Hi everybody,
Angel's nice introduction made me remember that I did not take time
to introduce myself when I joined the list some time ago. so here it is:
I'm a journalist and musician living in Sweden and have had a
somewhat unstable relation to the pipe and tabor for many many years.
But after joining a group in which we play the Playford edition
english country dances (see link below), relations have become much
better. Also a concert with Poul Høxbro made me rethink the whole
idea of pipe-n-taboring. I mostly play drone instruments like
bagpipes, hurdy gurdies, nyckelharpas and such, but I will use this
summer to work on my in spe taboring skills.
Enough of me. Here's my question: I recently bought a tabor from the
English Early music shop in Bradford. It's not a bad instrument at
all but lacks a snare which I will add by myself. I dont want to make
holes in the shell for a peg so I'm wondering if someone on the list
has any suggestion for attaching the gut string and being able to
tighten/loosen it in some other convenient way. There are obvious
solutions to this problem, but I'm looking for something "elegant".
Also, I'm curious If those of you that are indeed using snare strings
on your tabors use one string or many, as I have seen somewhere. And
If you use snarees on boith sides or only on one.
regards to you all and Glad midsommar (happy midsummer's day)!
/JanW
