happens to be Artist in Residence.
For me it's a break from strict acappella chorus as we are accompanied for a
number of songs by our rehearsal pianist and maestro Adam Sofo on the
Independent's superb Stuart piano. We are most of us show-offs so everyone has a
moment with a blast of light opera, some modern gospel, soul and latin in this
set of mostly original pieces, of which this performance will help finance a
recording.
WHERE? The Independent Theatre is up the high end of Miller Street close to
the corner of Ridge Street and opposite the Library. Theatre is
turn-of-the-century opulent, the sort can provoke excessive champagne drinking.
It will be available. We encourage dressing up.
   WHEN? Eight o'clock please.
TICKETS are $28 for adults and $18 for children. Box Office 02 99556580

Just had a thought, if there are any groups out there who want to hop
onto this gig and do a set (length is up to you), let me know.

This is a fairly casual night, but I thought it might be a nice
opportunity for anyone who wants to test some new songs or just get a
bit more stage time. Plus, it's always lovely to mingle with other
members of the a cappella family!

Probably best to email me at lindacalgaro@...

Flinders' "A-Chord" concert events to help Sydney's Street Choir
A passion for music and a desire to support the community's disadvantaged are at
the very heart of special concert events involving Matthew Flinders Anglican
College students during their Sydney Music Tour in June.

The two concerts, celebrating the concordance of musical diversity and
community, will be held in Sydney's City Recital Hall, Angel Place on Friday,
June 26.

Hosted by Matthew Flinders Anglican College, the "A-Chord" concerts will
showcase the talents of three very different groups.
Just like the combination of a "chord" (the harmonious blending of three or more
individual notes) and "accord" (to harmonize or go together), this shared
passion for music and desire to support the community's disadvantaged are at the
very heart of the special concert events.

Bringing their talents to the stage will be the inspiring Sydney Street Choir,
the versatile University of Newcastle Choir and more than 100 students from
Flinders performing in the choir, band and string orchestra.

These community concerts have been organised as part of Flinders' 20th
anniversary celebrations.

This is the College's 15th annual music tour and the efforts to host this
community concert in Sydney - a major event in the tour program - fits with the
College's endeavours to foster community spirit through music. The College's
efforts have already been recognised by a National Teaching Excellence Merit
Award presented to the Music Department in 2005 in recognition of community
merit.

Matthew Flinders Anglican College's Music Program has gained renown for its
exceptional quality and outstanding achievements. The College's music ensembles
compete regularly in regional and state-wide competitions receiving gold and
platinum awards. In 2006 the College Chorale, String Orchestra and Wind Symphony
performed in the Sydney Opera House as part of the International Music Festival
and were awarded gold and silver prizes. They have performed in venues including
the Sydney Opera House, City Recital Hall Angel Place, Sydney Town Hall and the
BMW Edge Theatre, and have also toured Europe and New Zealand.

Flinders Head of Music Nick Campbell said this year's A Chord concerts were a
gesture of support for the Sydney Street Choir, which was similar to the
Melbourne-based Choir of Hard Knocks.
Since 2001, the Sydney Street Choir has been empowering listeners and themselves
through the healing power of music and song to find pathways out of social
isolation.

"There's a side to music that requires musicians to be worldly, to have a
greater understanding than their immediate community," Mr Campbell said.

"This will create an opportunity for our students to reflect that even though
these people may appear disadvantaged or different to themselves, they still
have the capacity to work together and share and express emotion.

"Music is a common language, regardless of background. I'm hoping these concerts
will create a sense of emotion in our
students, and be an enrichment to their own music experience. "
Mr Campbell said the College was relying on the involvement of the audiences to
support the concert events, with entry by donation and all money raised going to
help the Sydney Street Choir.

Members of the Sydney Street Choir are homeless or disadvantaged men and women,
and the only way the choir can continue to sing is through the generosity of
people supporting it.

Choir members have been confronted with some of the toughest challenges life can
present, and they inspire audiences with their personal stories of how they
overcame their challenges, and realised their dreams. They perform mostly
original songs in a unique theatrical style.

The choir has performed on various TV shows, at Sydney Town Hall, Sydney Opera
House, Sydney Conference Centre, and regularly visit hospitals and charity
organisations. Recently they visited the Choir of Hard Knocks to join them on
stage at Melbourne Town Hall.

Choir director Peter Lehner said: "Members of the Sydney Street Choir are living
testament to the changes that can be made in people's lives through the power of
song and the support of the community."

Also appearing at the evening concert will be the University of Newcastle
Chamber Choir. This choir won national acclaim last year when it took first
place in Channel 7's Battle of the Choirs, hosted by David Koch.

Formed in 1995, the choir consists of students and community members, all with a
love of singing and who enjoy performing challenging and varied repertoire. The
choir has toured internationally four times, and performed in St Paul's
Cathedral, London, Westminster Abbey, and Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris.

In 2007, the choir won all three of the divisions entered at the National
Eisteddfod held in Canberra: the Open Sacred Choral Award, the Open Contemporary
Australian Choral event and the inaugural Australian Open Choir Championship.

The choir has a wide-ranging repertoire, from the Renaissance to music from this
century and includes a number of Australian works.
The A Chord concert venue, Angel Place, while not as famous as the Sydney Opera
House, has been heralded by The Bulletin as an "acoustic and aesthetic triumph".

Based on the classical configuration of the 19th Century European concert hall,
the shoebox-shape design includes gently raking stalls and two galleries that
wrap around both sides and rear of the auditorium creating a sense of intimacy
between audience and performers.

The 1238-seat concert hall regularly plays host to Musica Viva Australia, the
Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian
Brandenburg Orchestra – and now to Matthew Flinders Anglican College.

The A-Chord concerts will take place on June 26 at 2pm and 7.30pm. Due to prior
commitments, The University of Newcastle Choir will only be appearing at the
evening event. Entry is by donation with all proceeds going to the Sydney Street
Choir.

To book phone the City Recital Hall Angel Place on 02 8256 2222 or 1300 797 118
or visit www.cityrecitalhall.com

Matthew Flinders Anglican College will hold a Pre-Tour Music Concert on Friday,
June 5 at the College Sports Centre from 7pm.

Although it¹s still a few weeks before Bel a cappella¹s next concert (Choral
Riches - Newington College Chapel, Sunday 16th August), we can offer you an
opportunity to hear Bel perform in the John Lamble Australasian Open Age
Choral Championships next Sunday, 28th June, 5pm at Kings School Parramatta.

The Choral Championships are the finals of all five choral events in the
2009 Sydney Eisteddfod Choir, Show Choir, Sacred Choral, Community Choir
and Chamber Choir. The top three place-getters in each event qualify to
sing in the Championships.

The great news is that Bel entered the Sacred Choral and Chamber Choir
events and won both of them!!

This is shaping up to be a great event, with plenty of entertainment
provided by a good cross-section of choirs from all over Sydney - and
further afield - as they are assessed by two highly respected adjudicators,
Brett Weymark and George Torbay.

Tickets are $23 (Concession $18), and can be purchased on line at
