Yes I changed ISP's, and hence email too.
I'm just recently received The Shoes of the Fisherman FSM CD, and
it's a masterpiece. :)
Hello Nicholas,
I received your CDRs a long time ago.
I am sure that I mailed you when I got them months ago. Perhaps
something went wrong and you didn't receive my mail???
Anyway, thanks a lot!
By the way, there seems to be a problem with your E-mail-addresss.
All of my mails to your normal E-mail address today I always get
returned with the message "can't be delivered". So I thought it will
be best to post it here in this group.

I too am trying to find sheet music. It looks like that oscar
library seems to be the place. Did you have any luck?
The song is haunting and I would like to arrange it for a group I
sing with. TIA, Will

I don't know, but I envy that you've heard it at all.
Are there other yahoo.groups devoted to film composers: perhaps
Elmer Bernstein, Jerome Moross or Laurence Rosenthal? Even though
Alex North is supreme, there are others of interest.
Any info is appreciated.

I had a friend, a teacher, in Sao Paulo, Brazil who had his film
students insert the North score ( I gave him the Goldsmith CD) into
the film extant. The result was interesting, but not without
problems. the Fanfare was especially good over the opening visuals
and North's music "humanized" the Dawn of Man sequences lending
poignancy to the story. The space station music worked against the
typical Kubrick coldness. I understand Kubrick's dissatisfaction
with the music but can never excuse his treatment of Alex North.

I'm not sure what the point would be unless you're mixing it into
the film. :) But doing that would be very interesting.
One fantasy I have is constructing a completed North score for '2001'
using selected cues from 'Fisherman', 'Africa' and 'Dragonslayer' for
the second half of the film. Maybe it couldn't be done, but it would
be fun to try.
I concur with Michael Gates' remarks concerning FSM's
newest release: Alex North: SHOES OF A FISHERMAN.
This is a brilliant extended release from the original
and contains far more material than previously heard
on either the German release, or, for that matter, the
origianl LP release. The sound is brilliant and
solid. More importantely, it shows the sheer
brilliance of North and his unique style in composing
film scores. He was one of the best of his generation
and this newest release only enhances that fact. A
must for any North fan.

I've been listening to this and it is wonderful. It's interesting
to here some of North's ideas for '2001' in a different context,
and perhaps we get some hints in parts of this score of what
the rest of '2001' would have been like if North had
been allowed to complete it.
This music is both majestic and intimate, in the epic
North style. There is much more music on this CD than
on the German (?) 'Fisherman' import, which always sounded
disjointed to me. I haven't listened to disc two yet (source
music and music from "MGM 1968 Widescreen Spectaculars")
but I'm looking forward to it.

I have grown up humming the melody from the Shoes of the Fisherman
which is both haunting and Russian in character. I was wondering if
anyone knows if it is an original score of Alex North or a Russian
song which North used?

I agree, but I wonder how much it differs from the German "Gadfly"
CD release -- other than in improved sound quality, which I'm sure
is fantastic.
NEW FSM CDs: Bronislau Kaper's THE SWAN and Alex North's THE SHOES
OF THE FISHERMAN (2CD set).
Film Score Monthly's new limited edition CDs feature a classic
historical score by Bronislau and one of Alex North's great "epic"
works:
BOTH CDs IN STOCK NOW!
###
Silver Age Classics: THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN (2CD set)
The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968) was a modern-day epic starring
Anthony Quinn as the first Russian Pope, co-starring Sir Laurence
Olivier, Oskar Werner and David Janssen. The soundtrack is one of
Alex North's large-scale symphonic masterpieces, continuing the
tradition of Spartacus (1960) and Cleopatra (1963) and reworking
ideas from his rejected music for Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space
Odyssey (1968). The three major themes are a Russian-flavored melody
for Quinn's character; romantic, pop-based music for Janssen's TV
reporter; and mammoth, crashing chords for the church itself (the
material reused from 2001).
The Shoes of the Fisherman was released on LP at the time of the
film. FSM's premiere 2CD set features the complete underscore on
disc one, remixed in stereo from the six-track 35mm masters,
including a bonus section of additional and alternate cues.
Disc two of this release is a "bonus disc" of additional recordings
designed to "close the book" on three widescreen M-G-M spectacles
which were all released at the end of 1968: source music and pop-
based alternates for The Shoes of the Fisherman; Michel Legrand's
demo recordings for Ice Station Zebra (earlier released as FSMCD
Vol. 6, No. 2); and Ron Goodwin's LP re-recording of Where Eagles
Dare (FSMCD Vol. 6, No. 21).

###
Golden Age Classics: THE SWAN
The Swan (1956) was a romantic fairy tale set in early 20th century
Europe, based on a play by Ferenc Molnar. Grace Kelly, Alec Guinness
and Louis Jourdan star in what begins as a comedy of manners,
becomes a love triangle, and ends up as a bittersweet coming-of-age
tale. The film features fine performances, gorgeous architecture and
splendid M-G-M production values -- including a heartfelt and
evocative score by Bronislau Kaper.
Kaper, who considered The Swan to be one of his finest projects,
ably matched the film's moods: He provided a shimmering, beautiful
waltz for Kelly; light and frothy music for the affairs of the royal
palace; an adapation of the Hungarian "Rakoczy March" as Guinness's
theme; and lengthy, romantic passages for the deepening drama.
Kaper's score for The Swan (conducted by studio music head Johnny
Green) was released on LP at the time of the film. This premiere CD
features the complete original soundtrack in stereo, remixed from
the original three-track masters; as well as the brief passages
recorded specifically for the album, in monaural sound, as they were
recorded.

I actually just discovered that this ww2 documentry made during the
warin 1944. It was judged as culturally significant by the United
States Library of Congress.
It's one of the films North scored during ww2 while he was drafted
to compose music for documentries (heh). A fictionalised remake was
made a few years back. Has anyone seen the documentry and heard the
score? I'd be interested in hearing something from North's pre-film
career of which seems to be totally hidden in obscurity.

Sorry I don't know anything about that movie, however I do infact
happen to have that score. Which features a rock song that is
incorporated in the score. It is a pretty small drama score, and is
of course very good.
For a book on the history and films of National General
Pictures, I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information on
the Alex North-scored film, "A Dream of Kings." Any assistance is
greatly appreciated and will be credited in the book's

I don't think it's for lack of desire or trying. From what I've
heard, there are legal (copyright) problems. I think MCA still holds
the rights, and they couldn't care less about releasing an expanded
CD from an "old" film that wouldn't generate mega-bucks.
When the film was restored for the special edition DVD, I assume the
entire soundtrack, including all the music, was transferred to
digital tape for remix. (Anyone know differently?) That would mean a
full release with high-quality sound remains a possibility -- someday.
