via email and for them to send me some photos of their work. I will give
$10-$20 for mail/photo costs and for the hell of it (incentive!) Please
pass the word along and email me privately. Thank you for reading.

of re-location.. but i know the website is at www.nwmedia.com
Northwestern is how we refer to this place and they do excellent work.

They've done plenty of good work for many of the musicians up here in the

regardless of region of residency.

Here in Philthydelphia the scene has dwindled to nothing although the
public talks longingly of the days when music wasn't all Rap based or
everybody was trying to sound like the latest alterna/pop punk MTV band.
Everybody talks about the old crew and how there's nothing like that
anymore, but continue to listen to (and buy) the new stuff. Some
friends of ours recently returned from a coast-to-coast tour and said
that nationwide the clubs/venues that were DJ's 2 nights and live music
3-4 nights a week have done a full 180. If you're not DJ
scratch-n-sniff, you're out on your ear. I don't blame the clubowners
who are in the business to make $$. I'm confused by all the comments
of those longing for real rock-n-roll yet not supporting artists that do
just that. Opinions?

Hey you guys!
I recently signed up at HITSTER 2000 and it's amazing! I'm not kidding. I
don't normally try these things out, but this one really works and has
created A LOT of traffic to our mp3.com page! A couple of my friends did it
and told me how great it was so I decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad
I did! It only take 2-3 minutes to sign up for it and it's definitely WORTH
it! Trust me on this one, it is awesome.
Go to http://hitster.hypermart.net/?ref=1046
If you do exactly what it says to do (which isn't much!) you'll get
hundreds, if not thousands of extra hits to your site!!! Check it out,
you'll thank me! :o)

Hey, y'all -
After countless computer crashes & subsequent loss of my
entire mailing list, industry contacts, recipes, & important
links to local bailbondsmen, I'm revving up again. This is
going out to the emails I was able to recover, new contacts,
old friends, etc. If you want to be removed just say "purty
please!"...if you've asked to be removed in the past &
you're getting this anyway due to the aforementioned compu-
SNAFU, please accept my apologies…hopefully the announcement
process will be streamlined, now that my brother Todd has
set up this handy-dandy Mailing List Service.
UPCOMING GIGS:
Local honkytonk heroes ELENA SKYE & THE DEMOLITION STRING
BAND are holding down a regular Thursday night residency at
Manitoba's & have kindly asked me to open for them at one of
the dates:
Thursday, December 28th
MANITOBA'S
99 Avenue B (between 6 & 7th)
(212) 982-2511
10pm SHARP!
Be sure to ask friendly barkeep George Gilmore to mix you
something nice, but don't let him stir it with his thumb.
Appearing with me, as always, will be my great band, The
Nitro Express, featuring the sublime talents of Gentleman
JON GRABOFF (Beat Rodeo) on pedal steel; Dangerous DANNY
WEISS (Skyline, Silk City) on lead geetar; after months on
the road with 34 Satellite, welcome back drummer Magnanimous
MARK BOQUIST; & introducing a new addition, former WKCR
"Moonshine Show" DJ, Cousin JOSH REED (Blind Pharaohs) on
the bass guitar. He's a good pal, a real bluegrasser at
heart, & can put down the Maker's Mark with the best (or
worst) of 'em. Ask him about his "big pooty-drawer pants,"
maybe he'll bring them next gig…
Look for more shows coming up in the coming months: an
appearance at Elena's monthly Twangbang series, the fabulous
Rodeo Bar, & elsewhere, new recordings, perhaps even more
BBQ joint bluegrass gigs with the Blackwater Shoals…
OUT WITH THE OLD:
2000 was a year of incredible highs & lows: among them
dinner with Keith Richards, major lawsuits against my
landlord (you figure out which was which)...but without a
doubt one of the biggest highlights was the TRIBUTE TO THE
BYRDS/GENE CLARK show that I put on at NYC's BOTTOM LINE in
May, featuring the incredible talents of the great JOHN
JORGENSON, THE GRIPWEEDS, ELENA SKYE & BOO REINERS, MARY LEE
KORTES, fiddlin' KENNY KOSEK, The Smithereens' DENNIS DIKEN,
GEORGE USHER, DAVE SCHRAMM, ANDY BURTON, MIKE LEVINE, PETER
STUART, JON GRABOFF, DANNY WEISS, BARRY MITTERHOFF, ANNE
BENKOVITZ, MARK HELM, BEKI BRINDLE & RALPH SCALA. Plans are
in effect to make this an annual event, perhaps next time
focussing on Clarence White...? Stay tuned!
Perhaps even more amazing was the invitation in September to
play the legendary BIRCHMERE in Alexandria, VA, at a similar
Byrds/Gene tribute show, this time organized by Mark Helm, &
sponsored by Friends of the Earth. I had the incredible
honor of sharing a half-hour bluegrass set in the middle of
the program with singer/guitarist-founding member of the
Seldom Scene, DR. JOHN STARLING, & the unenviable task of
having to sing John Duffey's tenor & high baritone parts, as
well as holding down the banjo chair. Along for the ride
were mandolinist extraordinaire & all-around good egg AKIRA
OTSUKA, of Japan's Bluegrass 45 (playing Duffey's old
Gibson!), Honkytonk Confidential's GEFF KING on upright
bass, mighty mite MATT LEVINE of Cliff Waldron & New Shades
of Grass playing mind-boggling dobro, as well as the
ubiquitous ELENA SKYE & BOO REINERS, helping provide the
backbone of the rhythm section. An amazing experience & we
got a standing ovation! Other performers at the 4 hour show
included good pals like BILL LLOYD, THE GRAVEROBBERS, LAST
TRAIN HOME (who were the house band), and the great RICK
CLARK, to name a few.
All these events (as well as similar concerts in Nashville,
Austin, etc.) were arranged on heels of the release of the
Full Circle: A Tribute To Gene Clark CD that came out in
April 2000 on Not Lame Recordings, which includes tracks by
many of the previously mentioned performers, including yours
truly (leading the late GHOST ROCKETS).
IN WITH THE NEW:
I have been invited by Niall Hood of Dren Records to
contribute a track to the Tribute to Michael Nesmith CD,
which is due for release sometime in the spring. Since the
banjo-fried cut of "With Care From Someone" on Full Circle
was so well received, we'll be cutting Papa Nez's "You Told
Me" (from the Monkees' Headquarters Lp) at the Gripweeds'
great House of Vibes studio in Highland Park, NJ.
Friends who lamented my not being cast in the VH1 Monkees
movie will be glad to hear that the other NYC casting-call
washout, my pallie CARL ZERN (see picture), will be playing
guitar on the track.
Also contributing trackage will be JOHN JORGENSON, LAST
TRAIN HOME, SCOTT McKNIGHT, FROG HOLLER, TWO-FISTED TALES,
DIXIE CANNONBALLS, & Sid Griffin's most excellent new band,
WESTERN ELECTRIC, among many others.
My brother is constructing a website for me, which hopefully
will be up at the beginning of 2001, & will feature all the
usual nonsense, photos from some of the aforementioned
shows, new recipes, gear tips, Links from Perdition, & many
other surprises besides.
Currently working on articles for TWANGZINE about some
Buckaroos Lps I recently acquired, not to mention a new
release from former Buck Owens' bassplayer DOYLE HOLLY,
which features the surviving members of the "classic"
Buckaroos lineup, & some CD reissues of his 70's solo albums
on Barnaby Records. Also coming up: more voice over work
for DISTANT CORNERS' Wish You Were Here web cartoons, a new
location for SPATULA RANCH STUDIOS, some recently discovered
old Ghost Rockets swag for sale, that potato salad recipe I
been a-braggin' on, & who knows what else? So please stay
tuned.
Hope y'all have a great Holiday season, & hope to see you at
Manitoba's on December 28th!
Love & bottles,
~ Budrocket

Regarding your music scene question...
I've been around the Toronto Canada scene for a while and it's the same
deal, although maybe on a smaller scale than some big US cities. NOTE
Toronto is a much bigger city than Seatle.
Bands today think they deserve to make it, or that they are actually
important outside of the music scene... they have a slightly differnet
attitude than bands that were just in it for the fun of jamming and writing.
Think of what makes some of the old 60's, 70's and 80's bands still
appealing today. They may still sing about the same topics as todays bands
but the overall attutude is not the same. It was probabbly easier for them
to stay focused on the music, they didn't have as much TV, or video games,
etc, to get in their way.
We are in a period of history where there is a lot of visual and audiable
noise pollution, i mean the hiways are just fucking jammed with cars,
getting to rehearsals can drive you nuts. Dont' think that this is not
reflected in the music.
What will make or break a band is if they either use this to their
advantage, or don't let it bother them at all. Which is harder said than
done. And keep in mind that attitude also affects work ethics. If you
expect a hand out from the music buss, you are less likely to rehearse as
hard, and you will suck.
Also most live clubs have exponentially inferior sound men and sound
systems, so even a good band can be butchered at the board. It was easier
to get good live sound in the 60's and 70's when there weren't so many
effects for the sound guy to kill your sound with.
The music scene in T.O. is as crap as anywhere else for the most part. I
mean how many new Canadian bands do you hear that are any good? Listen to
the shit the majors push out in the US, this is the best of the best.
Bottom line is most bands don't have what it takes, as in the whole package,
most of them will break up in a year, which can be obvious when a record
company meets with them, the next step is "we'll wait and see", 99% of the
time the band falls apart, and record company is left looking for another
act.
That's why.

This is an auto-response to your message sent to:
eda-info@...
Hello there :-)
Thanks for expressing an interest in the emailing list for Jewel.
First, some basic Questions & Answers about the Jewel mailing list ("how to
subscribe" information follows the Q&A ):
1) Is Jewel on the list?
No she is not. However we do have some members of Jewel's management team
who read the list, and one in particular who posts a few times each month,
often with late breaking news & information.
2) Does the list cost anything to subscribe to?
No, it's free as can be :-)
3) What does EDA mean? (as in eda-info@...)
EDA stands for EveryDay Angel. The term is from a lyric in Jewel's song
"I'm Sensitive", which was on her first CD, Pieces Of You. Jewel herself
first called the members of this list her "everyday angels" as a term of
endearment in recognition of the support they had given her in the very
early years, long before the mainstream music listeners had even heard of
her. The name has stuck, and we now tend to use the acronym EDA more than
EveryDay Angels. (It's easier saying "hey EDAs" rather than "hey Jewel list
members" and/or "hey everyday angels" :)
4) How do I become an EDA/list member?
The list comes in three versions: loose mail, digest and the low volume
Jewel-news (news only).
*****************
** loose mail **
*****************
How to subscribe information is a few screens below.
This is the lists' normal format, where a subscriber receives each post to
the list shortly after the posts' author sends it on. This can result in
anywhere from 15 to 60 emails a day, sometimes more if Jewel is actively
touring, appearing on television or if there's been a recent release of a
song, video or book etc. It's a quite active list, with much of it about
Jewel, much of it not about Jewel, but also about the list members (as a
whole) themselves. This is due to some quite fun gatherings we've had at
Jewel shows and some just for the heck of it (Jewel was nowhere near the
place). As a result, the list has a rather tight knit core at times.
Perhaps you will see once you join up :)
Please note that if the thought of 15 to 60 daily emails tends to scare you
off, read the part below on "Jewel-news", a version of this list that has
5 to 15 emails a WEEK on the average, and is all news about Jewel, with
SOME but not many posts about list member gatherings/get-togethers at Jewel
shows etc. (more commonly known as "EDA gatherings")
************
** digest **
************
How to subscribe information is a little bit below.
Simply, it's the exact same emails you get on the loose mail version, but
rather than getting 15 to 60 individual emails, you get 1 to 3 daily
digests (more if loose mail had a particularly active day), where each
digest contains roughly 15 to 20 emails (in the order the loose mail
subscriber got them). You can see a sample Jewel-digest at:
http://www.quackquack.net/jewel/digest.txt
***********
** news **
***********
How to subscribe information is a little bit below.
In a nutshell, this version generally consists only of posts from the loose
mail version that are about Jewel or list member events in a *news* manner.
There is no discussion of Jewel on this version, you'll just get emails
announcing tour dates, TV appearances (including repeats), webcasts,
magazine appearances, reviews etc. You CAN also post to the regular/loose
mail list when subscribed to Jewel-news. This news version has from 5 to 15
emails a WEEK on the average.
Please note, a VERY popular way to subscribe is to subscribe to BOTH the
digest and the news version. You'll get 2 to 6 emails a day at the average,
the NEWS posts stand out as they are individual emails, and you can read
the digests at your leisure but still keep up with the "news".
Below is separate information on how to subscribe to one or more of the
three versions.
IMPORTANT: at the end of this all this is information that is common to ALL
THREE subscription processes, be sure to read that too! It's titled
"Confirming your subscription to a Jewel mailing list". It's important that
you understand the confirmation process, otherwise your subscription may
not work/go through.
**************************************************************
* Subscribing to the main/loose mail Jewel mailing list: *
**************************************************************
This list is the version with 15 to 60 emails a day. To subscribe, send an
email to:
jewel-request@...
and put ONLY the word
subscribe
in the BODY of the email. What you put in the SUBJECT of the email does not
make a difference. (Please note, that a very common typing error is
misspelling subscribe (usually as suscribe....missing the first
"b")....make sure you get it right :-)
***************************************************
* Subscribing to the Jewel-digest mailing list: *
***************************************************
This list is the one with 1 to 3 large emails a day (each has about 15 to
20 list emails inside of it). To subscribe, send an email to:
jewel-digest-request@...
and put ONLY the word
subscribe
in the BODY of the email. What you put in the SUBJECT of the email does not
make a difference. (Please note, that a very common typing error is
misspelling subscribe (usually as suscribe....missing the first
"b")....make sure you get it right :-)
Again, if you choose digest over loose mail, please remember, I also highly
recommend Jewel-news as a supplement. By adding Jewel-news to your digest
subscription, you won't miss anything "big" if you fall behind in reading
the digests, as the news posts are separate and "stick out". To subscribe
to both, you would have to send in a subscription request for each version
you wish to subscribe to.
**************************************************
* Subscribing to the Jewel-news mailing list: *
**************************************************
This list is the one with on the average of 5 to 15 emails a week. To
subscribe, send an email to:
jewel-news-request@...
and put ONLY the word
subscribe
in the BODY of the email. What you put in the SUBJECT of the email does not
make a difference. (Please note, that a very common typing error is
misspelling subscribe (usually as suscribe....missing the first
"b")....make sure you get it right :-)
!!! IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ !!!
************************************************************
* Confirming your subscription to a Jewel mailing list: *
************************************************************
Just sending in a subscribe request to an address above does not complete
your subscription. You have to *confirm* your desire to subscribe. What
will happen is that the software that runs the mailing list will send you
TWO emails as soon as it receives a proper request to subscribe. If you do
something wrong, it will send you a message telling you that you did
something wrong and who to contact (me) if you need help.
One of these two emails you will receive will be from majordomo@...
and will just tell you that majordomo@... received your request and a
confirmation-type email will arrive shortly to you also. This second email
will be from:
confirm@...
and is VERY important in completing your subscription. In the subject and
the body of this email will be a code/key that will be similar in format
but with DIFFERENT numbers and letters to:
CCDF955-3808CB5
Your code/key WILL be different!!
All you have to do to finish your subscription process is send that key
back to confirm@... either in the BODY of your email or the SUBJECT or
both. With most email systems all you have to do is simply reply, as most
automatically put the existing subject of the email you received into the
subject of the email you are sending. (In other words, just send that
code/keyword to confirm@...)
If you do all of this right, you'll be in. If not, you'll get that email I
mentioned that will tell you again how to do it and who to contact in case
you need help.
One final note, when your subscription is completed you'll get either a
"Welcome to Jewel" email, "Welcome to Jewel-digest" or "Welcome to
Jewel-news" depending on the version(s) you subscribed to. It is something
you should SAVE. It shows you how to unsubscribe if you ever should you
desire to. Although it IS outdated, It also contains historical,
biographical and musical information about Jewel, some web site addresses,
and the web address of a very informational site for THIS mailing list. I
recommend you check out this site for the list. It explains a lot of basic
stuff about Jewel, the list itself, "do's and don'ts", certain list
members and more. Its' address is:
http://www.quackquack.net/jewel
Please note, as is the case with any mailing list, if you join up with
loose mail or digest, it is usually a good idea to "lurk" (read but don't
post) for a few days to a week, so that you can get a "feel" for the list :-)
Please join up and have fun with on the list....if you do, see you there
soon! :)
Sincerely,
Mike Connell
List manager/owner for the loose mail and digest versions,
co-managerfor Jewel-news
P.S. If you have further questions before subscribing, please feel free to
email me at ducksoup@...

Subject: Music scene.
Bottom line is most bands don't have what it takes, as in the whole package,
most of them will break up in a year, which can be obvious when a record
company meets with them, the next step is "we'll wait and see", 99% of the
time the band falls apart, and record company is left looking for another
act.
That's why.
Carl

New Works Staged Readings
A Double Feature of two experimental new plays!
This is a fun and casual event that will give you a sneak preview of these
innovative, finky plays that could be next year's hits, read by my favorite
Bay Area actors.
The Dark Night of Fatty Corpuscle:
the Little Death of a Good and Evil Man
Is it a Medieval Mystery Play? Is it a modern jazz poem? Is it a rerun of
Fat Albert? Does Fatty Corpuscle represent all of mankind? This new play by
Minneapolis playwright Gregory Sagar will keep you guessing.
LD50 (Lethal Dose Fifty Percent)
This play could be described as the perfect marriage between Samuel Beckett
and Dr. Suess. It is also a brutally honest examination of love, sex, and
death. This script springs from the mind of Armen Evrensel, a New York
playwright and filmmaker.

Subject: Music scene.
Los Angeles. There are something like 3000 bands, there's about 5 main scenes and innumerable struggling neighborhood bars. The 5 scenes are totally insular with their own bands, fashions, fads, and fear and disdain for all other scenes. Most of the bands are calculated hybrids or dumbass imitations. Worst of all, the all ages scene has been pretty much closed down. If a band draws 100 fans it's a big deal for all but the top couple clubs. Meanwhile raves are drawing thousands. And why not? The clubs have shit parking, they're in dangerous areas, at the over 21 places the vibe is totally drunken meat market. Most of the music and presentation (and fans?) seem kind of stupid and lost in some past scene's glory. Raves have great parking, friendlier drugs, a more female friendly vibe, amazing presentations, in a sense the music is almost incidental, providing a backgrou!
nd.
But the weirdest thing to me is the division into micro-niches that the whole music world has slipped into. I love Death Cab for Cutie and The White Stripes. They might like my band, Bikini Kill and Jejune did so why not, but their fans won't. In fact their fans will probably think I'm stupid because I have long hair, wear jeans, and like lead guitar. Same situation with System of a Down for metal, Buck Cherry for glam rock, Nebula for stoner rock, Newlydeads for goth glam, FYP for punk, blah blah, you get the picture, same for DJ Symphony, and for my fave female rapper Special T. These little niches with their fetish clothes, their totally conformist attitudes (celibate and sober at straight edge shows, drunk and horny at mod shows), the absolute similarity of the sounds of the bands. All i know is, that kind of hyper mental anal hierarchy building is everything rock and roll originally re!
beled against.
I think these niches dominate the marketing of bands, the policies of record companies and the ambitions and creations of musicians. And I think the really ironic thing is that even taken all together they are a minority. I think there's a big majority of millions out there who just like good music with smart lyrics and a great beat, but reaching them is almost impossible. The net is a flood, fuck, a tidal wave of bad music, what is it, 110,000 artists on MP3.com and growing daily? The radio stations, venues, and distribution channels are all clogged up with the latest strategies of imitation.
Conclusion: this may be the worst time for rock and roll bands ever, and it will probably get worse. But every generation some bona fide rock and roll musicians get born anyway, and we can't help doing it, and somehow the world finds ways to keep us doing it, and hopefully all of us who stay true will be found, because when you do your work with integrity, it has a gravity that somebody will someday notice. But in the meantime can I just say, goddamn I'm sick of making packages and keeping track of orders!!! : /~

i'm no expert, but regarding the toronto music scene... not everyone in this
city agrees with our friend carl. in fact, i think it's safe to say that
most people involved with toronto's music industry would say that it has
been at its strongest in the past few years. by "strongest" i mean it is
definitely more interesting than ever before; and it's largely due to the
fact that toronto has become the most multi-cultural city in the world.
now i can't really discuss or compare the current scene with the 60s-80s,
(since i was not yet alive for the most part,)
but i really don't think it's fair to generalize and accuse bands for not
being focused enough b/c they're too busy watching TV or playing video
games. (or worse, that highway congestion is a significant factor in the
downfall of music.)
we as canadians definitely have our share of bad music, but there are many
talented and hard-working musicians too. and one of the reasons why i love
toronto so much is the variety. not many cities offer such a eclectic array
of music, like toronto does. everything from folk music to the kickass rave
parties held across town -toronto has an outlet for it. that in itself, i
think is worth celebrating. call me naive or insanely positive, but i know
there are definite negative aspects to this and other music scenes around
the world. there may be a deterioration in music quality, but instead of
pointing fingers at the bad sound people or highway congestion in the city,
i think we need to embrace all the positive things and build from them.
otherwise, we as artists in any field would have no hope.
well, that's my first post and schpeal for now, i hope everyone's well.
take care, andrea...
