Tammy: 'Fraid I can't help with a review of the band you mentioned,
but did want to say congrats on getting into live music. Frankly,
almost any band is going to be better that canned stuff... Live
Music Rocks my dear! I hope you find a core of musicians who have
fun playing and entertaining a bar crowd, and who treat the whole
deal in a professional manner -- and many do. And of course that
your customers enjoy and say so with their wallets.

Good Luck.

Subject: Latest Blues News- John Mayall:
steve2blue4u

Interview.

John Mayall Tells A Few Stories

He is called the Father of British Blues. Eric Clapton said he had
the greatest school for musicians ever. John Mayall is a legend.
John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers have played nothing but pure, raw
blues for more than 40 years. The man has inspired generations and
influences the likes of Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green and
Mick Fleetwood.
Indeed, without an apprenticeship under Mayall, Taylor may never have
joined The Stones, Fleetwood Mac may never have formed and Eric
Clapton may never have become the great guitarist he is today.
John Mayall has certainly earned a place in the history of music.
He is about to come back to Australia to perform at the Melbourne
Music and Blues Festival from Feb 7 - 9.

John Mayall took time out to talk to Undercover Executive Producer
Paul Cashmere.

Paul Cashmere : John, your return to Australia is for the Melbourne
Music and Blues Festival. Thanks for coming back but we should
chastise you for the trips become less frequent for John Mayall and
the Blues Breakers in recent years.

John Mayall: It is nothing to do with me. It is the fact that
promoters can't put it together. We are always here and we are always
available but the thing that was against Australia and all places far,
far away is the cost of getting American artists over there. The
airfares are just astronomical. It is always the thing that has to
come off the top before you can even start planning the show.
Unfortunately the geography cripples it.

PC: You've had quite a few Aussie tours in the past.

JM: Certainly since the 70s at least half a dozen times.

PC: The Melbourne Music and Blues Festival has a great line-up,
yourself included. Have you been studying the playing field and the
acts that are on it?

JM: We just got onto the Internet and hit the link and I was really
surprised to see Ray Charles was going to be on it. He is going to be
on the same stage apparently before we play. Really, really, really
that is major for me.

PC: I'm sure you would be familiar with a lot of the names on the bill
and probably count some as friends.

JM: Yeah, that's true. Tony Joe White is on the show too and we have
recorded a couple of his songs over the years.

PC: Well, we are Undercover and you have recorded Undercover Agent For
The Blues.

JM: That's right. That is Tony's song.

PC: It's also a milestone year for you John. The year 2003 is the year
of your 70th birthday.

JM: Yeah I know, that came quick didn't it.

PC: Have you reflected on the last 40 years of the career yet?

JM: Not really, it just keeps going and the music is so evolving and I
enjoy it so much there is no end in sight.

PC: You started out quite late in life for a musician. You were 30
years old when the first record came out.

JM: Yeah, the reason for that was that blues wasn't an entity in the
music business in England. It was just a hobby of mine since my
teenage years. It was only when Alexis Korner and Cyril Davis kicked
off the so called "Blues Boom" in London in the early 60's, it just
clicked and the whole thing sort of exploded. So there it was and it
was my opportunity to consider switching over from an art to a music
career.

PC: It's also the 40th anniversary of the first record coming out for
you but unfortunately you can't use the term 40 Licks because someone
beat you to it.

JM: The good ol' Stones.

PC: That link with The Stones is very well documented when you found
that 18 year old guitarist Mick Taylor and trained him. What did you
see in an unknown 18 year old that sparked you to give him a go?

JM: It is the same with any musician that I hire. It has to be someone
who excites me and turns me on, it is great.

PC: But how does an 18 year old excite you? It's not like he had a
heritage.

JM: It is nothing to do with age. You take Shannon Curfman's
performance on the 'Along For The Ride" album. She was only 15. Her
chops and her singing are just remarkable. Age isn't the determining
factor. It is the talent that counts.

PC: You certainly have an ear for talent. Andy Fraser was 16 when you
found him and he went on to join Free.

JM: Yeah, yeah. He was recommended by Alexis when we had a need for a
new bass player. He was happy to come on board.

PC: And then there is your star pupil Eric Clapton.

JM: He left The Yardbirds because he wanted to play blues and there I
was waiting for him.

PC: And the Yardbirds have reformed.

JM: So I hear.

PC: You have the title bestowed on you "The Father of British Blues".

JM: I'll live that that, yeah.

PC: Is that how you'd like to be remembered?

JM: I'd rather be remembered as a musician and talent in my own rite
but I guess that can be the subsidiary title. It is all part of the
same thing really. The end product is the music that comes out.

PC: Eric Clapton said that you had the greatest school for musicians
ever in the world.

JM: Okay, well I guess coming from him I'll take it.

PC: Just looking at the names that have been associated over the years
… Jimmy Page, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Jack Bruce.

JM: Jimmy did produce one of my records. We all come back from the
same era.

PC: The band you currently have is Buddy Whittington, Tom Canning, Joe
Yuele and Hank Van Sickle. How long have you been with these guys?

JM: Joe is the longest. It has been 18 years with him. Buddy has been
8 or 9 years now. Hank is 3 years and Tom has been on a couple of
years since we did 'Along For The Ride' album.

PC: Hank is the baby at 42 years old then. You've changed a bit since
those years of 16 year old guitarists.

JM: (laughs) Yeah, I suppose so.

PC: Looking at Buddy's career. He is recognised as being as great as
any of the former students you had.

JM: He is absolutely phenomenal. When I first heard him he was in his
own band opening up for us in Dallas. I just had to get his phone
number in case there ever became an opportunity for me to use him.
Then about a year later when Coco Montoya went solo that was the
opening and I gave Buddy a call without a second thought. He is a
remarkable player.

PC: You've documented your feelings on the new level of guitarists out
there now on the song 'Kids Got The Blues' from the new album Stories.
You sing "there's a new generation / it's the 21st century / we've
come a long way". You obviously check out new talent all the time.

JM: The thing that is remarkable is that there are so many of them. I
haven't heard that many of them but just knowing that they are out
there and have record deals and they have club appearances and so
forth, it is something that never happened before. It just shows what
the power of the blues has on today's generation and how much it means
to people.

PC: Is there anyone in particular who inspired that song?

JM: I think it would apply to my favourites of the ones that I heard
and made steps for them to be on the 'Along For The Ride' album.
Shannon Curfman age 15, Jonny Lang who is 18 or 19 now. There are the
ones who immediately come to mind and funnily enough they are both
from Fargo, North Dakota which is the unlikeliest place you would
expect anyone to come from.

PC: Isn't that where that strange movie was made?

JM: Yeah 'Fargo' (laughs). Not exactly blues territory.

PC: There's a very serious song on the album, a very potent song for
the times called 'Pride and Faith'. You sing 'the power of evil is
escalating / we are trying to rise about the hate'. It continues 'the
news is all about the ratings / stories to exaggerate'. Obviously you
are taking a very serious look at the political world at the moment.
What are your thoughts on what is happening in the Middle East?

JM: It is just really sad that these things get so out of hand. War is
so stupid and futile. It is amazing that you get all these protesters
and it doesn't seem to do any good because the powers that be and the
heads of countries are just dead set on these power struggles. It is
just really a great shame. The war and the aggression is not the
answer. It is just a comment on the futility of it all. The fears in
the world are increased by News TV and the top story that is always
about bad things to happen. People lock their doors like it is going
to come around to their house. I think I have said all I needed to say
within the song. It was inspired of course by the towers going down in
New York.

PC: You have an interesting perspective because as a young man you
were in the army.

JM: Yeah, I had to go. I was called up. National Service, you know. I
had no say in it. I didn't see any fighting. I made myself
indispensable in the office as a typist. I was very gullible and was
talked into 3 years as opposed to 2 years National Service by a smart
recruiting officer and regretted it the moment I got into uniform and
started looking at a calendar.

PC: As a young man them, does that background give you now an
understanding of today's young men and women going off to war as
political pawns?

JM: They are being called up to actually go out and fight. I was in
the army and skirted around it although I went to Korea ever though it
was at an armistice time. If you had to go at all that was the best
time to go. It is really sad when people have to go off to fight.

PC: Congratulations on the new album 'Stories' debuting at #1 on the
Billboard Blues Chart.

JM: Yeah, that was a nice thing to happen. I don't know how long it
stayed on the charts but it was a nice kick-off point for it.

PC: That wasn't bad for an old bugger.

JM: Not bad indeed. (laughs). We'll keep that as a headline.

PC: I love all the different styles on the record but particularly 'I
Wish I Had'. That is great Boogie Woogie.

JM: Every time I make an album I try and put a little solo Boogie
Woogie in there. That is the way I started out.

PC: The genre of Boogie Woogie is almost a lost art in music these days.

JM: I know, yeah. It is what I started off with and it is the closest
to my background I could come up with. It is just a nice tribute to
the beginnings of things. Sometimes I do it as an encore, sometimes I
finish the set and then come back and just knock one out.

PC: How do you put a setlist together after all these years?

JM: We nearly stick with the same setlist that works. Every time we
have a new album we structure the set around the new album, so you'll
be hearing live versions of 'Stories' with some others thrown in
there. Basically we stick to the same structure so that one song
compliments the next one and so forth. We vary the tempos and key
changes and the subjects.

PC: Does 'Room To Move' still exist in the set?

JM: Yeah we sometimes do it. We don't do it every night but it is
always a good crowd pleaser at the end of the show.

PC: Do you consider that your signature tune?

JM: Definitely because people remember that the most out of all my
recorded works. We still have fun with that one. It is 99%
improvisation anyway so we can still do stuff with it every night.

PC: It's so special in Australia that someone even named their TV show
after it in the 70s. We had a show called 'Room To Move'.

JM: I heard about that.

PC: So there is your influence John. We talked about how you want to
be remembered and you can say "I want to be remembered as the guy who
inspired the name of an Australian TV show".

JM: (laughs) okay.

You can write to John Mayall via his website at www.johnmayall.com

John's new album is 'Stories' out through Warner Music.

John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers will perform at the Melbourne Music
and Blues Festival. The Melbourne Music and Blues Festival is on Feb
7, 8 and 9 at the Melbourne Convention Centre and along the banks of
the Yarra River.

I found this on my favorite band's bulletin board and decided to try
it. A little
while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now,
and came across an article similar to this that said you could make
thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of
$6.00! So I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most
of us, I was curious, so I kept reading.
Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and
addresses stated in the article. You then place your own name and
address in the bottom of the list at # 6, and post the article in at
least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So
after thinking it over, andtalking to a few people first, I thought
about trying it. I figured: "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps
and $6.00, right?" Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS
WHAT!?... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was
shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming!
In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week
I had made a total of over $1.000.00! In the third week I had over
$10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I
have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in
rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more
than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most
importantly, WHY it works... Also, make sure you print a copy of this
article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it.
I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you
will start making more money than you thought possible by doing
something so easy! Sugestion: Read this entire message carefully! (
print it out or download it.) Follow the simple directions adn watch
the money come in! It's easy; It's legal. And, your investment is
only $6.00 ( Plus postage)

IMPORTANT:
This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it
is 99% no risk - it really works! If all of the following
instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary
dividends! PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and
$50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains
successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants.
Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the
instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In
this business your product is not solid and tangible, it's a service.
You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large
corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However,
the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income
which is made from people like you and me asking to included in that
list. Here are the 4 easy steps to success.

STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on
each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6
US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so
the bill will not be seen through the envelope ( to prevent
thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal
them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of
paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00
bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY
LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for
it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried
about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S.
Post Office (1-800-752-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed
legal. Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:

# 1) John Davis
10121 Beaconsfield St
Detroit, Mi 48224

# 2) Amelia Jeune
P.O. Box 360251
Brooklyn, NY 11236

# 3) Gino Vaglivielo
1220 Kenway Ave
Deltona, FL 32738

# 4) Christopher Nunley
345 W. El Norte Pkwy #199
Escondido, CA 92026

# 5) Juliette Conrath
5 bis rue de Lancry
60200 COMPIEGNE
FRANCE

#6) Reid Haney
2116 ½ Valentine Street
Los Angeles, CA 90026

STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move
the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR
name as number 6 on the list.

STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as
close to original as possible. Now, post your mended article to at
least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All
you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you
make! You won't get very much unless you post like crazy. ) This is
perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302
& amp; amp; 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these
steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again
and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful
because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and bytheir
careful adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are
of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many
others have received will come your way. NOTE: You may want to retain
every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy
and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly
providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1
bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.) So, as each
post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members
will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with
one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so
that when your name reaches the # 1 position you will be receiving
thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $ 6.00
($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above) send it now,
add your own name to the list and you're in business.

DIRECTIONS FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS

STEP 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own
posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and
drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy'
from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the
computer's memory.

STEP 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top
of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will
paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name
to the list.

STEP 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do
your postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to
go back to.

STEP 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for
various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites,
discussions.)

STEP 5) Visit the message boards and post this article as a new
message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste
from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that
everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a
particular group, click the post message button. You're done with
your first one! Congratulations... THAT'S IT! All you have to do is
jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of
it, it will take 30 seconds for each newsgroup! REMEMBER, THE MORE
NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE! BUT YOU HAVE TO
POST A MINIMUM OF 200.

That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world
within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O. Box due to the
large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous,
you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it.
JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT. Now, each of the 5
persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each
with my name at # 5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the
original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200
MINIMUM posts with my name at # 3 and only receive 5 replies each, I
will make an additional $625.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each
of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at # 2
and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125!!!
Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups
with my name at # 1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I
will receive $15,625! With an original investment of only $6.00!
AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the
latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00to names
on the list, putting your name at # 6 again. And start posting again.
THE THING TO REMEMBER IS: Do you realize that thousands of people all
over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles
everyday? Just like you are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if
it really works?? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan
is played out and no one sends youthe money? So what! What are the
chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and
new honest people who are joining the internet and newsgroups
everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to
50,000 new users, everyday with thousands of those joining the actual
internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really
work!

Copeland, Magic Slim Lead W.C. Handy Nominees

Sporting five nominations each, Shemekia Copeland and Magic Slim lead
the field for the Blues Foundation's 24th annual W.C. Handy Blues
Awards. Fellow veterans Solomon Burke, W.C. Clark, and Charlie
Musselwhite each earned four nominations.
Copeland, who is the daughter of legendary blues guitarist Johnny
Copeland, is up for entertainer and traditional blues female artist of
the year, while her Dr. John-produced Alligator album "Talk to
Strangers," is up for blues album of the year and contemporary blues
album of the year. The Shemekia Copeland Band is also up for the blues
band of the year honor.
Chicago blues traditionalist Magic Slim pulled in nominations for
entertainer, male artist, and guitarist of the year. Along with his
band the Teardrops, he also received mentions in the traditional blues
album category for his Blind Pig album "Blue Magic," and in the blues
band of the year column.
Bob Dylan received his first W.C. Handy nomination, which came in the
song of the year category for "Stepchild," his contribution to Burke's
Fat Possum album "Don't Give Up on Me. The set, which also features
tracks written by Elvis Costello and Van Morrison, among others, is up
for blues album and soul/blues album of the year.
The Handy Awards will be held May 22 at the Orpheum Theater in
Memphis. Like in previous years, the Gibson Musical
