Source Magazine ordered to pay rap star Eminem $131K in copyright beef.

SEPTEMBER 13--The Source magazine, which already has a tough time with the
prompt payment of its bills, has been ordered to write the most unpalatable of
all checks, a six-figure one payable to Mr. Marshall Mathers, the hip-hop
publication's archenemy. Federal Judge Gerard Lynch last month ordered the
Source Magazine to pay Mathers (aka Eminem) $131,388 to cover legal fees
incurred in connection with a copyright lawsuit filed last December by the music
superstar. I have legal document towards Eminem and Source Magazine. The hefty
judgment came two months after Lynch ruled that The Source had violated a court
order barring the magazine from publishing the complete lyrics to unreleased
songs recorded by the 31-year-old Eminem when he was a teenager. One of those
ancient raps stated that "black girls are dumb, and white girls are good
chicks"--proof, The Source claimed, that the rapper was racist. Lynch's order, a
copy of which you'll find below, is a major victory for Eminem in his
lengthy feud with The Source and owners David Mays and Raymond "Benzino" Scott.
Of course, things could have been worse for The Source, since Eminem's Shady
Records had been seeking about $175,000 in legal fees, a figure Lynch reduced by
a quarter. Here's hoping that the rapper's new album, due November 16, addresses
his recent vanquishment of The Source in Em's usually measured and thoughtful
manner.

CHICAGO Sept. 13, 2004 — Oprah Winfrey celebrated the premiere of her 19th
season by surprising each of her 276 audience members with a new car.
"We're calling this our wildest dream season, because this year on

the Oprah show, no dream is too wild, no surprise too impossible to pull off,"
Winfrey said on the show that aired Monday. Oprah Winfrey, one of the world's
richest entertainers, surprised her fans Monday by giving each of her 276
audience members a new car for celebrating the premiere of her show's 19th
season. The billionaire talk-show host told the audience that everybody will get
a new Pontiac G-6 midsize 2005 sports sedan. Winfrey screamed and jumped up and
down on the stage, yelling "Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car!"
She then led the audience into the parking lot to check out their new cars.
Winfrey told the audience that they will get to choose their own color, and the
car will include special features such as XM satellite radio, OnStar Safety and
heated leather seats. Winfrey said the audience members were particularly chosen
because family and friends had told the show's producers they needed new wheels.
The cars, priced at $28,400 if fully loaded, were donated by Pontiac, according
to the carmaker. Pontiac, a division of General Motors (GM: Research,
Estimates), has also agreed to pay sales tax for the lucky audience. "The Oprah
Winfrey Show" is produced in Chicago by Harpo Productions Inc. and syndicated to
212 domestic markets and 109 countries by King World. Harpo is Oprah spelled
backward.

According to ElitesTV, the microphone allegedly struck Tom Wilshire in the
face and knocked him unconscious at Britain's recent Reading Festival. In late
August, the Reading crowd booed and threw bottles at 50 during his performance.
While a bulk of the audience booed 50, Wilshire contends that he was one of the
few cheering 50 on before he abruptly exited the stage because of the crowd's
rude behavior. "His parting gift to the crowd was to hurl his microphone into
the audience," said Wilshire. "It hit me and my legs went from under me."

Congressional Black Caucus wives apparently don't see anything wrong with a
little "Bump n' Grind." A minor controversy broke out Friday when some members
of the Congressional Black Caucus objected to legally challenged R&B singer R.
Kelly as the entertainment for a Washington, D.C., fundraiser. CBC spouses are
responsible for tapping the talent for the annual fundraising event.

The beleaguered Kelly, free on bond since being hit with 21 counts of child
pornography-related offenses in 2002, is still awaiting trial in his hometown of
Chicago. Seven of the initial 21 charges against the "Ignition" singer have been
dismissed, and he has vehemently denied the allegations, but he's hardly
regarded as a model citizen for his sex-tape antics. "I would not have invited
R. Kelly," Congressman William Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat and CBC
Foundation chairman, told the Associated Press Friday. Other CBC members "worry
that it will overshadow the event," he said. But not everyone saw Kelly's
presence at the fundraiser as such a big deal.

"We're sorry William Jefferson feels that way," Allan Mayer, a Kelly spokesman,
told E! Online Friday. "But the fact is, in this country, people are innocent
until proven guilty." For his part, Kelly said he was simply "privileged and
honored to be invited to help such a distinguished group raise money for such a
worthy cause." The charity event helped raise money for young urban
professionals seeking scholarships to further their education. "I can't think of
anything more important to support than education," said Kelly in a Jive Records
press release Thursday.

Despite the criticism over his appearance, the singer performed for a crowd of
around 2,000 Friday night at the Washington Convention Center. Kelly's legal
woes over the last few years certainly haven't hurt his record sales. The
Grammy-winning singer's last two releases, The Chocolate Factory and the just
released Happy People/U Saved Me, peaked at number one and two, respectively, on
the Billboard 200. Kelly has sold more than 30 million records worldwide since
his first release, Born in the 1990s, in 1992. Next up for Kelly is one of the
most anticipated tours of the fall--his Best of Both Worlds tour with hip-hop
heavy Jay-Z. Kelly had to ask a judge for permission to go on the road with
Jay-Z, and was cleared to do so earlier this summer. Kelly and Jay-Z will hit 40
cities on the tour, which bows in Chicago Sept. 29.

NEW YORK -- Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five are among the nominees for the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - the first rap artists to get that distinction -
joining U2, Randy Newman and the O'Jays on the ballot.

Getting his start as a DJ at Bronx parties in the late 1970s, Grandmaster Flash
later joined with the Furious Five for the social commentary of "The Message"
and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It").

Other nominees include blues guitarist Buddy Guy, rockabilly pioneer Wanda
Jackson, rock band the Pretenders, soul singer Percy Sledge, "Centerfold"
singers the J. Geils Band and the late country singer Conway Twitty.

Previous nominees on the ballot: the Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, the Stooges,
Lynyrd Skynyrd and Gram Parsons.

Singers of "Back Stabbers" and a string of other soulful hits, the O'Jays had
their chart heyday in the 1970s. A singer of satirical songs like "Short
People," Newman is now one of the Hollywood's most successful composers of movie
music.

Musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote, and results of the 20th
annual election will likely be announced in December. Artists are eligible to be
inducted into the Rock Hall after at least 25 years have passed since their
first record was released.
