Thanks Jack,
Great article on them. So what's the deal?? Is Taarka no mas? Is it now just Davis and Enion? C'mon guys, spill... (E)nquring minds want to know...
I just uploaded the 9/22 CT. Yankee show to Bluegrassbox. I don't know how long it takes then to move it from the upload to d/l directory, but check it out in a couple days.
OK, I wasn't gonna do it, since I got a whopping 1 response last time, but for really, really the last time, I will offer up my entire Taarka catalog, which includes:
Tarrka members Enion Pelta and David Tiller have a new
web site and had an article written about them in the

Howdy, wow, we're up to 19 now. By a couple of serendipitous turns of events, I just got in 2, yes two shows in. I can see Jack jumping up & down right now hehe...
I wanna send these to the band so they can ID the rest of the songs, so I can start planting them on some servers I know. Jack, send me some discs and I'll get them right out. Anybody else who want to bnp, send me an e-mail.
Here is the 1st one, 2nd below. If you can wade through the technical stuff, I put together a set list to the best of my abilities, got about 2/3 of them... Super Dave did a, well, super, job of re-mastering this. There were a few loud, obnoxious rugby players in that night. You can even barely hear the bbaaaaaasssssssoollllooooooo that one guy screamed out while James was doing his thing...

Finally
the holidays are over and I have the opportunity to sit down and catalog what I
have in the way of Taarka bootlegs.
A
couple of people wrote to me expressing interest in copies; PLEASE write again
as my sweet and lovely wife accidentally erased my .pst file which contained
the entire contents of my inbox. Completely unrecoverable. Life
goes on, even without an email record….
Here
is what I have right now, although I have more than a handful of promises to
receive other shows; I estimate that some 25 shows have been recorded. I would
love to get my hand on the opening set we did for YMSB on 11-14-02. Of course, my favorite show of 2002, the Owl n
Thistle on 9-28, was not recorded. There is a video/soundboard recording
of the Tractor Tavern show on 11-30 that I will have a copy of very soon.
I
have a pretty rough recording of 6-6-02 at the Snake & Weasel. C- quality. (this is
due to the room sound, not the archivist).
There
is a great sounding soundboard/mic blend from Horning's Hideaway main stage 8-17-02 B+ quality.
The
widely distributed Mt Tabor 8-17-02 (2 discs) I would give a C+ or B+ depending
on which source (and I have two) but my own performance gets a C-.
And a
soundboard from the Boom Boom Room in SF 9-19-02 with Paul Hanson (Bela Fleck and many more) sitting
in which is only partial from the second set. A- quality, but only five songs.
I
recently updated my website and am in the process of uploading some Taarka and
other bootleg mp3’s for a boots page – it will be up by the end of
the month. http://www.jameswhiton.com
Thanks
for listening,
-jw

To James,
I'm thrilled you received the tapes! After Bumbershoot, due to your
lengthy tour, I knew it would be a long time before you could receive
them.
That rare 1973 Gabor Szabo album, CTI, is unique and among my top
"Island" possessions (not available today). Around 1980, I needed a new
vinyl copy to replace the old one, and discovered it was no longer
available. Panic'ed, after work one night I drove from West LA to record
store after record store meandering thru LA back to Pasadena - to FIND
that one jewel. I finally struck it rich in a bin at an obscure record
store in East LA.
To list,
My first exposure happened upon Taarka at Bumbershoot on the crossroads
of two pathways. Listened to two numbers but then on "Bird Fish Falls" I
raised my hand, and loudly proclaimed SOLD to "donate" for a Taarka CD.
Later, I expressed to James exactly "what" put me over the top to buy
that CD! I lauded his virtuosity, particularly his percussionistic style
solo. Strikingly, James' immediate retort was this: "I really feel
lucky to be playing with these talented people." (I was thinking, "they
should feel lucky playing with you." Later I learned why James said
that: Everybody in TAARKA is excellent!
Taarka was THE greatest discovery at Bumbershoot 2002. And the members
of Taarka are the finest people you would ever want to meet. May their
success exceed their dreams.

Oh, by the way,
For anyone who was planning on going, it appears as though the Taarka
show in Port Townsend (orig. scheduled for Fri Dec 13th) has been
canceled.
Wonderful business, this...apparently we got double booked.
This means the only Taarka performance left in 2002 will be at Jazz
Bones in Tacoma on Wednesday Dec 11th.

Hi Bill,
Please accept our belated thanks for the very nice packages you sent
each of us. The road has been kind to us, but also quite hectic and
things are just now starting to return to normal in our lives! I
finally had a chance to listen to that Gabor Szabo record (it's called
Mizrab, for any interested parties; Bill sent it to me because a song of
mine, "Como Llamaste," reminded him of a track; it has folks like Billy
Cobham, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette on it, so obviously it is quite
worth listening to).
I have a few nicely recoded bootlegs of Taarka; if you (or anyone else)
would be interested, just send me an email and I can give you a catalog
of what I have.

Jack,
At Bumbershoot, I had an external Sony mic "ECM-MS907" on my Canon
mini-DV camcorder, and was "right on top of the group" (they being on the
pathway and not on a stage far away) turning the mic in the direction of
their hidden amps as I panned in order to capture the audio. It came out
very good because I was soooo CLOSE. Good luck recording. Of course the
best would be to run a line right off the in-house system. Perhaps
Taarka would allow you.
I taped Dan Hicks and the Hot licks the day before and was located RIGHT
in front of the stage at the mural amphitheatre. There were speakers at
the front of the stage pointing across the stage at one another (in
addition to others pointed out to the lawn area.
BELIEVE ME, my recording of Taarka was sooo much better! Because I was
CLOSE. And that's the key. Other than capturing audio off the in-house
system, "maybe" the band could announce that "this performance" is being
taped, and therefor they would allow you to crawl around the stage (as
they do at Austin City Limits kind of tapings).
It is really nice of the band to allow video recordings of them, but also
marketing SMART.
If you capture a GREAT recording, please let me know. I finally received
news that Taarka had received my personal letters and the four video
tapes I gave them, via an old college friend's daughter who talked to
Enion at the show in Ballard. I plan on making a copy of what I have and
giving it to the "Friends of Pavillion Park" here in Liberty Lake, WA,
for their consideration as a band to schedule for their concert series
next summer.
