December 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27, 2009 + January 2 & 3, 2010 - NEW YORK CITY!
Hush Tours, Inc. and GROOVALOO Freestyle are proud to present a specially priced custom designed tour featuring current Hip Hop History and Live Dance Performance for ONE MONTH ONLY - NOW through JAN. 3rd, 2010
Hush Tours are the world's only Hip Hop experiences that use celebrity talent as the guides for every bus tour. Participants on this tour will learn about all of what's happening currently in Hip Hop - AND, will be told this information through the eyes and thoughts of one of Hip Hop's most important music historians and the host of television's Video Music Box (Ch.25), Ralph McDaniels. Founded in 2000, Hush Tours pioneers this genre with educational tours to the critical destinations past and present. For this 'custom designed' tour, a luxury motor coach will take groups through all the most important haunts in Brooklyn to give them a behind-the-scene understanding of this generation's most important recording artists - where they lived, worked, and talked about in the lyrics of their songs - including the Notorious Biggie Smalls, Jay Z, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Mos Def, Big Daddy Kane, Dana Dane and more. The tour will be capped off with a live Off Broadway Hip Hop dance theater performance of GROOVALOO Freestyle at The Union Square Theater (100 E. 17th St. New York NY). Based on the troupe's true-to-life experiences as told by the dancers who lived them, GROOVALOO is driven by intoxicating displays of physicality, a vibrant musical score and powerful spoken word poetry. The show's intertwined stories chronicle the struggles, hopes and triumphs of the 18-member cast. GROOVALOO celebrates the passion and purpose of life while revealing the heart, soul and artistry of freestyle and Hip Hop dance.
Performers in Groovaloo - Freestyle may include Bradley "Shooz" Rapier, Steven "Boogieman" Stanton, Charlie "Vzion" Schmidt, Kendra Andrews, Richard "Steelo" Vazquez, Cristina Benedetti, Jessica Rabone, Mary Jurado, John "JRock" Nelson, Bonita Lovett, Ivan "Flipz" Velez, Philip "Spee-D" Albuquerque, Gabriel Jaochico, Jaime "Venum" Burgos, Anthony Cabaero, D. Sabela "Ovasoul 7" Grimes, Jesse "Casper" Brown, Jon "DoKnock" Cruz, Oscar "Double O" Orosco and more! GROOVALOO captured the hearts of America when they were the winners of NBC's "Superstars of Dance." They have also been featured on Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", and "The Wayne Brady Show." GROOVALOO is a rare collision of theater, contemporary dance, Hip Hop and freestyle.

About this event:This event represent Petroleum Empire Media Group's (PEMG) work toward expanding the Hip Hop Lifestyle and brand to better serve our communities and local business. This event in particular is a chance to bring community together while marrying the popular HIP HOP branding with the very real issue of Families in need. from the desk of the Executive Director of the Hip Hop Culture Center in Harlem
On Nov 13th and 14th 2009, The Hip Hop Culture Center had the honor of hosting the Zulu Nations 35th Anniversary. In addition the worldwide phenomenon known as Hip Hop celebrated its 36th Birthday!
In these days of Fast Food rap music, it was dope to see The Zulu Nation serve up a healthy dose of that good old fashioned Hip Hop that was birthed in Da Bronx.
For the uninitiated you may ask yourself “What is a Zulu Anniversary about?” Well my mello let me pull your coat. Imagine if you can an event that’s part family reunion, part Hip Hop vendor bazaar, and a flashback party from Bronx River or the T-Connection. How do I know? I remember well that pre-record deal Hip Hop. Back in those glory days I was down with a crew called Touch of Class, Nice and Nasty M.C’s. Then cats called me Mexi-Ray, and I put some time in the business of yes, yes yall. I had a diddy back in 79 called The Ultimate Rap. Pumpkin, one of the best live Hip Hop drummers ever, blazed the track. So for me bumping into folks that I haven’t seen in years was a blessing. Shout out to Boston Road crew and 78 park.
Imagine seeing Black Spade members from the Jimmy Carter era in their colors reppin lovely. Picture Break dancers, of all ages, all nationalities getting it in, off of records in their pure form. I’m talking those beats that you just don’t hear on the radio. Joints like Mexican, Nautilus, Apache, Catch a Groove. Crate boys stand up. Visualize the 1 and 2’s being manipulated, scratched and cut on in ways that the good people from Technique and GLI never imagined when they were invented. Conjure in your mind the main players from the formative years of Hip Hop exchanging war stories, catching up enjoying fellowship, snapping, telling jokes all in PEACE. And yo…that was just Friday!
Now Saturday was all that and a bag of chips…
The people in the house and on stage was a Who’s Who of the Boom Bap, too many to mention. Feel free to peep the pictures on the link (http://picasaweb.google.com/h2c2culture/ZuluNation35thAnniversary#). My three favorite moments were…

This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast
with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the week of November 17, 2009 with
some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary.
We touched base on the current 1 week national U.S. boycott of
non-Black owned Beauty Supply stores and how that ties into what Prof.
Robinson calls a constant "economic hate crime" that occurs all over
the United States to the Black Community in regards to the road blocks
in establishing one's own businesses in comparison to other ethnic
groups, the exchange of money within the community and other things
here and there!
There are new episodes of Black Agenda Report and Direct EFX segments this week.

Since
the creation of Hip-Hop, emcees, rappers, producers, graffiti artists,
DJs and fans have all contributed their talents to the culture. With
their talents comes reckless behavior.
It plagues thousands upon thousands of Entertainers, Athletes and Business Professionals worldwide.
What is it?
COONERY!
Coonery is one of the more lethal Pandemics of the 21st century among African Americans.
The
shucking and jiving of many African American talents within Hip-Hop,
the Entertainment Industry and their fans has gradually overwhelmed the
airwaves, television screens and the streets.
Many of our
younger generation are Swag Surfin along to music videos rather than
learning, enjoying & appreciating knowledge about the originators
of Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz and other forms of Black/Urban Music (much
less being exposed to current people on the entertainment scene).
"Who You Gonna Call? to stop the buffoonery in the entertainment industry? COONBUSTERS!
The COONBUSTERS campaign
of upcoming anti-iCoonery T-Shirt designs and mixtapes was a
collaboration initiated by DJ Fusion and the Fresh Connection Designs
Clothing Company (http://www.FreshConnectionDesigns.com)
since the acceptance of ego tripping in the public eye, showing off
rented jewelry and homes on TV and doing ridiculous dances became the
new lifestyle.
The buffoonery acts of rappers, entertainers and athletes will cease with the COONBUSTERS line of T-Shirts.

The Street's MC That's Next Up From Florida: M. Beezy - FREE DOWNLOADS!
M. Beezy aka Mr. 850 Ghetto Super Star
Biography:
From the bottomless 808 bass
drops of 80s pioneers MC Shy D and MC A.D.E to the freaky forays of 2
Live Crew and Poison Clan right down to the thugged-out rhymes of Trick
Daddy, Plies and Rick Ross, the state of Florida has played an
instrumental role in the development of southern rap music.
Combining all of his past and
present musical influences from the Sunshine State, Tallahassee native
M. Beezy crafted a style equal to no other and has garnered a strong
regional following over the past few years.
With 12 mixtapes, two DVDs and
upcoming release of straight-to-DVD movie Chain Reaction featuring
Miami boss Rick Ross already under his belt, M. Beezy readies for the
upcoming release of debut album Self Employed. And the streets have
been talking about his lead single What We Got and accompanying DVD
Ghetto Superstar Part 3.
Music is life. You go to the club
sometimes. It gets gangsta sometimes. Sometimes it gets hard. Sometimes
it gets crazy, explains M. Beezy. You got to have every element in
music as well as life. So I make music like my life goes.
Born Mike Burgess in west Tallahassees grueling Holton Street
Projects, Beezy is the youngest male child of four brothers and eight
sisters. Although he learned most of his lifes lessons in the streets,
all of his brothers served time in the penitentiary after being caught
on the wrong side of the law- except Beezy.
My family was
in the streets. So when I got older, it was like my turn to follow in
my brothers footsteps. It was a family thing, says Beezy. I got all
of my game and knowledge from the streets but I survived it. He
continues, After a bunch of big investigations on me, a lot of false
statements made against me and being blessed by God to get by, I knew
it was time to take this music seriously. Once I started getting
feedback from my music and able to eat off of it, it was a wrap.
In 2004, he dropped his first big local hit, What They Do, which
featured then-emerging R&B talent T-Pain and swept through north
Florida like wildfire. The following year, Beezy ran his region crazy
with release of his mixtape debut, 850 Ghetto Superstar.
And every three months, a series
of mixtapes including Im Back, Look at All These Haters and Choppers
Gone Wild followed. The recently released twelfth installment, Its My
Turn, was hosted by famed Florida DJ Bigga Rankin, which also came with
a free DVD.
All my life I loved music. But I got into the
music because I didnt feel my city was represented the right way,
Beezy informs. A lot of artists were making music but wasnt hearing
Tallahassee in their songs. So I had to get into the game and let them
know we got talent in Tallahassee.
And he intends to do just that
with the Spring release of debut album Self Employed and accompanying
DVD Ghetto Superstar Part 3. Directly following the albums release,
Beezy is set to drop straight-to-DVD movie Chain Reaction co-starring
Rick Ross.
My music is a big emotion. My music might make
you want to cry, tell your momma you love her, says Beezy. It might
make you want to do something to somebody who owes you money. It might
make you want to jump around the club and have a good time. My music is
real life.

Check out photos from Joe Conzo, Francisco Reyes, Res One, Fabel and more plus video clips from Mark Carranceja at myspace.com/toolsofwar
Co-founded by Jorge "Fabel" Pabon and Christie Z-Pabon, Tools of War was named with the idea that there are many "tools" one can use in competing or battling within Hip Hop culture: turntables, paint, microphones, one's body, and especially one's voice (and so on). Although the name may appear aggressive, the intent behind it's use is actually to inform and educate people regarding not only Hip Hop but many other social and political issues. As we grow, we are finding that it has also become a forum for voicing opinions and sharing ideas which might help in unifying and uplifting people all over the world. Please read our individual bios at myspace.com/Toolsofwar.

"HOW HIP HOP GUIDES GLOBAL CONSCIOUSNESS"
I was informed by Brother Rashid there were still some vending spots available; setup time is 1:30p; so suggest you get here even earlier to carve out your spot on "Black Wall Street."
FLYIN' CUT SLEEVES, completed in 1993, is a 59:44 minute videotape documentary which presents alternating portrayals, from the past (twenty years ago) and the present, of former street gang presidents in the Bronx: Benjamin "Yellow Benjy" Melendez, The Ghetto Brothers, Ben Buxton, The Savage Nomads, Nelly "China" Velez, The Savage Nomad Girls, Felipe "Blackie" Mercado, The Savage Skulls and Lorine Padilla.
Blackie - Savage Skulls
The project grew out of the experiences of Rita Fecher, the videotape's co-producer, who taught in a South Bronx school in the late 1960's and early 1970's, became intimately involved with the gangs, their leaders, and the leaders' families and began to document their lives. Their world was the streets, set against a backdrop of uprooted families, cultural alienation, drugs and violence. Neighborhood teenagers responded by organizing into street groups known to the members as "families", but labeled in the most alarming terms as violent gangs by the press.
When Rita Fecher returned after twenty years to see what had become of her old friends, she found that they had stayed in the community of their youth, that they were deeply committed to improving conditions there and that they were engaged in helping their own children survive in the hazardous street environment. Each of them has fought to learn how to function more effectively in American society through continuing education within colleges and educational systems connected to the prison system, in New York City colleges and universities and on-the-job training. They have chosen careers, studies, or community activities in areas of youth and drug counseling, recreation and self-defense.
In fact, the "families" had a stabilizing effect, enabling the youths to cope with their troubled environment and providing their young leaders with a means of exercising authority. The political climate at the time, movements of national liberation and such organizations as the Black Panthers and Young Lords Party influenced the young gang leaders to aspire to be more than warriors and to become, to some degree, a positive force in their communities.
It is their fervent hope that this documentary will help them to bring attention to the problems faced by them and to their own unique efforts to overcome them. The documentation of these lives over a twenty year period offers a remarkable perspective on life in the ghetto (spanning four generations), and the means that people devise to cope from the time that they are children to when they serve as parents and role models for a new generation.

I found a great trick that works well to crank out rap beats. Make your own
beats fast and easy with a trick that will enable any producer to produce
bangers on call. I rotate four different styles every time I make one. For
example, the first beat I make will be a club banger. I start the club bangers
with the drums. A simple snare to bass pattern, then I switch to a high pitched
xylophone for the melody. I'm done, instant club banger, and it's no joke.
The next one I crank out is a west coast beat. it has a straight forward 2 kick
drum pattern and then I do a synth bass that goes along with the kick drums.
Next, after Im done with the synth bass, I add a sine lead as a little melody.
After that? All that is left are a few piano chords. Instant Crenshaw mafia
worthy. Next, an East coast beat. East coast beats are much more repetitive,
generally speaking, maybe it has to do with the fact that they have the heavy
sample elements, like when Dj Premier uses the MPC1000 or when RZA takes a
straight forward rock beat and adds a crazy woman screaming on top of it. I can
either do the sample first, and then the drums, or vice versa. Whatever I do, I
make sure that its going to be banging, tight, and makes sense melodically.
My last beat is a dirty south beat, and this is where I really go all out and
come up with alot of layers. Sure the beat is simple, but It's slow and has very
fast 16th notes on the hi hat. I put a charm on top, illustrating the minor key
it's in, then I go all out with the low synth that sounds like death. This is
where things get really intense, because i know i can start the beat out at the
beginning with the drum beat and the charm, but then after 4 bars I drop that
low death synth and the fast hi hat comes in with the synth as well.
Everyone has their own way of doing it, but I love performing in succession like
that. One style to the next. I guess its great because it keeps me inspired and
I don't "get tired" of any one style, they never grow old, and I keep it going.
I use SP alot to do my beats. I guess because they give you all you need and
when everything is said & done, it sounds like you have 50 keyboards or
something. In this day & age I keep thinking that real hardware might die
out, and I guess the only reason why anyone would want to stick with one machine
is because they want to utilize their piano skills. I actually have alot of
skills on piano after studying at Manhattan school of music as a youth, but I
still go with SP because I'm in the studio, I'm not behind a Bosendorfer playing
Chopin.

The name of our signature hip hop class was created to honor one of our favorite childhood cereals 'Rice Crispy's tagline 'Snap, Crackle, Pop'.
The name was created before the structure of the class was formed. The fact that the name 'Snap' coincides with my dance name SnapShot and 'Pop' with WandeePop is all divine rhythm. So people can stop asking who is 'Lock' LOL
Using 'Lock' was the perfect style to include in the name because it was the Funk Styles we wanted to teach in conjunction with our hip hop party dancing. But we are NOT masters of Locking. We have learned Locking Basics from the creator Don Campbellock, as well as Skeeter Rabbit (RIP), Jazzy Jay & Sugar Pop. But our initial Locking influences are Mr. Wiggles and PopMaster Fable before we had the women's influence in Breakin 1&2 with Loli Pop and Original Locker Toni Basil. So for those who want to learn the Funk Style of Locking please follow one of these instructors, as well as Shabba Doo, Original Locker.
Locking is not a major part of our class structure, but we do perform Locking drills to help with Points, Wrist Rolls, Angles, Locks & Scoops.
WandeePop and I only want to teach what we learned growing up in the Bronx too keep the authenticity of who we are, which is why we are officially changing the name to Snap, Pop & Rock. We are pioneer BGirls in the 80's Hip Hop Party Dancing Style with a taste of Rocking.
Latin Rocking is the original style from the Bronx that we rocked in the jams. We just loved to get down. As well as top rocking. It derives from Latin Inspired Dances such as: Rumba, Salsa, Samba and Mambo.
We are currently changing all Logos and Promotional Materials and will debut the NEW logo soon.

Overcoming Emotional Eating
By SnapShot
I was watching the Janet Jackson interview on Wednesday Evening and she talked about her challenges with her weight and her bouts with emotional eating. It's a very serious topic for many people, including myself. Maybe you can relate to those boring, lonely, late nights with leftovers and snacks before you go to bed to deal with the void, hurt, depression. Well you are NOT alone and here are a few tips on recognizing the pattern. First, you have to recognize the unhealthy behavior.
Know your triggers. You have to know which moods send you
to the cookie jar before you can do anything about it. Once you know your
triggers, have a list of alternate things to do when the mood strikes. For example, read a book, go for a walk or find an online support group.
Quiz yourself. Determine if you're really hungry or eating
for other reasons. "I'll ask myself 'Do you really need this, or is it something
else, like boredom?" About 80% of the time it's not hunger.
Call a friend. Talking about what's bothering you can keep
you from eating.
Challenge the power of food. Ice cream is a poor companion
if you're lonely. "If I eat the whole bag of chocolate chip cookies, am I going
to be any happier?
Take an emotional inventory. Ask yourself: "What do
you feel? anger? resent? fear?
regret? What are you upset about?" Talk to the
person involved, talk to others, or write a letter-even if you don't send it.

Do you know the difference between grooving to the beat of
the music, and picking up choreography?
To Groove is to have the ability to
bounce and rock while dancing, rocking is the first original freestyle form of
party dancing...
It's the main ingredient missing in alot of choreography you see today that labels themselves hip hop and it's the main difference b.w The Hip Hop Dance Culture here in NYC and anywhere else in the world.
Why do students travel to NYC from around the world? It's not to learn counts to music or even to learn How to pick up choreography.
They are in need and hungry for the Organic Essence/Flavor/Style in which this culture was created.
Back in the 70's they would rock-dance at parties all night
long), Another way of thinking about is like this to groove is to listen to
some dope hot fire music and allow your body, heart and soul move you to a
point where all you want to do is play with the beat of the music. It's simple your just dancing and getting
your vibe on. You have no counts in head or on your mind... but at the same time
you have this natural ability to rock and bounce while dancing!

As a bgirl, community activist, dance historian, writer and researcher, and always a student of hip hop culture and dance, going to Snap, Pop & Lock is a must! Coming from the South, the opportunities to learn about hip hop dance are scarce, especially first-hand. I came to New York City for a semester as a graduate student and no where have I seen the history of hip hop dance integrated so well into a movement class as Snap, Pop & Lock!
This class begins with a warm-up that combines common forms of exercise with hip hop movements, strengthening the dancer's technique by building endurance. In the second part of class, students learn the various forms, techniques, and styles of hip hop dance (which are integrated quite beautifully). Learning these foundational forms strengthens the movement quality of any dancer: from the commercially-influenced to the old school rocker. Finishing with a meditative cool-down, Snap, Pop & Lock is designed to work the mind, body, and soul.
Personally, Snap, Pop & Lock continues to teach me about my body and ways to progress as a dancer and educator. I love the incorporation of freestyle and the way it is utilized in the class setting. Freestyling is the way I (and many other hip hop dancers) communicate and allowing students to hone their freestyle within class is wonderful. Students are asked to freestyle during large or small breaks in class together, facilitating a comfortable and stable environment that encourages growth.
This concept is
good for dancers experienced in freestyling and it's great for dancers
who may be shy about beginning. The structure, in addition to the
positive energy of Snapshot and WandeePOP, allows for a level of
spirituality in class. In the past, it was hard for me to freestyle
fluently in a four walled studio with mirrors, let alone other people.
However, the musical vibe, the invitation to freestyle as a group, and
the angelic instruction of Snapshot and WandeePOP creates the feeling
of going to the club or freestyling in my room to manifest right in the
studio!

COONERY!
Coonery is one of the more lethal Pandemics of the 21st century among African Americans.
The
shucking and jiving of many African American talents within Hip-Hop,

Many of our
younger generation are Swag Surfin along to music videos rather than
learning, enjoying & appreciating knowledge about the originators
of Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz and other forms of Black/Urban Music (much
less being exposed to current people on the entertainment scene).

My music is
real life.

The order was Jazzy Jay first, followed by Red Alert and Afrika Bambaataa last. Hosted by Pop Master Fabel. [if parts sound choppy - they are because this was a 4 hour show that has been shortened.] Support The Friends of Crotona Park!
