Hi Everybody,
I just returned from sitting in with Joe Louis Walker in Sacramento and Joe's
bass player, Henry Oden, mentioned that Robert Jr. Lockwood has passed, yet I've
seen nothing about it from either Bluescorner2 or any other Blues group to which
I subscribe. I'm very surprised by this, as Robert was our last direct link to
his step father, Robert Johnson. This would be a very sad loss. I had the
pleasure of meeting Robert Jr. when I was touring with Sonny Rhodes. He was a
very kind and gracious person and an amazing Blues artist. I'm sure he'll be
sorely missed. If I'm mistaken about this, please accept my apologies, but Henry
said he saw it on the Internet. Can anyone shed some light on this?......Steve

I added this guy to my myspace friends. I think he is harmless from
what I can tell. Although I would question those of you that are
touting him, HAVE you HEARD his um music? This guy recently co-opted
someones good intentions and tried to cash in with a rip off version
of John Mellencamps "Little pink houses" with the proviso that he is
not a good strummer one could substitute player...Im sure he is just
trying to get traffic to his site.

Music to the ears {bluesmusiclinks}

From Lonely Planet BLUELIST 2007
Article from: escape

Send this article: Print Email

FROM the quirky to the classic, the new edition of Lonely Planet
BLUELIST 2007 reveals the best in travel for the coming year. This
week, we look at the best music and place combinations, according to
Lonely Planet.

HIP-HOP AND RAP & NEW YORK, USA
Hip-hop and rap erupted in New York in the '70s, and the city still
boasts the hottest underground rap scene to be found anywhere in the
world. Small-scale venues like Demerara's and Club Pure host weekly
'battles', where rappers lyrically shred each other on stage and the
baddest, most fluid rapper wins prizes and prestige in the eyes of his
or her peers. The more time you spend in the original concrete jungle,
the more hiphop's raw energy will get under your skin, and you'll
appreciate why this genre has become the most commercially successful
musical phenomenon ever. Keep it real, yo.

SALSA & HAVANA, CUBA
In Cuba, salsa is a way of life. After the sun sets, the rhythm of the
beat seeps through the city's dilapidated walls to get your hips
swinging and your shoulders swaying. Most venues don't get started
until close to midnight and with no licensing restrictions will stay
open until the last customer dances into the night. Each of the city's
10 principal districts has its own unique flavour, but if you're
looking for modern salsa in a trendy club check out the venues below
Teatro National. For a bit of '50s retro, and dancers replete with
extravagant headdresses, check out the legendary open-air Tropicana.

PUNK & TOKYO, JAPAN
The extent to which punk is becoming mainstream here is shown in the
production of a set of Sex Pistols 'action figures' by a Japanese toy
company to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Never Mind the
Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols album release. The punk scene in
Tokyo has been around just as long and, as you'd expect, its
proponents make up a highly visible minority in the metropolis. As is
always the case in Tokyo you can expect the unexpected, with punks
rocking out on street corners or outside Shinjuku station, sometimes
accompanied by artists creating anarchic visions inspired by the music.

OPERA & FLORENCE, ITALY
Italian intellectuals in the 16th century were well into ancient
mythology and thought it would be cool to set the old Greek myths to
music. A new art form was born. The world's first opera, Jacopo Peri's
Dafne was performed in Florence in 1598. The opulence and power of the
music reflected the grandeur of a city at the height of its powers.
The ruling Medici family was sufficiently taken with it to allow
Peri's next work, Eurydice, to be performed as part of Maria di Medici
and Henry IV's wedding celebrations in 1600. Relive the effusive
wonderment of opera's infant years by attending performances at
Florence's grand auditorium, the Teatro Comunale.

COUNTRY & NASHVILLE, USA
It's a curious fact that all visitors to the spiritual and commercial
home of country music are compelled to adopt a 'southern drawl' for
the duration of their stay. Perhaps this is because your senses are
flooded with images of country legends, from Dolly Parton to Garth
Brooks, the second you step off the plane. Or maybe it's because
you're simply overwhelmed by the rustic love emanating from Saturday
night's Grand Ole Opry radio show, where every country singer dreams
of cutting loose, and the 3716-sq-metre exhibition at the Country
Music Hall of Fame. Ya'll find the place unique, family friendly and
in love with country now, y'hear?

JAZZ & NEW ORLEANS, USA
Wander around New Orleans' famous French Quarter, where the spirits of
jazz greats such as Freddie Keppard and Louis Armstrong can be found
within a myriad of fabulous clubs and bars, and you'll be hard pressed
to notice the effects wreaked by Hurricane Katrina. The city's long
association with jazz, which dates back to the 18th century, has been
a buoy that locals have clung to in their efforts to revive their
beloved city. The annual Jazz & Heritage Festival attracts legions of
music-lovers who also come to savour the rich architectural heritage,
sumptuous cuisine and genuinely warm welcome of this uniquely
cosmopolitan place.

BLUES & CHICAGO, USA
Forty years ago you could duck into any downtown Chicago bar or club
and expect to hear one or several legendary musicians such as Buddy
Guy, BB King or John Lee Hooker singing the blues. Today, little has
changed, except some of the old guard have passed on and the baton has
been taken up by a new breed, such as Blues in the Schools students
Honey Boy Edwards, Henry Townsend and Homesick James. The annual
month-long Blues Festival provides for a summer of scintillating
sounds, but it's in the darkened clubs where the tradition, a legacy
of southern African Americans, is kept alive.

DRUM AND BASS & LONDON, ENGLAND
If names like Mampi Swift, Andy C, IC3, GQ and Skibadee ('When I say
"Skibadee", you say "bo!"') get your pulse racing at 180 beats per
minute - the speed at which your average drum and bass or jungle track
gets played - then head to the undisputed junglist capital of the
universe. In London, you can go mental in your pick of small venues
and superclubs serving up the best urban audio assaults nightly. Here,
at laser-rich spots such as Fabric and the End, you can see the likes
of Roni Size, Goldie and the above mentioned without having to pay
through the nose for the privilege. Wicked!

SYMPHONY & PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
The month of May means music in this pristine medieval citadel.
Whether it's the world-renowned Prague Symphony Orchestra kicking off
its annual concert season with a performance in the Old Town Square
(Starom stské nám stí), or the Prague Academy of Music raising the
roof of the city's biggest concert hall, the Smetana (located inside
the fabulous Municipal House), classical music-lovers and romantics
will be captivated. If you don't know Brahms from Beethoven, then
Prague is the perfect setting to sample a taste of high culture. The
key to unlocking the city's great mysteries, concealed in its
architecture, is to have an orchestra's strings reverberating within
its buildings.

POP & LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND
Since spawning the Fab Four, Liverpool has been at the forefront of
global pop-music culture. It's interesting to ponder such metaphysical
mind-benders as, 'If it hadn't been for John Lennon, would Justin
Timberlake exist?' as you immerse yourself in the European Capital of
Culture for 2008. You can still visit many venues associated with
Liverpool's prominent bands (The Farm, Frankie Goes to Hollywood,
Gerry and the Pacemakers), including the Cavern, where The Beatles got
their first break. Ask the famously friendly locals for directions and
they might even regale you with a humorous personal recollection about
the artists before they became stars.

Rusty Wright Blues, a seven-piece blues act from Flint Michigan will
represent the Detroit Blues Society February 1-3 at the Blues
Foundation's 23rd annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis
Tennessee.

Six preliminary competitions preceded the Motor City Breakdown final
competition held November 26th at the beautiful Emerald Theater in
Mt. Clemens.

According to Detroit Blues Society President Steve Allen, the Detroit
Blues Society (www.dbsblues.com) hosts the single largest grouping of
preliminary Blues Challenge Events in the world. In 2006, more than
30 acts competed in six preliminary rounds, vying for the honor of
representing Detroit in the IBC's solo/duo and electric divisions.

Rusty Wright Blues is fronted by husband and wife
guitarists/vocalists Rusty Wright and Laurie LaCross-Wright. On
keys/vocals, Steve Himes has been performing with the couple since
1999. Drummer/vocalist Dan Mata joined the band in April 2006 and in
August, Randy McEntire was recruited to play bass, shifting from lead
guitar to bass just three weeks prior to the group's jump from
supporting act to festival headliner. Brand new to the lineup are
alto and tenor saxophonists Brandon and Brent Mata.

All of the band members reside in Flint or the surrounding area with
the exception of Brent Mata, who lives in Grand Rapids.

Rusty Wright Blues' Sadson Music debut CD Ain't No Good Life was
released August 1st. The 13-song disc is receiving stellar reviews
from blues critics and radio show hosts, and is getting airplay
across the US and in ten other countries.

Ain't No Good Life is available at www.rustywrightblues.com, through
iTunes and amazon.com, and is being distributed by Sadson Music and
CD Baby in conjunction with Super D/Phantom Distribution.

More than 130 blues acts from all over the world converge on Memphis
each winter to compete in the IBC. The list of blues artists whose
careers were launched at the IBC over the years includes: Susan
Tedeschi, Michelle Wilson, Michael Burks, Tommy Castro, Albert
Cummings, Larry Garner, Richard Johnston, Zac Harmon and Matthew
Skoller.

Details about the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge
can be found at www.blues.org.

not a good strummer one could substitute player...Im sure he is just
trying to get traffic to his site.
