The Football Player
Your web browser is NOT capable of playing Music
Bob Richards, the former pole-vault champion, shares a moving story
about a skinny young boy who loved football with all his heart.
Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But
being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. At
all
the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench and hardly ever
played.
This teenager lived alone with his father, and the two of them had a
very special relationship. Even though the son was always on the
bench,
his father was always in the stands cheering.

He never missed a game. This young man was still the smallest of the
class when he entered high school. His father continued to encourage
him
but also made it very clear that he did not have to play football if
he
didn't want to. But the young man loved football and decided to hang
in
there. He was determined to try his best at every practice, and
perhaps
he'd get to play when he became a senior. All through high school he
never missed a practice nor a game but remained a bench-warmer all
four
years.

His faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of
encouragement for him. When the young man went to college, he decided
to try out for the football team as a "walk-on." Everyone was sure he
could never make the cut, but he did. The coach admitted that he kept
him on the roster because he always puts his heart and soul to every
practice, and at the same time, provided the other members with the
spirit and hustle they badly needed.

The news that he had survived the cut thrilled him so much that he
rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared
his
excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games.
This persistent young athlete never missed practice during his four
years at college, but he never got to play in a game. It was the end
of
his senior football season, and as he trotted onto the practice field
shortly before the big playoff game, the coach met him with a
telegram.
The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent.
Swallowing
hard, he mumbled to the coach, "My father died this morning. Is it
all
right if I miss practice today?"

The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, "Take the
rest of the week off, son. And don't even plan to come back to the
game
on Saturday." Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In
the
third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, a silent young
man
quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football
gear.
As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were
astounded
to see their faithful teammate back so soon.

"Coach, please let me play. I've just got to play today," said the
young
man.
The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his
worst player in this close playoff game. But the young man persisted,
and finally feeling sorry for the kid, the coach gave in. "All
right,"
he said. "You can go in."

Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could
not believe their eyes. This little unknown, who had never played
before
was doing everything right. The opposing team could not stop him. He
ran, he passed, blocked, and tackled like a star. His team began to
triumph.

The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid
intercepted a pass and ran all the way for the winning touchdown. The
fans broke loose. His teammates hoisted him onto their shoulders.
Such
cheering you never heard.

Finally, after the stands had emptied and the team had showered and
left the locker room, the coach noticed that this young man was
sitting
quietly in the corner all alone The coach came to him and said, "Kid,
I
can't believe it. You were fantastic! Tell me what got into you? How
did
you do it?" He looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said,
"Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?"
The young man swallowed hard and forced a smile, "Dad came to all my
games, but today was the first time
he could see me play, and I wanted to show him I could do it!"

Like the athlete's father, God is always there cheering for us. Our
loving God is always reminding us to go on, offering us a
hand, knowing what is best, giving us what we need and not simply
what
we want. God has never missed a single game. What a joy to know that
life is meaningful if lived for the Highest. Live for the Creator,
who
is watching us in the game of life!

Today's Story

Heaven's Grocery Store
I was walking down life's highway a long time ago.
One day I saw a sign that read, "Heaven's Grocery Store".
As I got a little closer the door came open wide,
and when I came to myself I was standing inside.
I saw a host of Angels, they were standing everywhere.
One handed me a blanket and said, "My Child shop with care".
Everything a Christian needs is in that grocery store,
and all you can't carry, come back the next day for more.
First, I got some Patience, Love was in the same row.
Further down was Understanding, needed everywhere you go.
I got a box or two of Wisdom, a bag or two of Faith,
I just couldn't miss the Holy Ghost, it was all over the place.
I stopped to get some Strength and Courage to help me run this race,
but then my blanket was getting full, and I remembered I needed
Grace.
I didn't forget Salvation, which like the others was free,
so I tried to get enough of that to save both you and me.
Then I started to the counter to pay my grocery bill,
for I thought I had everything to do my master's will.
As I went up the aisle, I saw Prayer and had to put it in,
for I knew when I stepped outside, I would run right into sin.
Peace and Joy were plentiful, they were on the last shelf.
Song and Praises were hanging near, so I just helped myself.
Then I said to the Angel, "How much do I owe"?
The Angel smiled and said, "Just take them everywhere you go."
Again, I politely asked "How much do I really owe?"
The Angel smiled again and said, "My Child, Jesus Paid Your Bill
A Long Time Ago."

The Color of Friendship
Once upon a time
the colors of the world started to quarrel.
All claimed that they were the best;
the most important,
the most useful,
the favorite
GREEN said:
"Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope.
I was
chosen for grass, trees and leaves. Without me, all animals would
die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the
majority."
BLUE interrupted:
"You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It
is the
water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the
deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my
peace, you would all be nothing."
YELLOW chuckled:
"You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into
the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are
yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to
smile. Without me there would be no fun."
ORANGE started next to blow her trumpet:
"I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am
precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most
important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and
papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at
sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another
thought to any of you."
RED could stand it no longer, he shouted out:
"I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I bring
fire into
the blood. I am willing to fight for a cause. I am the color of
danger and of
bravery. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am
the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and
the poppy."
PURPLE rose up to his full height:
He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of
royalty and power. Kings, cheifs, and bishops have always chosen me,
for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me!
They listen and obey."
Finally INDIGO spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with
just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence.
You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I
represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need
me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."
So the colors went on boasting,
each convinced of his or her own superiority.
Their quarreling became louder and louder.
Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening.
Thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly.
The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for
comfort.
In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak: "You foolish colors,
fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest.
Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose,
unique and different?
Join hands with one another and come to me."

Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands.


The rain continued:
"From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across
the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder
that you can all live in peace.
The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow."

And so, whenever a good rain washes the world,
and a Rainbow appears in the sky,
let us remember to appreciate one another.

How I can know when I love someone
It's the way I can keep staring at you endlessly
I can always remember you when I am working
I can always smile when I am lonely and need to rest my head
I can always think of you even in the darkest hour
I can easily place my hand on your picture
Just as if I am touching your physical face
When I hear a silly word about you
It doesn't really sound the way they feel about it
Even when you are failing I still keep hoping
When the night moon shines brightly
I stare upward hoping that you are also gazing at it
When the stream runs by
I throw a piece of stick into it thinking that it will come to you
When the wind blows heavily I breath into it
Thinking that it will get to your nostril
When I watch a TV program I also believe it is on your TV screen
When each time the phone rings
I grab it with great expectation believing it is you calling me
Each blessed day brings new hope
Then I realize that we are born to love
We are only here to be loved and to love
That the greatest commandment from Jehovah Lord God is to love one
another
