Rave of the Week: "Do you love me like you say"
By KEN CAPOBIANCO
Terence Trent D'Arby arrived on the pop music scene in 1987 with a
heap of self-generated hype, which ultimately undermined him, but he
did indeed deliver with his sweet mix of R&B, pop and rock. He had a
swagger and pretty much prefigured the entire neo-soul movement.
Now he is barely recognized, a cruel fate for a major talent.
Thankfully, some of his most assured and thrilling work has been
collected on ''Do You Love Me Like You Say: The Very Best of
Terrence Trent D'Arby'' (Sony Legacy). A testament to his song craft
and beautiful voice, it includes a couple of live tracks - he's a
brilliant, vital performer - along with the obvious hits,
including ''Wishing Well'' and ''Sign Your Name.''
At 17 tracks, it's too short and misses some of his best latter-day
work, but this is essential listening. D'Arby, now named Sananda
Maitreya, is sorely missed, and this reminds you why.
