One Minute Can Change A Life

He almost killed somebody, but one minute changed his life. The
beautiful story comes from Sherman Rogers' old book, FOREMEN: LEADERS
OR DRIVERS? In his true-life story, Rogers illustrates the importance
of effective relationships.

During his college years, Rogers spent a summer in an Idaho logging
camp. When the superintendent had to leave for a few days, he put
Rogers in charge.

"What if the men refuse to follow my orders?" Rogers asked. He
thought of Tony, an immigrant worker who grumbled and growled all
day, giving the other men a hard time.

"Fire them," the superintendent said. Then, as if reading Rogers'
mind, he added, "I suppose you think you are going to fire Tony if
you get the chance. I'd feel badly about that. I have been logging
for 40 years. Tony is the most reliable worker I've ever had. I know
he is a grouch and that he hates everybody and everything. But he
comes in first and leaves last. There has not been an accident for
eight years on the hill where he works."

Rogers took over the next day. He went to Tony and spoke to
him. "Tony, do you know I'm in charge here today?" Tony grunted. "I
was going to fire you the first time we tangled, but I want you to
know I'm not," he told Tony, adding what the superintendent had said.

When he finished, Tony dropped the shovelful of sand he had held and
tears streamed down his face. "Why he no tell me dat eight years
ago?"

That day Tony worked harder than ever before -- and he smiled! He
later said to Rogers, "I told Maria you first foreman in deese
country who ever say, 'Good work, Tony,' and it make Maria feel like
Christmas."

Rogers went back to school after that summer. Twelve years later he
met Tony again. He was superintendent for railroad construction for
one of the largest logging companies in the West. Rogers asked him
how he came to California and happened to have such success.

Tony replied, "If it not be for the one minute you talk to me back in
Idaho, I keel somebody someday. One minute, she change my whole
life."

Effective managers know the importance of taking a moment to point
out what a worker is doing well. But what a difference a minute of af
firmation can make in any relationship!

One minute. Have you got one minute to thank someone? A minute to
tell someone what you sincerely like or appreciate about her? A mi
nute to elaborate on something he did well? One minute. It can make a
difference for a lifetime.

Today's Story

Saying Goodbye To Summer

How can it be almost over when it seems like it's barely begun? As
the old saying goes: 'All good things must come to an end' and summer
is no exception. Our summer calendars had been filled with graduation
parties, baseball games, backyard barbecues and pool parties. These
joy filled events are beginning to wind down and soon we'll be
filling our September calendars with dates for chaperoning school
activities and adhering to the more rigid schedules that fall brings
our way.

These dog days of summer are finding me in a bit of a melancholy
mood. As the heat continues to be an issue my heart happens to be
melting with memories of summer's sweet song of yesterday.

On a faraway street corner, many , many years ago stood a lemonade
stand that held the promise of making lots of money for two
enthusiastic best friends. This memory is brought alive as I see
today's mommies spending no less than ten bucks on ingredients so
their little entrepreneurs can shout ~ ' LEMONADE - 10 CENTS A
GLASS!!'

The smell of backyard barbecues always bring to mind the memory of my
dad attempting to grill hamburgers. We'd jump for joy even though we
knew the hamburgers and hot dogs would be so well past done they'd be
well on their way to burnt. Now it is my dear hubby who likes to play
weekend chef. It is his turn to burn the burgers while leaving a
happy memory of family time for our kids to recall in years to come.

Many years from now the smell of freshly cut grass will bring the
same aroma therapy of youth to our children as it does to us, their
aging parents. Back in the summer of our youth every boy's bike had a
baseball mitt hanging from the handle bars. On hot muggy nights moms
and dads visited with neighbors on front porches while kids shared in
the joy of catching lightening bugs in Mason jars. These were the
best of times. We never worried about things like the ozone. These
days little ones almost need the protection of SPF 60 just to play
outside.

I remember going to the drive in as a family. What an adventure!
Looking back, I wonder how my brothers, sister and I all fit in the
back of my father's old Edsel, but we did.

These days of summer are definitely different from the days that I
remember. But, there are similarities - like the laughter of children
enjoying the summers of their childhoods that can spark in our
youthful hearts, our own mid summer's memories. Good bye summer till
next time, when the beautiful rays of sunshine will once again warm
our happy hearts while leading us to the bliss of new beginnings.

Everything is Connected

In the middle of all the ruckus in our home this past week, I
discovered a moment of great inspiration. Then again, that's where
great inspiration is born.

We are getting new carpeting for our upstairs. That in itself has
turned my world upside down. But the bigger picture here is how one
thing always leads to another.

When we decided to get new carpeting, we couldn't just get new
carpeting.

"We have to paint the ceilings," my wife told me.

"Won't the new carpeting like looking at our old ceilings?" I asked.

"Not the point," she replied. "I don't want to be painting the
ceilings after we put the carpeting in."

"Okay with me. Put the new carpeting in and we won't paint the
ceilings," I said.

It wasn't the right answer.

She walked away from my logic as she shook her head in disbelief.

"Okay, we'll paint the ceilings," I conceded.

"Well, we will need to paint the trim and the walls, too," she said
as she stood in the doorway.

"I know, the carpeting, right?" I said.

"Yes, but the trim will look old next to the new ceiling."

I sighed.

"Okay, I'll paint the trim, too."

"Well, you'll need to sand them first."

"Because of the carpeting?"

"No, it's the right thing to do."

"The right thing to do was leave the old carpeting," I mumbled.

"Oh, by the way. We also should paint the walls," she added. And
without hesitating so as to avoid unnecessary comments from me, she
continued. "The walls in the back room have cracks that need to be
repaired."

Everything is connected.

Like fixing the cracks in the plaster.

I really wasn't sure if I remembered how to do it. Since I was
already up to my neck in these projects I thought I better ask
someone.

Standing in the aisle of the local hardware store I looked around to
find a clerk.

Now, if I were roaming around the store with nothing in mind, there
would be five clerks asking, "May I help you find something?"

But never when I really need one.

I grabbed what looked like the item I needed and began reading the
label. Is it me getting older or do they make the print so small any
more you need a telescope to see it?

"Do you know what you are doing?" I heard a man ask me.

Looking up I expected to see a clerk standing there. It was an
elderly man.

"Oh, a man of great wisdom!" I said. "How'd you know I needed help?"

"The can's upside down," he said.

"That's okay, I couldn't read it anyway," I said laughing.

I proceeded to explain my challenge.

"Make the cracks bigger," He said.

"Why? I'm trying to cover them up," I said.

Then was my moment of inspiration.

"In order to fix a small problem you need to see it bigger," he said.

I had a look of confusion.

"That small crack most likely is a part of a bigger problem. By
exposing the crack the filler will smooth it over more evenly. By
making it a little wider the filler can get into the crack, you can
sand it and paint it and never see it again. People who putty over a
tiny crack will only get to see it again," he said.

Just like life. Sometimes little problems are the beginning of bigger
ones. Sometimes taking a broader look at it will help to resolve the
problem once and for all so that it never returns.

Handling the small crack in the foundation of your well being will
help to prevent that foundation from crumbling.

Sometimes, "In order to fix a small problem you need to see it
bigger."

Everything is connected.

Like you and me!

Sunny Today
He walks along the narrow path that leads down to the lake,
To find his old secluded place where he can meditate.
When he is feeling lonely or when he is feeling down,
He knows that it is quiet there and no one is around.

So many times he's made this trip when he gets in this mood,
It is the only place he knows to find some solitude.
It matters not what time of day or what time of the year,
Never has he ever seen another person here.

Maybe it's too hidden or the path may be too slim,
He sometimes thinks the only one who knows of it is him.
People are around the lake: He sees them from this place,
But maybe no one knows about his special little space.

There was a time when someone else would share these special times,
Sitting on the bank with him while shaded by the pines.
This had been their special place, a special hide away,
Where they would bring a picnic lunch and just enjoy the day.

They would sit for hours and enjoy the summer breeze,
And they would come in autumn to enjoy the changing leaves.
Just some quiet time alone to talk and laugh for hours,
This is how they took the time, to stop and smell the flowers.

Now he sits here all alone and thinks about the past,
Realizing life goes on and things in life don't last.
All is temporary as we live from day to day,
What we held so dear in life may soon just fade away.

He thinks about the headlines that are spread across the news,
He thinks of all the things we have and all that we could lose.
He thinks of all the tension in the lives of those today,
But then he thinks, it's nothing new it's always been that way.

Every generation always had a cross to bear,
Even in this county's past a threat was always there.
But some how this seems different in a world of vast turmoil,
Maybe it's because the threat is here on our own soil.

Maybe war can be averted maybe peace will come,
Maybe there's an answer satisfying everyone.
If only people took the time to find a quiet place,
And look into each others eyes and just speak face to face.

Why can't people learn to live in peaceful harmony?
But he thinks about the past and that will never be.
Always there's a conflict that will lead into a fight,
And always in a conflict both sides think that they are right.

The only problem with a battle once it does begin,
Everybody loses even though one side may win.
Even though there is a victory one of them may claim,
Both sides suffer in the end and both sides suffer pain.

He throws a pebble in the lake and ripples circle out,
He is confused by many things but knows without a doubt,
Life is never constant it brings happiness and sorrow,
Maybe that is why it says "take no thought of tomorrow"

He thinks of all his yesterdays with those he chose to love,
Some have left and gone away while some have gone above.
Some have left sweet memories that will linger on for years,
While others left the memories that will always bring on tears.

He turns to leave his special place: His meditating done,
Down his special little path before the setting sun.
The sun shines brightly through the trees while shadows rearrange,
He realizes like the shadows, life will always change.

Nothing we can ever do can change things in the past,
And the plans we have tomorrow surely will not last.
Life is always changing and it's always been that way,
But he looks up and feels the warmth;
The sun shines bright TODAY.
~ James A. Kisner ~
