Well, last week I posted this to the deborah
conway list, the bluehouse list, and the waifs
list... it only just occured to me that some fans
in the West might like to hear how their buddies
are faring over here!

Yep, saw the Velvet Janes last night. For some
reason, at about 10:20pm I was wishing I was
tucked up on a comfy couch resting on big soft
pillows, instead of sitting on a church pew (!)
in a smoky pub... but 10:30 hit and the humour, fine tunes, great guitarin' and
inspiring lyrics
were all there from this down to earth duo from
the West, and they pretty much kept me and the
thirty or so gathered at the Cat and Fiddle in
Rozelle/Balmain, spell bound for over an hour.

It was a pretty sedate crowd all around I think,
but after selling out their stock of cds, next
time they're in town, the place should be jumping
with familiarity. An actor friend of theirs from
Perth rocked up half way through the gig and was
having a dance, but other than than, the punters
were very guarded in an inquisitive way.

"Shame on Me", "Bob and Beau", "My Boy" (I think)
and "Hey You" totally grabbed me. I cringed at
the mention of a Beatles cover (aka Marie Wilson
on that fateful night when she destroyed my faith
in "The Cat & Fiddle"... enough said) but what
followed was a sensational, almost unrecognisable
version of "Eleanor Rigby" - very impressive.

I especially liked the song about believing in
love... again, and again, and again, and again.

What Bernadette from Bluehouse can do with her
body (I'm talking sound effects here...), Mardi
can do with a harmonica - the nose tune, the no
hands tune, the possibilities are endless. I'm
just relieved she didn't try any tricks with her
kazoo which I spotted on the stage after the
show....... (don't go there....)

Make the most of seeing this band for an entry of $6... they'll be demanding
more than that before
long. And make sure you have a spare $25 in your
back pocket for the cd - I only heard half of it
after the show last night but it's a terrific production.... and you heard it
here first...
totally unconfirmed, and one of those throw
away lines to a fan after a show... BUT Mardi did
mention the possibility of a tour WITH Bluehouse
next year. Now that would be something.

Sarah G.
ps... after hearing the album 10-ish times between Sydney and Canberra over the
weekend, I
can't wait til these guys come back again. I was
a little disappointed that some of my favourite
tracks (as listed above)aren't on the album but I
guess that just augers well for the second
release doesn't it?!?!
