Hi, Folks.

Lots of news to report.

Obviously, everyone knows by now that I am living in Ridgecrest with
my fine friend, Fred Willis, the Founding Father of Walnut Hill
Productions after Kimmy and I separated on January 28th of this year.

Kimmy called today with a very sad story of her life alone, which I
can sypathize with but I am now a sworn bachelor, destined to remain
alone and never again enter into a relationship unless a true miracle
happens. I shall always love her and be her friend, but I cannot
repeat past errors again. I greave for her in that light and am truly
sorry, especially since she is no longer involved with the company.

Cyrus Roton and I have been servicing organs. We finished a repair on
a Rodgers 755 Digital Church Organ at the United Methodist Church in
Palmdale wherein the organ was very much out of tune. After the job
was completed, we had time to play her a bit. The results can be
enjoyed in this month's issue of the Walnut Hill Gazette, along with
some pictures of the organ.

Also in this issue is a reference to some new material from
Eugene "Don" Hayek and his intrepid band of fine musicians from New
Jersey known as the Center Street Combo, featuring four great tunes
for your pleasure. Be sure to check that out on his page in the
Featured Artist section at the site. Great stuff!

Tomorrow, it's off to Bishop, north of Ridgecrest, to work on another
organ that needs the love only Cy can give. We plan to take pictures
and make recordings for all to experience. Stay tuned for that.

Fred and I are getting on great, as both of us are devout theatre
organ enthusiasts. Fred is diving into the graphics department to
fill the void left by Kimmy's dismissal, so look for his new widgetry
to appear on the site in the days ahead. Also, I am planning the
assembly of the new Mighty MidiTzer Style 216 control interface and
will be aquiring the parts over the next 60 days to bring two manuals
online. I plan to purchase two M-Audio 61-note MIDI controllers for
starters. That will allow me to play TPO virtually again every day.

Later, after this is going, I plan to add pedals and have the FCB
1010 foot controller Dan Rowland bought for me shipped here from
Tennessee. Though it will be a slow go, we will eventually have a
full fledged virtual 2/10 Style 216 Mighty WurliTzer Theatre Pipe
Organ playing again here at Walnut Hill.

I want to thank all those who have made walnut Hill what it is today,
and I want to welcome all the newcomers into the fold. This is going
to be a great year for the King of Instruments as we forge ahead full
steam.

God bless and happy playing.

I seem to be locked out of the Miditzer forum.  Can anyone put me on the right track please?
I've re-entered my username and password that I've been using since day one and it's not being accepted.  I thought I'd go around that and just create a different username and went through all the sign-up only to be rejected again.  It says something about 'cookies'.  I've never changed anything with my internet settings, as far as I know, cookies are enabled.

I had this problem a long time ago. In my case is was solved by
deleting all cookies associated with the forum, virtualorgan.com.
I also was pretty sure I didn't fiddle with the Internet setting.

Hi, Folks.

Today, I got to play a huge Allen Digital Church Organ, a Model 460
Custom, installed at the NAWS Navel Base Chapel here in Ridgecrest,
California. Over the weekend, I plan to take some pictures and do a
recording of a concert that is being given on this fine instrument.

This organ is huge, with over 100 ranks including a 64' Resultant in
the Pedal, thousands of watts of power that can and will shake things
up good, and a separate swell shoe for each manual. The console is
made of exotic wood and the enormity of it is truly overwhelming.

Later, after the dust settles from the show, I plan to go back for a
second helping at the bench, wherein I will take the trusty Zoom H4
along to catch my resultant noodling (no pun intended.) We will be
featuring this magnificent machine in our March edition at Walnut
Hill. Stay tuned...

In other news, the editorial for the Skandia Theatre 2/9 Mighty
WurliTzer Theatre Pipe Organ that our very own Per Schultz of
Stockholm, Sweden, is involved with is coming along nicely and is now
available for your perusal. To find it, go to the site and click on
the News stop. Once that page loads, click on the Skandia WurliTzer -
Per Schultz editorial feature in the Contributing Editors list near
the top of the page. This is a work in progress, so stay tuned to
that as well.

Enjoy!

God bless and happy playing.

Afternoon everyone,

Well I am now in the process of preparing to acquire the components,
cables etc. to midify and modify my Conn 652 into a digital TPO,
gulp!!!!!

As part of this activity I want to add additional Stop Tabs and
pistons to enable the use of the extra ranks and controls.

Does anyone have (or know anyone) that may have Conn spares or even a
non working console? Although I intend to have stop tabs replaced /
re-engraved I am looking for the actual switching components... so I
guess I'm looking at parts from any of the better specified
instruments like the Theatrette, Trinidad, Martinique etc.

I'm based in the UK.

Regards,

Peter

Congrats Richard and I'm sure we are all eager to hear
such an instrument recorded on the Zoom H4. Thanks to
the info on the H4 given by Tom Hoehn, I now am using
one as well. A soon as the heating season is over
here, I'll be back in the Lafayette to get those
samples for Kent.
The 2 gig SD's have hit a low here at about $12 per
gig, so I've stocked up. I see 1 gig SD's at $10. What

Hello All,

I just wanted to touch base with everyone to give you an update on the VTPO sound font project.  I just finished the stereo recording of samples from Bill Shrives beautiful 2/4 Robert Morton today.  His organ has a lovely Concert Flute, Violin, Diapason and Vox Humana that blend extremely well together.  I'll post some recordings of the Organ playing some of his QRS player organ rolls up on my website as soon as I can.

I've started the processing of his Violin rank today and have so far been able to  remove all of the background noise from all of the Violin samples and will start the looping process tomorrow.  The next step will be to start building the first part of the sound font. I'll keep you posted as things progress.

Doc, I'm so glad to hear that you're back out and about, I look forward to hearing your new recordings.

Eugene, I'm really looking forward to working with the samples you can send me when you get the time to record them.

TTYL

Best Regards,

Kent

Hi Everyone,
I am trying to find out a little information regarding auto rhythms
and accompaniments.

In addition to adding the usual traps and tuned percussions to my
digital TPO (being rebuilt using my Conn 652)I am wanting to build in
a rhythm unit... I guess there will be some gasps of horror at this
request... but I love traditional theatre style playing and I also
enjoy using the rhythm unit too :-)

Are there any kits, or products still being produced....? Quality
sounds and midi capability is really what I want but a standalone
older analogue rhythm unit might be ok too....

any ideas?

Hi Peter,

IMHO the Alesis SR16 with articulated drum samples
provides the best results when using good velocity
input. I've used them all in my studio work. Best
"bang for the buck" SR16.

Hi Peter, How about a computer and "Band in a Box"? PGMusic.com (lower
case).

If you want the Push the button, then The DTC or Digital Toy Counter, by
Mr. Updyke.
At around $1k. But this is a "sound" type unit, like Boat Whistle, Auto
Horn, Train whistle etc.

Maybe one could use General Midi traps could be used? . One would need
to key in a patch and note by midi. Band in a Box, would probably be easier?

Good luck. Also you could program a MIDI file to key your VTPO's traps.
I may have some sample files? I have a old copy of BIAB I could look. It
uses General MIDI traps.

Thanks for the lead on the "band in a box".... I'm just downloading the  demo just in case it's what I'm after.....

As regards the other 'traps'... These will e done by sound font on both Artisan Instruments sound engine and also my Alesis QSR.... What I need in addition to these is a push button unit  for rhythm patterns for things like March, Rhumba, Samba, Quickstep etc.....

It's old technology now so I would have thought there was someone somewhere who could supply a unit in kit form :-)

Regards for now,

I've hardly taken the unit out of it's box since I purchased it...
it's just something I was told would be good for the 'traps'.... plus
it has great pianos, vibes and effects on it too.....So I purchased it

Hi Pete,

Could be that the SR16 samples are in the QSR64. If
so, you have a great set right there. BIAB would only
come in a close 5th place if you used the Roland SC
88, a soft synth which is packaged with BIAB 2007.
Otherwise you will be stuck with whatever samples are
in your onboard soundcard.

You know it shouldn't be a big job to fit an accelerator pedal to

Hi, Folks

On February 22nd, Cyrus Roton invited the Bone Doctor to come and play
the Mighty Rodgers/Artisan organ installed at his residence in
Ridgecrest, so Doc obliged and went there to give a mini-concert on
this fabulous instrument.

To listen to this material, go to the site, and once inside, click on
the "News" stop at the top of the page. Then, scroll down a bit until
you see the Mini Concert topic in the "From The Webmaster's Desk"
section near the top of the page just past the calender.

There are nine songs, many of which you have heard Doc play before,
but not on this unique instrument. Enjoy!

Thanks all!!

Hi Keith,

In actuality, Kester 60/40 at a .032 gauge should fit the bill.  You could use a silver based solder but, this is really overkill as, such solder is used mainly for medical equipment and by NASA.  The most important thing to remember is to use solder with a ROSIN based flux.  The solder used for plumbing contains an acid based flux and, this will destroy any electrical connection after time.  There is a also a  62/38 solder but, the differences in tin/lead composition is negligble when using such a small gauge solder.  At least, I never noticed much of a difference.  Hope this helps.
Regards,
George

Hi Eveyone,

Hoping someone out there knows or remembers the thread and on which list it was, but there was a discussion sometime back talking about an electronic solder formulation that was a better grade/alloy than the typical "Radio Shack" garbage. Can anyone remember what it is and the electronic "e-tailer" it could be had from?

The best solder to use is a 63/37 blend, referred to as eutectic solder. The blend consists of 63% tin and 37% lead. It melts at 361 degrees F and goes from solid state to a liquid state with no "plastic state". This "plastic" in between state is what causes cold solder joints. Eutectic solder has no such in between state. NASA and many other mission critical operations specify this type.

Kester and several other solder manufacturers make it and it should be available in such places as www.digikey.com , www.jameco.com to mention a few. While slightly more expensive than "standard" 60/40 solder, it is 100% better.

Ed

A part number for 63/37 solder from Jameco is 112344CM. I literally soldered thousands of connections on my Rodgers 340 with not one bad joint. This solder is either solid or liquid.

This is the best solder to use. It's what we used at North American Aviation on
Project
Apollo. Remember that? I also used it in repairing organs for a dealer and
building
Devtronix kits.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to drop a line to thank everyone for once again coming to the table with not only the item I was looking for, but various reasons to use it and not use it, which now gives me infomation to make an educated decision. Absolutely fantastic! That's the reason these lists are great! You learn a huge amount!

Google has added a patent search feature to its site. Now you can
easily search the patent database for all those 'Hope-Jones' patents
you've been wondering about. It's fun to look at the vintage
illustrations.
