Covers Become Eclectic

Story by: Rachael Darmanin
KCRW has teamed up with Starbucks to release Sounds Eclectic: The
Covers Project, featuring performances from Sia, Rufus Wainwright, M.
Ward, and R.E.M., among others. The 15-track compilation was the
brainchild of Morning Becomes Eclectic producer Ariana Morgenstern,
who enlisted host Nic Harcourt's expertise.
"There are so many compilations out there we are constantly looking
for different ways to present," explains Harcourt. "We've got loads
of great covers, why don't we just do that? We went back through the
last eight years of studio sessions. These CDs always end up picking
themselves."
Of the collection, Harcourt's favorite is the opening track, Girls In
Hawaii's cover of Neil Young's "Out On The Weekend," with M. Wards'
take on David Bowie's "Let's Dance" a close second. "I like when
artists completely reinvent songs," he explains. "But I like them
all, I really do. I'm very proud of all the songs and hopefully
people can be challenged to listen to this album from beginning to
end."
Sounds Eclectic: The Covers Project will be sold exclusively at
select Starbucks locations beginning March 13. A portion of the sales
will help digitize KCRW's music library.
