Danish singer King Diamond (MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND) has issued the
following update:

"As you all know, 80% of the original MERCYFUL FATE lineup (vocalist King
Diamond, guitarist Hank Shermann, guitarist Michael Denner and bassist Timi
Hansen) re-recorded with present MF drummer Bjarne T. Holm two ultimate MERCY
classics for the upcoming Metallica: Guitar Hero game.

"For those who aren't into gaming, it's interesting to know that those two songs
('Evil' and 'Curse Of The Pharaohs') will be released on iTunes round mid-April.
Also interesting to know that Andy La Rocque [KING DIAMOND] mastered these two
tracks for a possible EP-picture, released by Metal Blade and Massacre.

"At this moment we are working on both MERCYFUL FATE and KING DIAMOND DVDs. Both
releases will contain two DVDs and it will be worth the wait as it has some very
exclusive content which surely no one outside the band has ever seen.

"We have been working on the following concerts. Please note content of the DVDs
might change. Concerts mentioned here might after all not appear on the DVD.

"MERCYFUL FATE DVD:

* Copenhagen 1982 with Benny Petersen
* Amsterdam Paradiso 1984
* Copenhagen 1984
* Reunion MF 1993
* Roskilde Festival 1994
* Copenhagen 1995

"KING DIAMOND DVD:

* Washington 1986
* 1987 supporting MOTÖRHEAD
* Show footage 1989 USA + backstage footage
* Full 1990 concert Spain Euro Conspiracy tour
* Behind the scenes 1990 Conspiracy
* Copenhagen concert in the park 1990 with 5 cameras

"Also remastered KING DIAMOND CDs are in the works. Those albums have, next to
the new masters, also one or two bonus video tracks. The bonus tracks shouldn't
be the reason to buy the albums. The sound is so much better than it ever was.
That should be reason to buy it. I know I would buy them.

"Remastered CDs released with video bonus footage (might be one or two songs)

* The Spider's Lullabye
* The Graveyard
* House Of God
* Voodoo

"This coming autumn might be the time to start writing new songs for KING
DIAMOND, and who knows if our involvement in Guitar Hero will raise our value to
the record labels enough for a new MERCYFUL FATE record."

Guitar Hero is a ton of fun, I have II & III, great mixture of old classic hard
rock/metal songs and songs by newer metal bands. Rock Band on the other hand
seems to feature mostly pop rock music, probably due to the singing aspect and
that Guitar Hero already has the metal market cornered. I'll wait for this game
to become used so I can pick it up for under $30, I refuse to pay more then $30
for a Xbox360 game.

According to King Diamond, the master tapes for the Melissa recordings
appear to be lost (being the reason why the had to re-record Evil for
the matallica-related game).

If that is the case, anyone has an idea of what tapes were actually
used for the Roadrunner remasters series and 25th Anniversary issues?

Danish singer King Diamond (MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND) has issued
the following update:

"So the black cat is out of the bag.

August 2008, just before the Ozzfest, Lars Ulrich called me with a
very unique suggestion. He was inviting MERCYFUL FATE to be a part of
METALLICA's and Activision's Guitar Hero: Metallica videogame. Of
course I was immediately interested, it would be such an honor to be
part of such a project. Lars requested that we find the original
masters for either 'Evil' or 'Curse of the Pharaohs' and gave me a
contact person, Scott McDaniel at Activision, to whom we should send
these master tapes. I called Hank [Shermann, MERCYFUL FATE guitarist]
right away and gave him the interesting news and asked him if he had
any idea if the master tapes for the 'Melissa' album might still be at
the old studio in Copenhagen or whether that studio might have sent
the masters to Roadrunner in Holland way back when. I called
Roadrunner New York to ask them if they knew where the masters might
be. The big search went so far that Hank went to the old owner of the
Danish studio to look through his private cellar since the studio
(Easy Sound Recording) had been shut down more than 10 years ago. All
searches came back negative.

"Couldn't believe our bad luck. I had to call Scott at Activision with
the bad news but when I suggested that we might be able to get most of
the original band members to re-record a brand new version of the
songs, his response was extremely positive. The only problem was that
Activision needed these masters within three weeks, so you can say all
hell broke loose.

"Then I went back to Hank with this suggestion and we started trying
to figure out how to do this in such short time. Hank said he would
give Michael Denner [guitar] and Timi Hansen [bass] a call to see what
they would say.

"Since none of us had heard Kim Ruzz play drums since 1985, and
running out of time before we had even started, it became too risky to
entertain this unknown scenario. We simply had to play it safe. Too
much was at risk here. Therefore it was natural to ask Bjarne T. Holm
who has actually been the drummer on most of the MERCYFUL FATE albums,
including the latest, '9'. Bjarne has kept himself in top form by
participating in all kinds of different projects, so we knew he could
do it no problem whatsoever. Same scenario goes for Michael Denner,
and he got back to me and Hank within a day with a big YES. Regarding
Timi Hansen, he supposedly has not played any significant bass for the
past 15 years, and has not owned a bass for the past 10 years. BUT,
like Michael Denner, he's an absolute natural and when he came back to
us with a big YES as well, we knew we had a shot at it.

"Hank made all the arrangements and booked some time for the following
week in Earplug Studios in Copenhagen where all the musical tracks
would be laid down. Then hardcore rehearsal started, Hank and Bjarne
worked on all rhythm at the rehearsal studio, Michael Denner worked at
home picking out every single note from his old solos. Timi could only
listen at home since he was not in possession of a bass guitar.

"This was the time when I had the second call from Lars inviting me to
join METALLICA on stage at Ozzfest for the entire 'Mercyful Fate
Medley'. We also invited Hank but he could not attend due to the fact
that he would have to be in the studio recording.

"Recording started with rhythm guitars and drums and then it was
Timi's turn. Hank told me that Timi had arrived at the studio without
a bass and Hank pointed out that the studio had an old Gibson he could
try out. Timi grabbed the bass and playing with his special
finger-plucking technique, both songs were laid down to tape and
perfectly so, only 5 hours later. Like I said, he's an absolute
natural. Hadn't lost a beat.

"Next, Hank started working on his solos laying them down note for
note like the originals, with very few exceptions. These exceptions
were made to enhance the old solos. It sounds so fucking aggressive.
Perfect job.

"In comes Michael Denner to recreate all of his original solos. They
are all note for note, bend for bend, absolutely identical feel, but
with a better sound than back then. Just amazing.

"With all the music in place, and in my mind sounding better and way
more brutal than the old recordings, it was my turn. I went in to
Nomad Recording Studio here in Dallas, Texas, approximately one week
after the Ozzfest and worked with my favorite engineer J.T. Longoria,
recreating all of the old vocals.

"It was such a thrill to be back in the studio again. My back didn't
allow me to do my preferred six-hour sessions, so we just cut the
sessions in half, spending about 3-4 hours every recording day. It was
very interesting picking out the various harmony melodies that had
been done 25 years earlier and then try to recreate them in the right way.

"Next, J.T. Longoria and I mixed the two songs at Nomad in this quite
unique way, which is necessary for a videogame. Meaning, these special
stem-mixes where each instrument, drum, cymbal, whatever, each has its
own stereo track. Also, we were not allowed to master these songs
ourselves. It had to be done by Activision in order to fit all their
criteria.

"We got the two songs off to Activision a day before the deadline, and
they loved it. They decided to use 'Evil' over 'Curse of the
Pharaohs', but I can guarantee you that 'Curse' turned out just as
brutal as 'Evil'. 'Evil' was, in the end, a better song for the
playability of the game.

"In the meantime, I had been notified by Lars that METALLICA had been
given the opportunity to have two animated playable character guests
in the game. As it has now been revealed publicly, these two guests
are Lemmy and myself. I was asked to fly to California in order to be
filmed with these special motion capture suits on, the same way that
METALLICA was doing it. Here came the next challenge. My back would
not have been able to handle a plane ride at that time, so what now?
Scott McDaniel at Activision assured me that this would really not be
a problem since their developers have handled these kind of issues before.

"Since the developers were in possession of our latest KING DIAMOND
video 'Give Me Your Soul' and had the footage from the Ozzfest, plus a
bunch of still photos I sent them, they said they had what they needed
to create my animated character. It was amazing to see each stage of
the development of this animated King Diamond. Along the road they
asked for closeup photos of the rings, the eye necklace, and certain
other items I wear on stage, so we got that to them and believe me,
ALL THE DETAILS ARE THERE. I've even had the opportunity to see the
animated King Diamond actually move with the music, and it's fucking
eerie how detailed the developers were able to create me, crossbone
mike and all.

"I noticed on various websites that there has been a few questions
about the makeup. For a game, this big in stature, you end up having
to compromise a little here and there. Upside down crosses on the face
was not quite acceptable. Actually, any kind of cross painted on the
face might have had a sense of 'blasphemy' to some of all the business
partners involved in this big venture. The same goes for the upside
down cross necklace.

"I do think though that under the circumstances the compromise we
ended up doing works great for everyone. It's definitely King Diamond
and I actually modified the makeup myself once I was told. I simply
erased the crosses and modified the eye makeup to more resemble the
old-style MERCYFUL FATE makeup. BUT rest assured the makeup with the
crosses is THE makeup for KING DIAMOND nowadays and that goes for
MERCYFUL FATE too. These days I see KING DIAMOND with the cross makeup
as being the singer of KING DIAMOND and MERCYFUL FATE and should not
have to change this favorite makeup of mine for future MERCYFUL FATE
purposes.

"Regarding the upside down cross necklace, I think we found a perfect
replacement when we exchanged it for 'The Eye' necklace. I would
personally have preferred the cross makeup, but I am totally satisfied
with what we all came up with.

"All in all, this has been an amazing experience to work with so many
talented people, every single one of them just so pro and cool. For my
part, I mostly dealt with Scott McDaniel and it's been a pure pleasure.

"Sooooooooo. Hank Shermann, Michael Denner, Timi Hansen, King Diamond
and Bjarne T. Holm re-recorded 'Evil' for the Guitar Hero: Metallica
videogame, August 2008. This lineup also recorded 'Curse of the
Pharaohs' in that same session. We will make both of these songs
available to all of you on iTunes. First though, we have to master
them. We will start that process shortly. I can't give you an exact
date for when they will be available at this point, but it should
definitely be before the summer. I can't emphasize enough how fucking
amazing they both turned out, but as I said, you will get the chance
to judge for yourself in the near future.

"So this was the full story behind what I've described as big news for
quite a while, I hope you find these news as encouraging as we,
MERCYFUL FATE, do ourselves.

"I'll check around on the Internet and see if I can clarify any
questions you might have.

"Major thanks and hail to METALLICA and Activision for letting us be a
part of this totally new adventure for us."

METALLICA has confirmed that King Diamond (MERCYFUL FATE, KING
DIAMOND) will appear as a playable character in the "Guitar Hero:
Metallica" game, due in stores this spring.

Fans, stagehands and groupies alike will have the opportunity to shred
and drum with or wail as the digital King Diamond during performances
of "Evil". The song, which originally was recorded in 1983 and is one
of the MERCYFUL FATE songs that comprise METALLICA's "Mercyful Fate"
medley, was re-recorded by four of the five original band members for
Guitar Hero: Metallica. The recording session was overseen by
guitarist Hank Shermann in the band's native Denmark; after which King
Diamond laid down his vocals in Dallas, Texas, and mixed the song with
J.T. Longoria.

Commented King: "It's been absolutely amazing to be a part of this
Guitar Hero experience. It was quite a trip to re-record the [MERCYFUL
FATE] song 'Evil' almost 25 years after the original recording took
place. The end result with four out of the five original musicians
turned out so much better than I would ever have hoped for. Seeing my
animated character take form was totally eerie in a very good way.
It's so strange to see yourself animated in such perfect detail —
cross bone microphone, Eye necklace and all. This game looks and
sounds METAL all the way. HORNS UP!!!"

Also appearing as a playable character in the "Guitar Hero: Metallica"
game is MOTÖRHEAD frontman Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister.

Gamers will have the option to either watch Lemmy's in-game likeness
as he hammers away at his bass and sings in his signature,
whiskey-drenched vocals, or they can step into his cowboy boots and
learn to play MOTÖRHEAD's 2008 re-recorded version of the band's
biggest hit, the anthemic "Ace of Spades".

"It's great to be in 'Guitar Hero' with all these famous people and
I'm really pleased to be in it with METALLICA," Lemmy said, "but
[frontman] James [Hetfield] is still taller than me."

METALLICA and MOTÖRHEAD have long enjoyed a mutual admiration of one
another's work, as METALLICA once played seven MOTÖRHEAD covers under
the moniker THE LEMMYS.

MOTÖRHEAD picked up its first Grammy in 2005 in the "Best Metal
Performance" category for the band's cover of METALLICA's "Whiplash",
which was featured on "Metallic Attack: Metallica - The Ultimate
Tribute" album.

MERCYFUL FATE will be remembered for its unquestionable mark on the
history of metal with its innovative sound, complex arrangements,
memorable melody, and its influence on bands that later took the genre
to new heights.

In 1998, METALLICA paid tribute to MERCYFUL FATE by recording a medley
of classic MERCYFUL FATE songs on the album "Garage Inc." Entitled
"Mercyful Fate", the medley included parts from "Satan's Fall", "Curse
of the Pharaohs", "A Corpse Without Soul", "Into the Coven" and "Evil".

Lars Ulrich of METALLICA (a fellow Dane) played drums on a new version
of MERCYFUL FATE's "Return of the Vampire" on the "In the Shadows"
album, which came out in 1993.

King Diamond (real name: Kim Bendix Petersen; KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL
FATE) has issued the following update:

"As it might have come to your attention by now, MERCYFUL FATE will be
a part of Guitar Hero: Metallica with the song 'Evil'. This is part of
the surprise I have earlier mentioned, but it's only a small part of
the surprise. Full details will follow when permitted.

"Regarding the DVD projects, I am currently working on the KING
DIAMOND DVD projects myself, with Livia's [King Diamond's 24-year-old
Hungarian wife] help on programming.

"It's really beginning to shape up, but as I'm sure some of you
already know, I am faced with a very steep learning curve. We're
dealing with very long files (five-camera, multi-camera edit for the
one-hour, 35-minute long Copenhagen show from 1990), and editing is
very time-consuming.

"As I mentioned, my back is continuously getting better, but five
hours in front of the computer per day is the limit. We ARE working on
this every single day, but it's impossible to estimate a release date
at this point.

"Right now this KING DIAMOND DVD is the top priority to get finished.

"Next will be to find and optimize at least one bonus video clip for
each of the four remastered KING DIAMOND albums: 'Spider's Lullabye',
'The Graveyard', 'Voodoo' and 'House Of God'. THEN, we focus on doing
the MERCYFUL FATE DVD. Once the MERCYFUL FATE DVD has been delivered
to the record labels, I plan to invest in much better songwriting
equipment and start working on new KING DIAMOND/(MERCYFUL FATE???)
material, and then we go from there.

"The knowledge gained from working on these DVD projects myself, will
hopefully come in very handy with regards to creating exciting bonus
material for upcoming albums (such as story narrating in full makeup
like on 'The Puppet Master', footage from songwriting sessions, studio
sessions, etc; all in all, some special insight into what goes on
behind these walls, these thick black walls stuffed with demons and
Grandmas... stop stop... I gotta stop... you get the picture).

"This is the best update I can give you at this point.

"Sorry for not being able to give you the full scope of our
participation in the Guitar Hero: Metallica video game at this point."

MF - Melissa - a timeless classic. What can one say - it has it all - the
riffage, classical vocals including enough mid-range, imagery, atmosphere, and
appropriate production.

KD - The Eye - for the glorious Baroqueness. Andy at his best, I think, and
paired with the most fitting partner on the other guitar.

let's try to get a better conversation going here. what's is your

favorite Mercyful or king diamond cd & why.

as for me best Mercyful is Melissa, that's a great cd. I'll say 2 of my

favorites are: Black Funeral, Curse Of The Pharaohs

as for king diamond solo I'll go with Abigail and the 2 best on that

for me are: The Possession, Black Horsemen.

so now let's see what others have to throw in here.

Ok, funny, but some of us are smart enough to do that without breeding like
rabbits. Two separate issues there.

let's try to get a better conversation going here. what's is your
favorite Mercyful or king diamond cd & why.

as for me best Mercyful is Melissa, that's a great cd. I'll say 2 of my
favorites are: Black Funeral, Curse Of The Pharaohs

as for king diamond solo I'll go with Abigail and the 2 best on that
for me are: The Possession, Black Horsemen.

so now let's see what others have to throw in here.

King Diamond (real name: Kim Bendix Petersen; KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL
FATE) has released a statement in response to an article that was
published late last month on the Danish web site BT.dk which focused
primarily on King's relationship with his 24-year-old Hungarian wife
Livia Zita.

King, who is 52 years old, says: "I'm writing this in order to set the
facts straight with regards to the interview I did for a Danish
newspaper just before Christmas.

"When I read the article it became obvious that this particular
journalist had an agenda of his own. At least half the article was
false, twisting the facts to suit his 'agenda.'

"First of all, Livia and I have no plans for having kids in the near
future. We certainly love kids but it doesn't fit in our working
schedule at this point. I don't know where the journalist got this
thing from, but we do appreciate all the nice words you had regarding
this subject even though it's not true. Also, Livia and I do not look
forward to Christmas like little kids every year. It's a cozy time,
sure, but again the journalist's choice of words are completely twisted.

"Just for your info, the Christmas tree in the picture [see below] is
THE ONLY Christmas decoration inside or outside our house and it stays
up year round cause I don't want to bother taking it down and it looks
pretty cool. Check the goat skull right next to the tree. I can see
that if I open the door to my private life just a tiny bit, things
quickly get twisted out of context, and that's why in the past I have
always kept my private life and business very separate.

"The second rumour that's floating around, which is that MERCYFUL FATE
has started writing new material, I really have no idea where it
originated from.

"The present status of MERCYFUL FATE remains unchanged, meaning that
we have not started writing new material. For that to happen, MERCYFUL
FATE's recording contracts have to be renegotiated first. We certainly
would love for this to happen so that we can finally make our
long-overdue 'masterpiece. ' Both Hank [Shermann, MERCYFUL FATE
guitarist] and I are ready to go if that scenario presents itself, and
who knows, that might happen this year.

"So... for this year, you will see a double DVD of old private KING
DIAMOND video recordings and a double DVD of old private MERCYFUL FATE
video recordings which I am working on as we speak. Andy [La Rocque,
KING DIAMOND guitarist] has finished remastering 'The Graveyard',
'Spider's Lullabye', 'Voodoo', and 'House of God', all of which should
also be available this year. And then there is 'the big surprise' (not
little King babies with horns on their foreheads or MERCYFUL FATE
writing new songs, at least not as we speak) but something that could
lead to renegotiations of the MERCYFUL FATE recording deals. We'll
see. Be patient.....

"On a personal note, I do feel reasonably confident that the MERCYFUL
FATE masterpiece will see the light of day."

According to Denmark's TV 2 VIP, King Diamond has told BT.dk that
there is a good chance that a new studio album from his classic heavy
metal act MERCYFUL FATE will surface at some point in the
not-too-distant future.

"Hank [Shermann, guitar] has written songs [for the proposed MERCYFUL
FATE CD]. And he is ready for our new masterpiece," King Diamond is
quoted as saying.

MERCYFUL FATE's last studio album, "9", was released in 1999.

A new two-DVD set of archival MERCYFUL FATE footage is tentatively due
this spring.

Online Now Online Now

Danish web site BT.dk recently conducted an interview with legendary
heavy metal singer King Diamond (real name: Kim Bendix Petersen; KING
DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE) in which he speaks about his 24-year-old
Hungarian wife Livia Zita, whom he calls his "soulmate." According to
King, who is 52 years old, he spoke to Livia for the first time when
she interviewed him over the phone for the Hungarian edition of Metal
Hammer magazine. "We got along incredibly well. And afterwards I
couldn't stop thinking about her," King says.

"We were both going through a hard time in our lives," he continues.
"And we clicked. At some point, I asked her if she would send a
photograph of herself. We had talked together for months. But I didn't
know how old Livia was… nor how she looked, and when she told me she
was 24, I simply couldn't believe it."

When asked what happened to the man who wrote a song called "A Corpse
Without A Soul" with MERCYFUL FATE in 1982, King replies, "Ahhh, our
music has only become heavier. But I admit that being in love has made
me a bit soft inside. Every day is like Christmas. I am just so much
in love with Livia."

Despite the fact that King is 28 years her senior, Livia is not
concerned. "Our ages are just numbers," she says. We are soulmates."

Regarding how their relationship developed, Livia says, "We talked at
first over the phone. Then he went to Hungary, where he, on our first
night together, proposed both in English and in German — so that my
father would understand it. I, of course, said yes. He and I are just
made for each other."

So what does the metal princess calls her heavy metal husband — King?
Kim? Prince Of Darkness?

"Haha, I call him 'baby,'" she replies. "'Cause, to me, he is not a
rock star. He is my baby."

King Diamond and Livia are not just involved in a romantic
relationship, they are also business partners. Livia is singing
backing and harmony vocals for her husband — both in the studio and
onstage. They are also working together on new songs. At the moment,
Mr. and Mrs. Diamond, who reside in Dallas, Texas, are extremely busy
compiling old MERCYFUL FATE and KING DIAMOND footage for two separate
double-DVD releases which are tentatively due this spring. At the same
time, the couple is overseeing the re-release of four remastered KING
DIAMOND albums: "Spider's Lullabye", "The Graveyard", "Voodoo" and
"House Of God".

"We're soulmates," King Diamond echoes his wife's sentiments. "I am
just so much in love."

This is my first post to the list. I am a life long Metal Head and
ex-thrash/metal drummer for 15 years.

I worked on a Metal Fanzine called DEMOLISH for many years and I have recently
been going through all of the demo tapes, interviews and such an thought I would
get some feedback from the group if anyone would be interested in maybe an
online version and or Blog about the old school metal scene.

The years covered were like 87' - 90'. Mostly the Thrash Metal, Speed Metal,
Power Metal heyday. I have hundreds of great demo tapes, many in-depth
interviews and promos that never saw the light of day due to our sponsor and
investor pulling the plug right before we went to press! I worked on the zine' a
year flying solo, and then was able to reach out and get several writers and
photographers from all over the world and excellent reviewers and or
collaborators in the following busy year.

The reason for this post is that the cover story and main interview for the
zine' was with the KING himself. I did an excellent (and very long) phone
interview when he was promoting the "Abigail" tour! We hit it off really well
and my last name is actually King, so he got a kick out of that. There are lots
of topics discussed that he never vowed to talk about again in the American
press afterwards.

I also have some great photos and I got to meet him Ohio at Bogart's for
autographs (which were originally to be given away for people who subscribed to
the fanzine).

Is there any interest in hearing the interview?

I was thinking about taking on the monumental task of re-recording the interview
(which was originally captured on CASSETTE!) and trying to re-edit and clean it
up . I may also try to get someone transcribe the interview and or type it out
for posting.

Any and all feedback is welcome. Check the link below if anyone is interested in
one of the promo posters I had. I have about 3-4 in great condition (kept. in a
poster tube and protected) and I have 3-4 that are wrinkled a bit and or not
super smooth on the front, nonetheless they ARE super rare and I am sure someone
may love to have a piece of Metal history.

Take care and thanks for keeping metal alive!

Peace,

Curt
