The Buffalo Woman
It was a time of hunger. Two young men, searching for game, saw a
beautiful young woman approaching from the horizon, her feet not
touching the ground. She was wrapped in a white buffalo skin and
carried something in her hands.

One young man recognized her as a holy person and thought good
thoughts, but the other saw only a beautiful young woman and thought
to do her harm. As she approached, he reached out to grab her, but
instead he became covered by a cloud. When the cloud left, the young
man was nothing but a skeleton.

The White Buffalo Calf Woman told the other young man to return to
his people to prepare for her coming. "Tell your people that it is a
good thing I am bringing. I am bringing a holy thing to your nation,
a message from the Buffalo People."

The young man returned. His people prepared for the holy thing which
would be coming by building a medicine lodge and making all things
ready. In four days the White Buffalo Calf Woman came to the people,
carrying a wrapped bundle and a bunch of sacred sage. She was made
welcome and honored by the people. Then she unwrapped the bundle and
showed them what she had brought--the Sacred Pipe. She told them
what each part represented: the red bowl representing the flesh and
blood of the buffalo people and all people, the wooden stem--all
green and growing things; the smoke --the sacred wind that carries
prayers. She showed them how to offer the Pipe to Earth and Sky and
the four Sacred Directions. She told them many mysteries.

"I am going to leave," she said, "but you will see me again." As she
walked toward the setting sun, she stopped and rolled on the Earth.
When she stood up she was a black buffalo. Then she went further and
rolled again. This time when she stood up she was a brown buffalo.
The third time she was a red buffalo. The fourth and final time, she
became a white buffalo calf and disappeared.

As soon as the White Buffalo Calf Woman had disappeared, herds of
buffalo appeared all around the camp. The people gave thanks with
the Sacred Pipe for all of the blessings they had received. As long
as they followed the lessons they had been taught--that all things
are connected as parts of the pipe--they lived happily and well.

Today's Story

Butch O'Hare
During the course of World War II, many people gained fame in one
way
or another. One man was Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot
assigned
to an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. One time his entire squadron
was assigned to fly a particular mission. After he was airborne, he
looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to
top off his fuel tank. Because of this, he would not have enough
fuel
to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader
told him to leave formation and return. As he was returning to the
mother ship, he could see a squadron of Japanese Zeroes heading
toward the fleet to attack. And with all the fighter planes gone,
the
fleet was almost defenseless. His was the only opportunity to
distract and divert them. Single-handedly, he dove into the
formation
of Japanese planes and attacked them. The American fighter planes
were rigged with cameras, so that as they flew and fought, pictures
were taken so pilots could learn more about the terrain, enemy
maneuvers, etc. Butch dove at them and shot until all his ammunition
was gone, then he would dive and try to clip off a wing or tail or
anything that would make the enemy planes unfit to fly. He did
anything he could to keep them from reaching the American ships.
Finally, the Japanese squadron took off in another direction, and
Butch O' Hare and his fighter, both badly shot up, limped back to
the
carrier. He told his story, but not until the film from the camera
on
his plane was developed, did they realize the extent he really went
to, to protect his fleet. He was recognized as a hero and given one
of the nation's highest military honors. And as you may know, O'Hare
Airport was named after him.


Prior to this time in Chicago, there was a man called Easy Eddie. He
was working for a man you've all heard about, Al Capone. Al Capone
wasn't famous for anything heroic, but he was notorious for the
murders he'd committed and the illegal thing's he'd done. Easy Eddie
was Al Capone's lawyer and he was very good. In fact, because of his
skill, he was able to keep Al Capone out of jail. To show his
appreciation, Al Capone paid him very well. He not only earned big
money, he would get extra things, like a residence that filled an
entire Chicago city block. The house was fenced, and he had live-in
help and all of the conveniences of the day. Easy Eddie had a son.
He
loved his son and gave him all the best things while he was growing
up; clothes, cars, and a good education. And, because he loved his
son he tried to teach him right from wrong. But one thing he
couldn't
give his son was a good name, and a good example. Easy Eddie decided
that this was much more important than all the riches he had given
him. So, he went to the authorities in order to rectify the wrong he
had done. In order to tell the truth, it meant he must testify
against Al Capone, and he knew that Al Capone would do his best to
have him killed. But he wanted most of all to try to be an example
and to do the best he could to give back to his son, a good name. So
he testified. Within the year, he was shot and killed on a lonely
street in Chicago. These sound like two unrelated stories, but Butch
O'Hare was Easy
Eddie's son.

A Late Bloomer A cactus stood all alone in the desert, wondering why
it was stuck in the middle of nowhere.

"I do nothing but stand here all day," it sighed. "What use am I?
I'm the ugliest plant in the desert. My spines are thick and
prickly, my leaves are rubbery and tough, my skin is thick and
bumpy. I can't offer shade or juicy fruit to any passing traveler.
I don't see that I'm any use at all."

All it did was stand in the sun day after day, growing taller and
fatter.
Its spines grew longer and its leaves tougher, and it swelled here
and there until it was lumpy and lopsided all over. It truly was
strange- looking.

"I wish I could do something useful," it sighed.

By day hawks circled high overhead.

"What can I do with my life?" the cactus called. Whether they heard
or not, the hawks sailed away.

At night the moon floated into the sky and cast its pale glow on the
desert floor.

"What good can I do with my life?" the cactus called. The moon only
stared coldly as it mounted its course.

A lizard crawled by, leaving a little trail in the sand with its
tail.

"What worthy deed can I do?" the cactus called.

"You?" the lizard laughed, pausing a moment. "Worthy deed? Why,
you can't do anything! The hawks circle way overhead, tracing
delicate patterns for us all to admire. The moon hangs high like a
lantern at night, so we can see our ways home to our loved ones.
Even I, the lowly lizard, have something to do. I decorate the
sands with these beautiful brushstrokes as I pull my tail along.
Buy you? You do nothing but get uglier every day."

And so it went on, year after year. At last the cactus grew old,
and it knew its time was short.

"Oh, Lord," it cried out, "I've wondered so long, and I've tried so
hard.
Forgive me if I've failed to find something worthy to do. I fear
that now it's too late."

But just then the cactus felt a strange stirring and unfolding, and
it knew a surge of joy that erased all despair. At its very tip,
like a sudden crown, a glorious flower suddenly opened in bloom.

Never had the desert known such a blossom. Its fragrance perfumed
the air far and wide and brought happiness to all passing by. The
butterflies paused to admire its beauty, and that night even the
moon smiled when it rose to find such a treasure.

The cactus heard a voice.

"You have waited long," the Lord said. "The heart that seeks to do
good reflects My glory, and will always bring something worthwhile
to the world, something in which all can rejoice - even if for only
a moment."

Snowflake

Tumbled from a cloud
rolled over and over
and out of its nest,
floats to the earth,
in so much dark yet
illuminous.

Landed in a tree,
top of a hill,
in colorful dreams
of soaring,
slept into the morning,
until something broke the chill.

Snowflake, special
different from all the rest,
and when you love what your doing
that's when you'll do your best,
with God's help we can pass any test.

With just enough light to see
it listens to a distant sound,
and caught a glimpse of the ocean
before the sun helped it to the ground.

Now a drop, it stumbled
into a swift moving stream
like a toboggan, flume, roller coaster,
such an ultimate adventure,
one wild and crazy screaming stream.

Snowflake, special different
from all of the rest
and when you love what you're doing
that's when you'll do your best,
then let God take care of the rest.

It slowly flows into a river,
wide ,slow, bold and free,
heard so much about the ocean,
learned so much, met so many,
there's so much love in the sea.
