Hiya Russ! You missed a good party over at Sean's BTW
"Circuit Bending" is this sort of underground music thing where
basically you short out kids musical toys to create new and weird sounds.
Favorite targets are Speak & Spell's and Casio SK-1 samplers. The sounds
they make are embraced by folks in the ambient/noise music crowd, but also
by anyone into electronic weirdness. Some of the people who are really into
it will modify these old toys with switches and extra knobs and stuff -
there's something really cool about an innocent children's toy bristling
with military grade switches belching out some of the most evil sounds
you've ever heard.
So the question is whether you can go into a 2600 and add in a few
switches and resistors to randomize the audio output. I don't know, but I'm
pretty sure I remember someone trying it without much success. I know that
a couple people have tried to circuit bend NES consoles, but with little
success. Seems that you get similar results by popping in a Game Genie and
just entering random codes.
In a way, Russ' "frying" thing embraces the methodology and aesthetic
goals if circuit bending... if that helps.
