When people say "Your guitar only has four strings!" I just hold up my left hand to show them I only have four fingers!

Hello:

I don't have much to contribute to the TGR messages, but I do read what comes through the in-box and enjoy the supportive camaraderie of the exchanges. Even the grumpy ones are treated kindly and their concerns -- though poorly phrased -- are eagerly and thoughtfully addressed.

I like the idea of a TGR logo/t-shirt/ theme/whatchacal lit. Point of clarification: Gestalt psychology states that "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts" (not equal to the sum). It's what your brain does to make connections using pieces of given information to fill in the gaps for what isn't given and comes up with a complete "picture". Like the optical illusions "Old Woman or Young Lady" and "Two Vases or Two Faces"; your mind can use the same visual information to switch back and forth between two distinct images.

Sort of like what happens with the sounds from a tenor guitar: Four is More.

Good luck with the t-shirt design. I look forward to seeing it. With both of my minds...

Peace.

Joseph

Hello,
I like the design, I understand why you made it the shape you did for going on a ladies small or medium shirt; I wonder what it will look like on a 3x like I wear; it would cost more to have a smaller and bigger design. I would like one if we get to the point of having them made as long as they don't cost too much.

OK Don, I have just added the design to the photos section as you have suggested. I originally intended TGR members to just look me up under the members section, as I inserted the design there where a photo of me should normally appear.

If you want to see the high resolution version of the original artwork, either in vector or bitmap-based formats, send me your request to teecal@rogers. com, and I will reply back to you offline to the TGR. Hanna has suggested she would like to see the Tenor Guitar text surrounding the centrepiece 4isMore symbol to be in a straight line, and I told her my reasons for putting the text in a circle was to emphasize the worldwide circle of tenorguitarists who gather here on the TGR, and I used the plural form of guitars because I'm sure most TGR members own more than one tenor guitar. Some other reasons for keeping the design to a smaller circular area rather than a wider area is to maintain an efficient print zone that is less costly to produce, and that can be printed or embroidered easily on ball caps and shirt pockets. I also wanted to avoid a horizontal logo that could possibly get too distorted when viewed on TeeShirts that may be worn by some of the ladies in our group. This is not being stated as any kind of chauvanistic remark, but as the happily-married father of four fine daughters who knows and appreciates good-looking design.....Best Regards,

On first sight I kind of like it. The only question that comes to mind... is 4
really more? With all due respect for all the Chi tuners here, 4 may appear as
a string challenged regular 6 string to a large part of the music scene who play
guitars. Perhaps we could state something a little less pretentious...

4 is enough
4 no need for more
4 for more
4 X 4
4 string hatchet players
Fourmally more
Fourmal occasion
4 goodness sake
4 tuners
4 for beers
Strings 4 fingers

And then there is '4 is more', which maybe isn't so bad after all.

Just saw this fleaBay post:

I'd like to build one, but surely it can't cost that much just for the kit? Can
someone here assist me in making up a materials/parts list for the group?

Be sure to watch the vid- you can see/hear it direct at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GJVpTjnPk4&feature=player_embedded
I know an expert makes it look easy, but I am not seeing a whole lot of
hard-to-master technique, there. Your take on that?

I am not sure about reddogguitars.com, though. I find his website to be a bit
too slick for what he calls "simple" guitars. The contradiction between what he
says and what he shows are jarring to me, and I think it is rather a travesty to
have made a guitar out of a real, WW2 era medic box that should have been
donated to the Red Cross Museum. Overall, much too commercial slickness for
what should be a simple thing, IMHO. Too difficult to find prices, too, but I
finally did- he "sells" thru ebay. In quotations because completed auctions
reveals 16 guitars priced from $630 to $968- and not a single sold item. He can
say what he will, but at those prices, this is NOT a "labor of love."

I'd like one, too. I have only a minor suggestion for the design: include
"http://yahoo.com/group/tenorguitarregistry/" at the bottom is much smaller font
size. Otherwise, it looks fine to me.

I'd prefer it be white on a black tee-shirt, or white on another bold or dark
color (royal blue, purple, maroon, etc.) Will you be selling either transfers
or printed tee's? I'd prefer the latter, if the price is right. Can you take
size/color/quantity orders for the group?

My only suggestions would be to bring the "tenor guitars" text into a straight alignment perhaps??? and make the font on "tenor guitars" smaller. Finally..... (see what I mean???) Maybe say "Tenor guitar" instead of "Tenor guitars."
But the basic design of the numeral four w/ "is more" is fab.

Hello,
I just uploaded a Photo of my first tenor made from a1950's Silvertone Banjo neck under a new album titled "David Orr's Stuff" It's the only new photo in the last seven days. It's really prettier in person, The flash really glared. Sounds really good too, and the action is extremely low.

Hello Fellow TenorGuitarists:
I have created a design for a TeeShirt that utlilizes the "Four Is More" theme which someone has suggested using as a motto or slogan for TGR members. I have edited my contact info by adding the design to my profile's photo. The design can be printed in white on any dark - coloured TeeShirt without incurring too much cost. OK.  sounds good.  I'll look into that.  I was thinking of moving the four strings over so that they take the four middle spots.  Does that move matter much in the sound?  Should  leave them on the one side after removing the two bass strings?

Hi from, Mike. You might be better off with a Childs 1/2 size 6 string neck on a full size body? Like a neck from a used First Act. As they are shorter and thinner, Mike.

Tommy Emmanuel was presented with a custom Seagull a few years ago. He uses
it in the studio but it just doesn't hold up with his work schedule, and his
heavy handed playing style probably doesn't help either! :-)

True, if you're playing in my loungeroom or in an acoustically ideal
performance space. For most uses it's the pickup or mikes and placement, the
playing style that you adapt to the instrument, followed by what the guy on
the mixing desk does that'll do the most to shape your sound.

Get your secondhand tenor banjo neck and measure your scale length from nut
to bridge plus a smidge. We may have a gap at the heel or we may have to get
the router or saw out. We never said it was going to look pretty. ;-)

It's just your opinion, but is it really that humble? :-)

Interesting you should say "a Martin would survive better than a Seagull..." I
own one of each. My Martin gets babied much more then the Seagull, but I can't
really say that it is more robust or durable than the Seagull. I would imagine
my experience AND my habit of using the 'gull as more of a "beater" are typical.

And while I am here, let me chime in on two other subjects:

An experiment is only truly valid if you hold all variables constant, save one.
Thus:
If you have an expensive traditional-made guitar and a cheap Ovation copy, there
are probably hundreds, or at least dozens, of differences in the construction
and materials of them. It becomes impossible to know which is causing the
relatively poor tone. the lap-steel pair sounds like a better experimental
design.

On converting an electric to a tenor: I think if you put a short, tenor-scale
neck on an electric body, the scale length will be way off- it would never play
in tune up the neck. I like the capo suggestion the best, in that respect.

JMHO. (There you go, figure THAT one out...)
