Wow - just received that last note about the show - I was just about to hit
send for the following message. Never can have too many reviews I guess!
(don't forget that the Velvet Janes are playing at Sydney Uni today from
5-6pm... I'll miss the other shows - out of town this weekend...)

One talented independent act's success is another's downfall. Such was the
attendance at the magical Harbourside Brasserie on Wednesday night - the
Velvet Janes' show scheduled at the same time as Penny Flannigan's much
publicised album launch at the Basement just one kilometre away...
Now Penny's great - by all accounts it's a great album and I wish her all
the best with it. But I'm glad I was sitting in the candle-lit intimacy of
the Brasserie at the base of the amazing coat hanger (yes, it was my first
time at this venue! And you can even get a park there!!!)
I arrived during the first verse of the first song, counted the crowd on
both hands and both feet, let out a great sigh, and settled at a table in
the middle of the room.
Cosy on stage under a sea of fairy lights, were Mardi and Rose, belting out
songs old and new with the same intensity as ever. Songs from the album
included Shame on Me and Somedays (both requests) and Girl Like Me. Bob
and Beau was dedicated to Beau, "wherever he may be", who passed away just
two days before.
Among the new songs were the amazing I Have a Boy, and Give Love a Chance,
as well as some newer beauties -the tear jerking Black Shiny Shoes, about
the day Rose was taken to the orphanage at age 3, and the hilarious
Masturbation song (apparently not autobiographical...)
Rose's vocals which combine gospel and pop, with Mardi's bluesy tone took
us all through chapter after chapter of their life stories, and left us all
wondering what the sequel might hold.

Not sure how last night's gig went in Newcastle but that town is full of
surfer boys and the charm that accompanies them for Surfest this week
(topless barmaids, wet teeshirt comps etc) so I hope there was a good
response!
Have a top weekend all...

Another absolutely brilliant and passionate performance in a rather
intimate atmosphere...ie only about 20 of us there!!
Nonetheless, Mardi and Rose gave us a show well worth coming out mid(very
busy)week for.
Fantastic rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water"...although it became a
bit of a joke towards the end...had most of us in stitches!!
Excellent stories of voyueristic crushes, homocidal doll stalkers, and sad
news of Beau's passing *tears*....beautiful song by Rose "Shiny Black
Shoes"...I think I fell in love with Rose at that moment...what a great
woman!!
Mardi's cheeky antics kept us giggling, wondering if she will ever
accidently swallow that darn harmonica!!!
(We hope not!!!)
Looking forward to tommorrow night at the Cat and Fiddle!!!!
Probably won't sleep tonight cos I'm so excited...whooo hooo!!
Then Go Girl on Sunday....gosh, a girl just can't have too much of the
Velvet Janes in her life!
Hope to see more of you there!!
Cheers
Donna :)
