Elephant Man has been accused of promoting homophobia

Reggae stars Elephant Man and Vybz Kartel have had their Music of Black Origin
(Mobo) nominations withdrawn in a row about homophobic lyrics.
Mobo organisers had demanded the pair apologise for anti-gay lyrics in some of
their early songs after complaints from gay rights campaigners. The singers'
representatives said they had "moved on" but no written apology had been
received by the judging panel. "The last thing Mobo wants to do is encourage
prejudice," said a spokesman. "Mobo has not yet received written apologies as
previously promised. We have therefore alerted the Mobo Academy to this
situation and a decision has been taken to withdraw the nominations for Elephant
Man and Vybz Kartel." The Mobo Academy decides who is nominated for each award,
while the public votes for the eventual winner. Gay rights group OutRage! said
it was pleased about the decision to axe the Jamaican acts from the best reggae
act category. "The singers' refusal to apologise is indicative of their
unrepentant violent homophobia," said spokesman Brett Lock.
Kanye West leads the pack with seven Mobo nominations

"We applaud the decision of the Mobos to drop these artists. Incitement to
murder should never be rewarded." OutRage! said Vybz Kartel's Bedroom
Slaughteration, and Elephant Man's We Nuh Like Gay and A Nuh Fi Wi Fault, both
advocated killing homosexuals. Mobo organisers said their stance had been clear
from the beginning. "The Mobo Awards... do not condone music that clearly
incites violence to gay and lesbian people nor do they advocate censorship of
artistic expression." Another reggae act, Beenie Man, did not make it on to the
shortlist at all after the organisers wrote on the public ballot forms that they
did not support music which incites violence towards gay people. Beenie Man
recently issued a statement through his record company, apologising for using
homophobic lyrics.
Broadcast row
The Mobo nominations are chosen by a panel which includes record industry
figures and music journalists. Newcomer Kanye West leads the field for this
year's awards, with seven nominations. Award winners will be announced on 30
September - a highlights show will be broadcast on BBC One on 6 October.
OutRage! had previously written to the BBC asking them not to show the ceremony
unless Mobo organisers withdrew the controversial nominations. A spokesman for
the BBC said: "The BBC will not broadcast any homophobic lyrics."

This year's Mobo Awards, honouring the best in black music, will take place at
the Royal Albert Hall on 30 September.

ERIE, PA. (AP) _ Chicago rapper Twista was hurt in a van crash that killed a
member of his security staff, state police said. Twista, whose real name is Carl
Mitchell, was treated and released from Saint Vincent Health Center in Erie,
Pa., after the van in which he was riding crashed on Interstate 90 near Girard
just after 4 a.m. September 6, police said. Another man in the van, Arthur Dixon
of Chicago, died after he was taken to Hamot Medical Center, authorities said.
Five other men in the van were hurt, none seriously, police and hospital
officials said. The van was headed from Syracuse, N.Y. to Chicago when the crash
occurred, said Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook. No charges have been filed
against the driver, whom police identified as Otis Bankhead of Chicago. Police
are investigating how the van veered off the road and into the median, where it
rolled over.

Mitchell, 30, was originally known as Tung Twista and was listed in
Guinness World Records in 1992 as the fastest rapper in the world. His latest
album, Kamikaze, is on the SoundScan charts. Twista had been scheduled to appear
in Albany, N.Y. on Monday, but the show was canceled so another rapper on the
bill, LL Cool J, could be with his wife after surgery, according to the Web site
for Albany's Pepsi Arena.

Jay-Z

RESTRAINED: Jay-Z's Urban Menswear/Rocawear clothing company was forced to scrap
the name of its spring fashion line after a trademark question was raised by
competitor Maggy London International, which accused the rapper of infringing
upon its "MUSE" trademark, according to a lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal
court. Rocawear had planned to call its 2005 spring line of $35-to-$250 clothes
and jewelry "Rocawear MUSE," reports Women's Wear Daily. However, Maggy London
has sold women's apparel and accessories...

that he videotapes his groupie encounters. According to ElitesTV, 50 routinely
takes groupies to a room monitored with hidden video cameras in every angle
imaginable. "No matter what you do, it's on camera. All angles, you are on tape.
I got it set up. There are spy cameras all over the room," 50 told ElitesTV.
"They cannot say I took it. It proves they gave it to me - they willingly gave
it. "In the event that women opt to go forward with a lawsuit, 50 said that he
would release the tape for the public to see. "I'd put it on the Internet unless
they dropped the charges" he revealed.

P. Diddy has two reasons to celebrate this week - he has just opened a flagship
New York clothing store and he has been dubbed the richest entertainer under 40.
Finance magazine Fortune has named Diddy as the top earner for the past 12
months after calculating the ever-busy star took home a staggering $315 million.
Jay-Z and Will Smith also made it onto the new rich list.

Field Mob group member Shawn "Kalage" Johnson was arrested in Atlanta on
kidnapping charges, according to reports. Police claim Johnson took a
six-month-old girl that he believes he fathered and disappeared in July. While
Johnson is in custody, police said he will not reveal the whereabouts of the
child, who is still missing.
