That's much improved good job!
What a great site -- and tribute. I enjoyed seeing so many photos of Mr.
North that I've never seen before.

Conducted by Henry Brant as North had bad back pain from spending so many late
hours
working on this score to finish it in time. I know I want this release just from
listening to the
samples, the fanfare of the score is conducted with much more nobility than the
Goldsmith.

I am in the process of getting the sheet music "I Belong To You" from
the movie The Racers from the Margaret Herrick Library but to get it
you have to get a release from Alfred Publishing who hold the copyright
to the song.

Those guys, like North, were legends and knew how to compose music better than
some
of the films they were commisioned to score. There are very few now in Hollywood
that

Also I think Elliot Goldenthal is one of the better younger composers around

However I think Michael Giacchino shows the most promise, have you heard his
score for
the call of duty game and lost tv series?

I just watched Alexander again recently, and I think Jared Leto,
Colin Farrell, and Angelina Jolie were excellent in the movie.
Oliver Stone really captured the essence of Alexander¡¦s
personality, vision, feelings, and portrayals.
Colin did justice to Alexander by playing him not as a madman, not
as a saint. He played Alexander as a man with a thirst to destroy
the mythologies of man and to build histories and civilizations.
What madness, if there was any, came not from insanity, but from the
slowness of the world around him. The inability of those around him
to not see past the obstacles that man¡¦s vanity creates for
himself. To just see the world, men and women simply as they were in
his eyes. One. There is a shiver to Colin¡¦s eyes at moments that
denotes a quiet intelligence. This film is not so much about
monologues in-front of masses of men ¡V but rather the connection
the men felt for what he led them to accomplish. How he simply saw
the field as if blessed. They treated him as a legend in his own
time, yet could not blindly follow, nor did he want them to. Colin
conveys his wanderlust wonderfully. I just love this film
tremendously.

Heh, I'd love to get a hold of that, fortunately there's a DVD out of
the 80's film, that's the best I've got of this masterpiece score.
I'm trying to find a recording of the music from Arthur
Miller's "Death of a Salesman" - as composed by Alex North.
He first composed it for the Broadway play that premiered in 1949,
and then I believe the same music was transferred over to the 1951
film version starring Fredric March.
There is a much more well-known film, done for TV in the 80s with
John Malkovich & Dustin Hoffman - and North also composed a slightly
altered score for that version, as well, as far as the research I can
find tells me.
However, I cannot find a stand-alone recording of any of this music.
There are the films, of course (the earlier hasn't even be released
on VHS or DVD, it's so unpopular) - but I'm not interested in those
films per se, just the music.
Might anbody be able to help me out, direct me where to go, if it
exists at all?

Welcome.
Hmm. I don't see anything about North there. The only connection
between North and Virginia Woolf, as far as I know, is that he
composed the score for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

If you can find it, the SVC label is the best in terms of sound quality, but
even here, several cues from this extended score were derived from mono sources
and from magnetic tape. My understanding is that a complete stereo master no
longer exists from this great score by North. Nevertheless, the SVC version is
decent and certainly provides more music than the original Decca/MCA release. I
found my copy on ebay, and it does pop up there often. I have no idea how to
purchased it from a direct distributor. Perhaps someone in this club can
advise. There is a 3 cd version floating around, and it contains a little more
music than the SVC release, but, again, a great deal in mono. A good friend of
mine, and member, provided this for me, but I have no idea how or where he got
it The latter edition is most difficult to find, but I have seen it offered on
ebay as well, only not as often as the SVC version. Good luck.

Film Score Monthly's new limited edition CDs feature more classic TV spy scores
and a vintage dramatic score by a Hollywood master:
###
Silver Age Classics: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. VOL. 3, FEATURING THE GIRL FROM
U.N.C.L.E.
Film Score Monthly's two original-soundtrack CD sets of music from The Man From
U.N.C.L.E., the show that launched television's '60s spy craze, have been among
the fastest-selling, best-reviewed titles in the history of the label.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of U.N.C.L.E. this fall, FSM completes its
trilogy of U.N.C.L.E. albums with another 2-CD set of music from both the
original series and its 1966 spinoff, The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. The Girl From
U.N.C.L.E. featured some of the earliest dramatic work of composer Dave Grusin
-- who would go on to Oscar-winning film-music fame and commercial success as a
jazz artist -- as well as music by Man from U.N.C.L.E. favorite Richard Shores
and Munsters composer Jack Marshall.
Supplementing the jazzy Girl From U.N.C.L.E. scores are a wide variety of
previously unreleased selections from all four seasons of The Man From
U.N.C.L.E., by Jerry Goldsmith, Morton Stevens, Walter Scharf, Lalo Schifrin,
Gerald Fried, Robert Drasnin and Richard Shores. $24.95

###
Golden Age Classics: I'LL CRY TOMORROW
I'll Cry Tomorrow was a first-rate biopic starring Susan Hayward as Lillian
Roth, the one-time "Broadway's youngest star" whose life was derailed by
alcoholism and failed marriages. The score was among the first by the legendary
Alex North (A Streetcar Named Desire): a sensitive, yearning effort tinged with
melancholy jazz.
This premiere CD of the original soundtrack features North's complete score in
stereo along with the film's songs. (Although not a musical, the film featured
Hayward singing numerous numbers, arranged and conducted by Charles Henderson.)
A bonus section features additional and alternate score and songs. $19.95

I am also looking for the sheet music or excerpt from the score. It
appears it may reside in a film industry library in Los Angeles. It
appears that access is restricted to in-person visits and copying
there is cumbersome. On the other hand, if one were to go there the
particular cut we want is fairly short. If I am ever in LA rest
assured that I will visit the library and try to get a copy. But I
have no plans to go there and would not make the trip just to get
the music.
The Peggy Lee recording is probably authentic to the soundtrack as
from my research she sang it in the movie. In the meantime I will
keep searching and if I find it I will email you and hope you will
do the same. My interest is to arrange the tune for TTBB mens
chorus. I heard the song when it was new and it has been in my head
ever since.
