Hi taborers!
In http://www.tamborileros.com/entrada.jpg you can see a drawing from
Madrid Council Archives about a "Tarasca". "Tarasca" was a monster
(usually a big snake or dragon) that people used in the processions
of Corpus Christi (or Pentecostes) Feast. This drawing is dated in
1672, and show us the Tarasca of that year. Nowadays Corpus Christi
feasts are associated with p&t music, beasts and ritual dances in
many villages of Spain. Also, the rich Catalonian bestiary is a part
of this tradition.
I like this drawing because it show us an unusual stick (like a big
drum stick) and a big tabor... this is very unusual in Spanish p&t
Iconography... It reminds me Frances Tucker's tabor, giving a
powerous bass beating!
As you can see, the drawing is used as a ticket of an exhibition
about "Theater and festivities during the Spanish Golden Age in
Hapsburg Europe", in Seville. Phil Day sent me it last monday from
the (very) hot Spanish South.
Richard, the Exeter taborer is wonderful!... I´m an Iconography fan!
Vicky, I hope you enjoy a lot in St. Chartier meeting... Xabier
Bosch, the Neil´s bagpipe maker will be there... And Blowzabella
performing at stage! I haven´t enough words...
Best regards,
Juanma Sánchez - Madrid
