I just looked at the Bear Family Records site, and I don't see anything like
this for Bobby Darin.

There are seven biographies:
1.Bobby Darin. The Incredible Story of an Amazing Life by Al Diorio (reprint
2004). Originally published as Borrowed Time in 1986, this is the oldest and
probably most reliable bio esp. about his early life and the one where his
"sister" spilled the beans about being his mother.
   2. That's All. Bobby Darin on Record, Stage and Screen by Jeff Bleil (revised
and expanded edition 2004). This is an authoritative and comprehensive
evaluation by peers, critics and those in the music industry about darin's
career and legacy. Compulsory reading really. If you want to buy just one book,
buy this one.
   3. Dream Lovers. by Dodd Darin. a memoir about his parents.(1994)
4.Me and Bobby D by Steve Karmen.(2003) A memoir by the friend Bobby Darin
left behind on his way to the top. Somewhat bitter but an excellent evocation of
the early days, before he hit the bifg time.
5.Bobby Darin Was A Friend Of Mine. by Al Aronowitz. (2004). The author was a
prominent rock journo and the book is mainly a compilation of interviews with BD
over the years. Aronowitz has an excellent writing style and often quotes Darin
verbatim which is what brings this book to life. However this is a self
published book, very hard to come by (try e-bay) and is in dire need of decent
editing as there is much repetitions.
   6. Roman Candle. The Life of Bobby Darin. by David Evanier (2004). Very
sloppily (and probably hurriedly) written bio to coincide with the release of
Spacey's movie. The info is mostly culled from previous publications. Notable
only for unearthing some salacious titbits. Again there is much repetition.
However, this is the only book available in UK bookshops.
   7. Bobby Darin. A Life. by Michael Starr. (2004). Again very little original
material or interviews. But kinda BD for Beginners.

In addition there are two documentary biopics available on DVD.
   1. Bobby Darin: Beyond The Song. PBS documentary 1998
   2. Bobby Darin: I Want To Be A Legend. A&E Biography Channel documentary
available as part of the Songmakers Collection

Lots and Lots on YouTube if you do a BD search.

Whew! That should keep you busy for a while. It certainly has me.

Well, if I were going to give some books to a friend to learn about Darin, I
guess I would start with Dodd Darin's book, Dream Lovers, which is about both
of his parents. From there I would move on to That's All, Bobby Darin on
record, stage and screen by Jeff Bleiel, which goes into Darin's
recording/acting/songwriting careers in great detail.

Wild, Cool & Swingin' is nice, you can look at the tracks on Amazon. There
are many things on there that on Rhino, but it has a version of a song called
Gyp the Cat, written by Darin, that I like a lot. Love Swings is another

thanx for that. I've just got into Bobby Darin after seeing the Kevin
Spacey movie which i loved. I was very impressed with Spacey's
performance. I brought the set as I want a good cross the board
compilation and this was seemed to fit the bill. Has anyone got any
other reccomendations?

Chris

Oh yes, I adore the Rhino boxed set, there were many things on there that
were unreleased at the time that it came out, and I love the booklet that comes
with it, it has some stuff about Darin you don't find anyplace else. The
ATCO stuff is on a CD called Roberto Cassotto, Rare, Rockin' and Unreleased.
You might look on ebay to find old copies of this. Happy hunting!
