Spacey Going 'Beyond' Film in Darin Show

Thurs., Nov. 11, 2004
Entertainment - Reuters

By Chris Morris
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Not content merely to swing onscreen, Kevin
Spacey (news) will bring his interpretation of Bobby Darin (news)'s music to the
stage of the Wiltern in Los Angeles on Dec. 6.

Spacey -- who will perform Darin's repertoire backed by a full orchestra of
20-30 pieces -- will take the show to eight or nine other markets, mainly in
December, according to a spokeswoman for the William Morris Agency, which
represents the actor. Other engagements have not been finalized.

The Wiltern date will preface Lions Gate Films' release of Spacey's Darin biopic
"Beyond the Sea." The feature -- produced and directed by Spacey, who stars as
the vocalist/actor -- opens Dec. 10 in New York and Dec. 17 in Los Angeles
before entering wider release Dec. 29.

The Academy Award-winning actor does his own singing in "Beyond the Sea." The
Rhino Records soundtrack album, out Nov. 23, features Spacey's versions of 17
Darin classics.

Spacey -- who prepared for the role by working with producer Phil Ramone and
pianist-arranger Roger Kellaway, both vets of Darin's bands -- secured Darin's
original arrangements for use in the film from the vocalist's son, Dodd Darin,
and manager Steve Blauner.

When "Beyond the Sea" was in production, Spacey frequently said he wanted to
mount a touring version of the Darin songbook.

He recently said: "Except for jazz clubs and (appearances by) a few of the
greats who are still out there on tour, we don't live in a world where you go to
a nightclub and you get dressed up and you watch somebody sing their guts out
for two hours and entertain an audience. The days of Sammy Davis (news) Jr. are
gone. And I think Bobby, next to Sammy Davis Jr., was the greatest nightclub
entertainer we had."
