The Bone Doctor gets a theatre organ!   Message List

Hi, Folks.

The Bone Doctor here with a prescription.

As we all know, the organ gets its wonderful sweetness when the sound
travels around the room it is in. The more live the room is, the
better the organ will sound.

So, doesn't it make sense to put the microphones in a location that
captures this wonderful sweetness?

We have been recording all kinds of musical instruments for going on
thirty years and I can certainly tell you that if you want the organ
to sound great on tape or hard drive, you have to put the mics in a
spot that captures the ambiance of the room, not near the speakers.

The only time we ever mic a speaker is if some hot-shot guitar guy
comes in with his Marshall or Super Reverb Fender, etc. The organ has
to bloom and interact with the room. Record it that way and you will
be thrilled with the result.

Place the mics on sturdy tall stands so that you get a good stereo
spread in your headphones. THis takes some trial and error to get
right. Then, once the levels are set, take off the phones and play
the dickens out of it.

When you are recording, give yourself plenty of headroom, especially
if you use a computer. Keep the signal at about -10dB. Why? This
gives you room to process the signal during the mastering phase, when
bass is straightened out and sheen is added along with more reverb if
needed.

After the signal has been mastered, you need to normalize it to
0.03dB below zero. This makes the track incredably loud. Then, no
matter what you play it back on, it will sound great.

I hope this helps all the future organ stars out there get results.

God bless and happy playing.
