AGNOSTIC FRONT
Live at CBGB's CD (with 2 bonus tracks with a bonus DVD)

famed CBGB's
with 19 ear-shattering classics, and now fans who may not have been able to
attend the
East Coast show can catch all the action with this release featuring the entire
set as well as
some bodacious bonus materials. After listening to the band tear through such
tracks as
"Your Mistake," "Last Warning," and "Friend or Foe," cameras take a look behind
the scenes
in a documentary entitled "Behind the Voice" and catch up with band member
Vinnie
Stigma for a rare, no-holds-barred interview. A photo gallery is also included,
and after
watching the live performance on television, fans can take the show with them
wherever
they go thanks to an additional live CD that also offers two bonus tracks. ~

FUCKED UP
Hidden World CD
FUCKED UP's first release for Jade Tree is cloaked in shades of unconventional
aesthetics,
symbolic overtones and a self-proclaimed "culture of confusion." Hidden World,
the
band's first full length studio album, marks a turning point for the mysterious
Toronto
band, transcending the boundaries of punk with melody, aggression, expansive
structures
and enigmatic diatribes on what lies underneath the immediate, visualized world.
FUCKED
UP combine confrontational ideologies with deliberate misinformation to produce
a brutal
analysis on thought provocative punk. In a word, FUCKED UP and Hidden World is
dangerous and unpredictable in a time when punk has become a manufactured
commodity.

DAS OATH
Das Oath CD
This half NY/half Netherlands hardcore punk outfit got its start in 2000. Das
Oath is a fine
balance between classic hardcore, structuralized arty noise, and 70's punk rock.
Mix the
energy of The Germs and the progressive sound of earlier Killing Joke with the
gritty noise
overload of DC's Void and the anthemic undertones of Agnostic Front and you'll
hear Das
Oath - a sound no other band comes up with in the world of loud music.

Includes both tracks from the band's self-released Unclean EP, along with two
more tracks
taken from the Dejection EP originally released by Profane Existence. Carefully
mastered

RED SPAROWES
At The Soundless Dawn CD
Red Sparowes is a Los Angeles post-rock band comprising current and former
members
of Neurosis, Isis, Halifax Pier, Angel Hair and Pleasure Forever. Their sound is
characteristic of soundscape-influenced experimental rock, with an otherwise
uncommon
extensive use of a pedal steel guitar.
This is their debut album, a double-CD pack released by Neurot.

JESU
Lifeline CDEP
"Lifeline" contains four of Justin K. Broadrick's most refined tracks of
shoegazed metallic
abandon, one of which features Swans diva of doom, Jarboe. "Broadrick's music
comes
over the stereo like its own weather pattern, an experience with more layers and
detail
than even 10 or 20 listens can trace out" - Pitchfork. "Arguably the most
influential single
figure in extreme music over the last two decades" - Popmatters.
(RM40)
JESU
Conqueror CD
Jesu returns with nearly an hour of weighty, otherworldly heaviness that
defies the default designation of metal. The opening titular cut has as much in
common
with early Pink Floyd as it does with band member Justin Broadrickís other
outfits, Napalm
Death and Godflesh. That said, there's plenty here to enrage the savage beast,
such as the
dark and detuned opening of "Old Year," the icy epic "Mother Earth" and the
recording's
centerpiece, the restless and imaginative 10-minute Flaming Lips-esque
"Weightless and
Horizontal," which displays the band's debt to space rock without apology and
without any
sacrifice of aforementioned heaviness. As good as Conqueror is, it's hardly the
band's
masterpiece. The work laid here suggests that Jesu has much more exploring and
refining
to do but this recording is as good a place as any for listeners to begin
anticipating the
moment when this outfit climbs up from the underground to reap the rich rewards
it so
clearly deserves. A fantastic and darkly inspiring work.ńńJedd Beaudoin

GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR!
Lift Your Skinny Fists 2xCD
Canada's Godspeed You Black Emperor raise the ante on their already ambitious
orchestral
rock by releasing a double CD of material as their second full-length album. The
group
combines the drums and guitar of typical rock-band instrumentation with horns
and
strings to create a music built around drones and slowly evolving melodic
figures. It rises
and falls from delicate introductory passages to unabashed grand climaxes. Their
juxtaposition of drums with violins and lush romantic tonality brings to mind
Rachel's, but
their compositional scale and the pounding repetitive intensity of their dynamic
peaks
evoke Glenn Branca's The Ascension.
Although the two discs are indexed at only two 21-minute tracks each, the
package
includes a handy road map to the movements into which each is subdivided. The
opening
piece starts with five minutes of a 15-beat circular melodic pattern that is
gradually
embellished as the volume swells to an ecstatic roar. The release drops down to
a pastoral
drone that rebuilds to support an acid-etched guitar solo, which in turn yields
to a unified
4/4 kraut rock pound that eventually explodes, leaving behind field recordings
of public
announcements mingled with wandering late-night Swell Maps piano. The other
pieces
use a similar set of sonic building blocks to take the listener on comparable
journeys.
Fans of Godspeed's previous work will be very happy, and the curious might want
to hop
on board as well. --Bob Bannister

PELICAN
City of Echoes CD
the band that brought you australasia and the fire in our throats will beckon
the thaw
(decibel magazine's album of the year for 2005) returns with opus number three,
a series
of (r) evolutionary instrumental ruminations on touring and the homogenous
effects of
globalization. with shorter songs and expanded catchiness, city of echoes is
pelican's "pop
album," according to guitarist laurent schroeder-lebec, a deftly executed
reminder that
these dudes can do whatever they feel like and still make those hairs on the
back of our
necks stand up like tiny little boners. which is a-okay by us, because whenever
lsl and
fellow guitarist trevor de brauw join forces with the now-la-based herweg
brothers--larry
(drums) and bryan (bass) --to form the ultimate instrumental quadrangle, it's
all shazzam!
and the next thing you know, they're dropping so many suckas with all those
sweet,
victorious riffs that it begins to feel like chicago in july, when everybody's
air-conditioners
simultaneously shit the bed and the old folks start piling up like logs at the
city morgue.
when the heat wave passes and the humidity subsides, the pelican dudes stand on
top of
the proverbial heap, possibly hoisting a chalice of some type--maybe even a
sword, but
not in a manowar kind of way--as the reverberations from their own amplified
gloriousness rain upon their heads (and all of our heads, really) like manna
from heaven.
amen.

SUNN O)))
Black One CD (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Sixth and darkest album yet from the Sunn0))) camp. They continue with their
collaborative efforts, inviting OREN AMBARCHI, John Weise (BASTARD NOISE), Wrest
(LEVIATHAN, LURKER OF CHALICE), and Malefic (XASTHUR, TWILIGHT). Progressive yet
primitive sub-sonic sounds from the deep.
(RM75)
KHANATE
Khanate CD (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Khanate was an extreme doom metal supergroup that brought together James Plotkin
and
Alan Dubin, two members of the defunct band OLD (AKA Old Lady Drivers), as well
as Tim
Wyskida (of Blind Idiot God and Manbyrd) and Stephen O'Malley (of Burning Witch
and
Sunn O))) fame).
Keeping some similarity to O'Malley's previous band Burning Witch, Khanate
produced
songs that usually exceeded the 10 minute mark, characterised by extremely slow
tempos,
harsh layers of feedback and vocalist Alan Dubin's torturous shrieking.
One of the most original and innovative bands in the field of doom metal,
Khanate took
fundamental elements of doom and took them to an almost abstract extreme,
creating
tension with dissonance, timing, and Plotkin's electronic effects.
Japanese limited edition issue of the classic album in a deluxe, miniaturized LP
sleeve
replica of the original vinyl album artwork.
(RM75)
KHANATE
Thing Viral (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Seriously, what kind of mind produces music like this? This is unbelivably slow,
and so far
beyond the typical "Doom" metal genre that they fall in, I don't know what to
call it. It's
also the BEST horror movie soundreack ever. Alan Dubin's vocals range from a
chilling
whisper, to a horrific scream. Check out the last track, Too Close Enough To
Touch. If you
don't feel like hiding in a corner and contemplating sucide, you are not human.
For fans of Boris, Earth, and The Melvins, this may or may not be for you. The
influences
are there, but Khanate have definetly taken these influences and made them their
own.
Listening alone at night is recommended.
(RM75)
KHANATE
Capture & Release CD (Japanese pressing with Bonus CD!)
Capture & Release was the final album (although there are rumours of another
as-of-yet
unreleased album) by the Drone doom metal band Khanate. It was released in 2005
and is
on the Hydra Head label.
The album contains only two tracks, "Capture" and "Release," both of which
provide the
album its name.

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY
All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone CD (Japanese Pressing)
Sometimes Explosions in the Sky start with a whisper and end with a scream, but
on "Birth
and Death of the Day", they begin with a scream and proceed into a symphonic
odyssey
that Aaron Copland might have composed if he'd played electric guitar. Like
Copland, EITS
are cinematic, but with more kinetic drive than any film--except maybe
Koyaanisqatsi--
could match. Compositions like "It's Natural to Be Afraid" take you on epic
journeys that
roar like a Harley Davidson one minute and slip into taut contemplation the
next, using
the slow-tension build that EITS have perfected. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
was
produced by John Congleton, who has worked with lo-fi groups like the Roots and
the
Mountain Goats. That might explain why the album lacks the atmosphere of EITS's
monumental The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place and their Friday Night Lights
soundtrack.
Instead, they rely even more on the arc of their compositions and the integral
twin lead
guitar lines that never solo but always drive the songs. They can shift from
power-chord
aggression to the sound of plucked mandolins in an instant. This is progressive
rock for
people who weren't even born when prog reigned supreme. It's the sound of King
Crimson, transmuted through punk and grunge aesthetics. --John Diliberto

DEICIDE
The Stench of Redemption CD
Many critics have praised this album as a return to form for Deicide, despite
the band
losing both Eric and Brian Hoffman, the two founding members. There is a
noticeable
change in the guitar work, as guitar leads are much more prevalent and sometimes
even
reach epic proportions (a good example being the closing cut, "The Lord's
Sedition", which
is not only the longest Deicide song to date, but also notable for the moody,
dark, clean
guitar intro). The style of the solos on the album is also drastically different
than it has
been on previous Deicide records. Ralph Santolla and Jack Owen utilize a
neo-classical
style of guitar soloing along with the traditional riffing of Deicide. Many fans
have also
noticed Glen's trademark double-tracked vocal style sounds better than it has in
years.
(RM47)
KATATONIA
Discouraged Ones CD
Now re-mastered and re-issued, here comes another classic offering from Sweden's
Katatonia in the shape of their third album from 1998. Features bonus tracks in
the shape
of 'Quiet World' & 'Scarlet Heavens'. The track 'Quiet World' comes from the
Discouraged
Ones recording session. 'Scarlet Heavens' is a rare track dating all the way
back to 1994.
'Discouraged Ones' was recorded July-August 1997 at the infamous Sunlight
Studios by
Fred Estby and Tomas Skogsberg (Entombed, Dismember, etc). The album saw a new
direction change with the epic compositions of old replaced with stripped down,
compact
structures to make room for new vocal harmonies courtesy of Jonas Renkse (who
also
played drums on the album), putting an end to the growling vocal style from
before and
giving the band a much broader appeal.
(RM47)
DEAD MEADOW
Feathers CD
Very few bands have what it takes to leaven their stoner rock with equal parts
melody and
exploratory noise. Their exhilarating fourth album, Feathers, is the DC-based
group's best
album by far, thanks in no small part to the addition of second guitarist Cory
Shane. Half
the album is so good--and so eclectic--it brings to mind the bass-heavy assault
of
classic Blue Cheer and Sabbath, the sweet confectioner's space-pop of Jack Drag
and Brian
Jonestown Massacre, and the locked groove swagger of Comets on Fire and Black
Mountain. Dead Meadow aren't afraid to melt genre conventions; "at Her Open
Door," for
instance, is very Zepp-y but trippy and sugar-y sweetóalmost like Bumble Puppy,
but way
better. "Stacy's Song" is levitating and beautiful, a reverb-saturated tune that
showcases
singer-guitarist Jason Simon's distinctive vocals. --Mike McGonigal
(RM47)
DEAD MEADOW
Dead Meadow CD
Dead Meadow are a retro stoner psych rock power trio playing fuzzed out
space-jams in a
heavy and rollicking yet still kinda mellow mode. For fans of Blue Cheer and
their fellow
Tolatta act Spirit Caravan. They're also reminiscent of a more jammed-out,
psychedelic
Sleep, but with some gentle touches -- there's even interludes of acoustic
guitar indie-
pop. This one grew on us! [See! ] It's definitely more "out-of-time" than most
other stoner
rock efforts, harking back not to the arenas of the '70s but to the garages and
hippie pads
of the late '60s. As such it stands apart from the current legions of Kyuss / Fu
Manchu
clones.
(RM47)
DEAD MEADOW
Shivering King & Others CD
Dead Meadow set a new high water mark for lunacy delivered with absolute
sincerity. More
cohesive, focussed, and mind-numbingly heavy than all their previous LPs put
together,
and that is saying alot. Like Spacemen3 and Black Sabbath getting stuck in the
Brundle
teleporter and coming out the other an improbable amalgam.

2 is a continuation of the theme and is a collection of rare and highly sought
after
recordings of classic Darkthrone songs... The DVD contains a collection of
Darkthrone's
very rare live appearances, kicking off with their only TV appearance ever - a
two song set
for Oslo TV way back in 1989... Also on the DVD is one of the only fully filmed
gigs of
Darkthrone available, filmed in Riihimaki, Finland in 1991. There are also four
tracks

in 1996.

NIHILIST
1987-1989 CD
Nihilist was only a footnote in the burgeoning Swedish death metal scene of the
late '80s,
but they were an important footnote. Four of Nihilist's members -- singer L. G.
Petrov,
guitarist Alex Hellid, bassist Johnny Hedlund, and drummer Nicke Andersson --
went on
to become members of Entombed, one of the most important bands in the history of
Nordic death metal.
The main focus of The Nihilish Demos is, as the title indicates, demos that the
short-lived
band recorded in 1988 and 1989. Nihilist never provided an official full-length
album, and
these demos are the only chance to hear what they sounded like in the studio.
Not
everything on this disc is by Nihilist -- the last three tracks are from
Entombed's But Life
Goes On demo of 1989. But Nihilist is the main focus, and their demos capture
the primal,
raw, punk-minded spirit that death metal had in the beginning. ~ Alex Henderson,

REVEREND BIZARRE
II: Crush The Insects CD
"Crush the Insects" is finally here, the second full-length album of the Finnish
True Doom
trio (yes, 2nd, do not get confused, the band considers the 74-minute long
"Harbinger of
Metal" as an extended EP, and so is the case with the 65 minute long "Return to
the
Rectory" CD full of new material that was included as a free bonus in
Spikefarm's re-issue
of their debut album; so second it is, who am I to argue?). So, how's this album
compared
to the previous releases? Well, the main difference is that the speeds have
increased. In
the past, REVEREND BIZARRE has gotten us used in ultra slow doom metal
compositions
with occasional outbreaks. In "Crush the Insects" next to the creepy torturing
slow songs
we also find faster ones, yet still very much doom metal, and of course of the
true
authentic variety (it couldn't be otherwise!). So in other words, the new album
is more
varied. - Metal Invader (RM55)
REVEREND BIZARRE
In The Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend CD
At last! Itís been a lot of time since a really good new pure doom band has
appeared.
REVEREND BIZARRE is a Finnish trio, true believers of the cult of the Holy Four
(a. k.a.
BLACK SABBATH or simply the best band in the world ever!) that have studied the
teachings of their evangelists CANDLEMASS, SAINT VITUS, THE OBSESSED, TROUBLE
and
decided to pay tribute and follow their direction. Accordingly, REVEREND BIZZARE
play old
school traditional doom. In their music purity is the key word. The best
description that I
can give about their music is the following: Imagine something like CATHEDRALís
debut
ěForest of Equilibriumî but simpler and with clean vocals. - Metal Invader

Punk is not a fashion statement. It is a way of life which is about being independent and opposing injustice.’
Marjinal has been agitating with their music and art in the outskirts of Jakarta for almost ten years. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND Safe As Milk (1967) Remastered & Expanded CD - RM50
(Buddha Records)
"I may be hungry, but I sure ain't weird," Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, famously intones on this bright-sounding re-mastered version of the 1967 debut by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Safe as Milk is a bold, tough-ass distillation of Delta blues stomp and 1960s garage-punk swagger, fused with a radically polyrhythmic and tempo-shifting style that one might term "art rock". Listening to the delightfully playful, absurdist "Abba Zabba", it's easy to see why Lester Bangs called Beefheart "the only true dadaist in rock"; the song is a good indication of the intricate, rule-breaking music the Magic Band would continue to hone. But there are also formidable ballads (the psychedelic "Autumn's Child", the lachrymose "I'm Glad"), mid-tempo pop-soul tunes (the Otis Redding-ish "Call on Me"), and straight-ahead blues-rock workouts ("Plastic Factory"), all of which showcase the fretwork of a young Ry Cooder. Much has been made of Beefheart's multiple-octave vocal range; he sings menacingly on "Dropout Boogie" and allegedly broke a very expensive microphone on the eerie "Electricity". The last seven tracks on this reissue (for the most part fascinating, unfinished instrumentals) were recorded with a different line-up; they are outtakes from Mirror Man Sessions." - Mike McGonigal
"Cornelius is big in Japan. In music-biz parlance, "big in Japan" is the ultimate backhanded compliment; it's routinely slapped on artists who are great at building small cults, but not mass audiences. But on "Fantasma," Cornelius single-handedly forces a reassessment not only of how insulting that term is, but of pop music itself. You see, Cornelius -- the moniker for Japanese one-man-band Keigo Oyamada -- is big in Japan, having sold half a million copies of "Fantasma," his third album, in his homeland. Given a stateside release, we get to hear what we've been missing out on: a brilliant, soaring symphony constructed out of pop touchstones in a way that's refreshing, freewheeling and, well -- you remember "fun" in pop music, don't you?" - Mark Athitakis (Salon)
DEVENDRA BANHART Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon - 2007 - CD - RM30
(XL Recordings)
"The mystical love-child of the nu-folk movement, Devendra Banhart exerts an inexplicable pull on the music world. People that don't like folk, like Devendra Banhart. People who think long-haired hippies belong in the sixties, like Devendra Banhart. People who think singer/songwriters belong in Room 101, still lap up anything by this free-spirited folkster.
Recorded late at night in the hills of hippy Californian haven, Topanga, it's infused with caffeine-fuelled nocturnal energy. Banhart dances from genre to genre, lingering long enough to record the odd ten minute epic and then skipping off again through reggae, rock, jazz and Latino rhythms. His distinctive, lilting growl guiding you through to this entrancing musical jumble." - BBC
EARTH Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method - CD - RM55 (Southern Lord)
"Over the past few years, Earth mastermind Dylan Carlson has become a cult icon amongst the metal elite; he has his own living tribute band (Sunn 0)))), receives glowing praise from the likes of Tool, Mastodon and Isis, and perhaps most importantly, there's an ever-growing legion of supporters begging him to wake his slumbering beast of a band. Though he and (now permanent) collaborator Adrienne Davis have toured sporadically over the years, the low-frequency Earth machine has lain dormant for the better part of a decade.
With drone-based metal (arguably) at its commercial and critical peak, there couldn't be a better time for Carlson and Davis to unleash Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method. It's a better-late-than-never move that should net Carlson a kingly piece of the drone death-march pie that so many have feasted upon in his absence. The downers still work to quell the pain of a sped-up existence, and the agonizingly measured deal that Carson made with the devil this time around seems guaranteed to leave a pile of bodies so big it's visible from space." - Splendid Ezine
"Widely considered their masterpiece, this 1984 tour de force introduced the immortal single "The Killing Moon." This expanded, remastered edition features eight bonus tracks, including three previously unreleased recordings.
Founded in 1978 and comprised of Ian McCulloch (vocals), Will Sergeant (guitars), Les Pattinson (bass), and Pete de Freitas (drums), Echo & The Bunnymen created a swirling fusion of gloomy postpunk and Doors-inspired psychedelia. They were key figures in the thriving club scene that put Liverpool on the pop map again for the first time since The Beatles. The Bunnymen rank among the most influential groups of the last two decades, their sound reverberating through acts as diverse as Pavement, The Flaming Lips, and Oasis." - Rhino
"With Liege & Lief, Fairport had invented British folk-rock in spectacular style. It was a milestone album for them, and an inspiration for many others. Even after more than thirty years, it is still one of the biggest-selling British folk albums, and has been consistently voted into 'Best of' lists by pundits and public alike.
For example, Q magazine feted Liege & Lief in their list of 'Best Folk Albums' list, describing it as "...consciously revivalist at a time when folk was drearily parochial, Liege & Lief revolutionised the genre. Swarbrick supplied the cachet, the band redefined the meaning of 'Trad Arr' and Sandy Denny sang like an angel. Folk-rock's defining moment." - Mark McCulloch
MARC ALMOND The Stars We Are - 1988 - CD - RM35 (Parlophone)
"Paring the Willing Sinners down from a sextet to a trio (and renaming the group La Magia), Almond recorded The Stars We Are, a sensual, romantic antidote to Mother Fist's bleak earthiness, lush with synthesized strings and horns. This is an essential album for those looking for insights into the Almond persona: "These My Dreams Are Yours" and "Bittersweet" both serve as apologias of sorts. A duet with Nico on "Your Kisses Burn" and an emotional rendition of Gene Pitney's "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" are also highlights." - Trouserpress
MAZZY STAR She Hangs Brightly CD - RM29 (Capitol)
"For all its slow, acoustic qualities, Mazzy Star could not be called folkie, however. Despite the band's snaillike pace, there's something inherently electric about Sandoval's ethereal vocals and the hypnotic strumming behind them. The music is a foreboding, sluggish swirl of dark sound and fragile melody, and the sentiments are, to put it mildly, bleak. The songs on She Hangs Brightly are undanceable, unhummable, yet compelling. Ultimately, Mazzy Star's hypnotic music, like Sandoval's voice, is as entrancing as the reflection of an ominous night sky on a lake. And its effect is just as disquieting." - RS
NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS The Best of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - 2xCD - RM45 (Mute)
Features a bonus CD, Live At The Royal Albert Hall, May 1997.
"This retrospective, spanning thirteen years and ten albums, is a series of map reference points from one of the most singular, and often extreme journeys in contemporary music. Though the tracks are not arranged chronologically, they trace a trajectory that began with the release of Nick Cave's first solo album, 'From Her to Eternity' in 1984, and continues apace with his most recent record, 1997's 'The Boatman's Call': sixteen songs that map out the contour of a bigger journey, a trawl through chaos and obsession, devotion and despair. A map of the human heart in extremis." _ CD Sleeve
NICK DRAKE Five Leaves Left CD - RM35 (Island)
Drake's debut album, released in 1969 and in five years, he's gone.
"Nick was in some strange way out of time. When you were with him, you always had a sad feeling of him being born in the wrong century. If he would have lived in the 17th century, at the Elizabethan Court, together with composers like Dowland or William Byrd, he would have been alright. Nick was elegant, honest, a lost romantic - and at the same time so cool. In brief: the perfect Elizabethan." - Robert Kirby, arranger, and friend of Nick Drake
NICO Chelsea Girl 1967 - CD - RM40 (Polydor)
"One of the greatest records of the 60s -- and a sublime debut from Nico, sounding fresher and less dreary here than on many of her later sides -- although still pretty chilling overall! The record features larger orchestral backings on most tracks -- never too heavy, but with light strings that really help Nico depart from the sound of her work with The Velvet Underground. This style adds a new level of sophistication to her vocals, and really helps in her interpretation of the unusual material culled for the set -- tunes that include a few key numbers by old partners in The Velvets, as well as some especially great tracks by a young Jackson Browne -- a romantic interest of Nico at the time! The whole thing's incredible -- on a par with the best from Scott Walker during the same stretch, although very different overall -- and a key entry in the darker side of the non-hippie end of the 60s spectrum. Titles include "These Days", "It Was A Pleasure Then", "Eulogy To Lenny Bruce", and the incredible title cut, "Chelsea Girls". Fantastic!." - DGA
PINK FLOYD The Piper At The Gates of Dawn - Remastered 1994 CD - RM40 (EMI)
"The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is Pink Floyd's debut album and the only one made under Syd Barrett's leadership, although he made some contributions to the follow-up, A Saucerful of Secrets. It has been regarded as one of the most influential albums ever made, being a tremendous influence on the psychedelic rock scene of the time and much of what followed." - wikipedia
Features tracks from the original UK release in 1967. A MUST HAVE!
==================================
& a few more in the shop. Just come around.
BTW; A full lits of over 400+ titles of CDs, Vinyls and more is being cooked at the moment. Sabar!!
Apa khabar good people!
It has been a while since we sent you anything! I know, it's a bit odd since we
have been
adding more and more of you into the list but there was no news forthcoming.
Well, things are changing. You will get a weekly report from our end from now
on.
Hopefully it wont take too much of your mailbox. And this is the first one.
Oh wait! We all are filled with much gratitude for you people for putting down
your
addresses on the mailing list. Thank YOU!
WHAT"S BEEN HAPPENING?
The shop underwent a bit of a shuffle recently. The core group of people taking
care of
the shop (me, Aiman & Bebe) is now being joined by another two. First, Encik
Shammir
who runs Basement Records (and many more sub-labels of the DIY punk rock
species).
Secondly, we got Encik Wan Hazril, a young man who have been running a very
successful
mail-order distro called Cactus Records.
So now we are five. And the shop has also been physically shuffled. The location
is still
the same but the layout of the store is now a lot more conducive for browsing.
Previously
it looked more like some cool kid's bedroom. Now it's optimised for full
consumer
experience!
Currently we have two sections. We created a room at the back of the store so
friends who
wanna hang out, have a discussions, use the computer etc. can sit themselves at
the back,
away from the browsing section. The store's info-shop/library and my cari-makan
workspace is gonna be there. My band can now jam behind there without disrupting
the
"traffic".
Surprisingly, the drastic "renovation" made the shop bigger! Come and check it
out soon.

Sorry, a bit rushed here but our band Carburetor Dung is playing a show tomorrow as a replacement for Indonesia's popsters White Shoes & The Couples Company who couldn't make it. We haven't played a proper gig since May last year!
This is more like a last minute switch to help our friends the organisers, but it should be fun!
Here's the flyer link:
The whole show will start at 1pm, but Carburetor Dung will be playing last, after a long line of many good and varied bands. So we may start hitting the stage between 8.30 and 9.30pm. Some of our t-shirts will be on sale at THE RICECOOKER SHOP's booth at the show.
Attached are the flyers, and the map:
Our version of the flyer:
note: that is an image ripped-off and altered from our good and scary Melbourne friends PISSCHRISTS.
Nice young people with very good table manners, that is if they are not too drunk lah. Expect warped and totally unrecognizable covers of ABBA and BONEY M. Well, I wish!
One of the most promising young singer-songwriters which hasn't gone into all that flashy KL fine-dining and expensive beer circuit. Bring freshly laundered hankies!
Yup, it's a hurriedly put together crew by our new friends. Singer & guitarist Anne is playing with The Venom Seeds back in the UK, drummer Dave is with one other band which I forgot, while the bassist has never played bass before! Cool!
The old farts will be back. No promises though, but if we do appear we'll try to do a few new tunes you've never heard before. We are currently taking loads of vitamins, so tak lah semput!
They were known once as Blister, now the name's gone longer and there's a nice all-smiling chick on keyboards. Swoonful melodies and swinging hips; indie-rock that will make you pop!
Old-school pop-rock/folk duo, one of the first to ditch the Top 40 pub circuit for a much more rewarding artistic pursuit. They have been DIY before you were born!
Damn fine young men with sensitive ears for melodies and rocking Bad Religious tunage. Lurked around for years but rarely seen in person. Men of mystery indeed.
Two handsome young boys with six-pack torsos who have a knack for covering the scene's old classics; priming and taming the beasts for a "wider audience"! Very marketable.
You know him already lah. I mean, even the nasty bouncers at the Zouk disco know him! A mighty star who brightens our lives with his witty mispronouncements!
Will be at service if there's time to spare. Started life as the frightening 667 - Neighbour of the Beast but now resigned to the fact that hitting perfect pitch is a fantasy.

PLUS +++
BAU_BAU MASSIVE! - Yup! There's a disco happening upstairs at the ol' cinema AKA ex-Liquid disko, organised by the Bau-Bau Massive! Bring your booty!
Squatterpunk tackles the life of youth in urban poor communities living the punk lifestyle. The film is set in the slums of Manila where law enforcement is rare. The camera follows the lives of the youth as they scavenge the garbage beach for a living while still managing to play around. Images of riot and poverty are set against the background of a loud musical score that makes the film wild, pulsating and certainly punk. Yet despite the exploitative connotations of its title, “Squatterpunk” casts a tenderly poetic eye at the squalor of Philippine society.
been tweaking the ricecooker portal so it'll be a one-click thing if you wanna check out some non-mainstream gigs & happenings round here in the next two. three weeks.
a multinational travelling pack of cycling clowns which has been going round the globe with the aim of triggering mirth and merriment to anyone, anywhere. And they play wicked, ultra-phat gypsy-jazz and cajun zydeco whatnots! A hoe-down is guaranteed!
KUCHALANA
local fusionistas, cooking dub-roots-reggae with the sneer of punk rock. Very elusive of late, and so this is one rare appearance, with a substitute drummer in tow.
a friend of ours at the OZ Hi-Com is organising this:

The Captain is Out to Lunch and the Sailors Have Taken Over the Ship
RM29.00
"Any collaboration between Charles Bukowski and R. Crumb is a notable
event. Each man is a consummate example of the anti-establishment
artist who calls society to task for its foibles and failures. With
humor and scathing satire Bukowski and Crumb have exemplified this
important tradition. These unpublished last journals by Bukowski
candidly detail the events of his daily life, which R. Crumb has
brilliantly illustrated with five full color hand printed serigraphs
and six full page black-and-white illustrations."

open ended story with layers upon layers of meaning. By the final
pages, you'll be almost breathless.

Italo Calvino
If on a Winter's Night a Traveller (Paperback)
RM19.00
"For those with an amorous affair with books, this may, perhaps, be
the ultimate love letter to the reader. Calvino's novel, or more
precisely, his book of ten interrelated stories, is both masterfully
created and startlingly unique. Told alternately in second and third
persons, the book is a fascinating exploration of the relationship
between the author and the reader. Flawlessly composed, the novel
weaves together seemingly unrelated tales, all of which relate
directly to you, the reader. At its core is an ingenious concept the
likes of which could have only come from the unparalleled imagination
of Calvino. By the time you reach its dazzling conclusion, you'll be
wishing you could somehow read it again for the very first time."

Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture
RM28.00
The novel, consisting of mostly brief anecdotes, portrays the
economically bleak and emotionally taut lives of three friends who try
to escape the overly commercialized world by living simply in
California's Mojave Desert. The often biting, ironic tone of the novel
and its pop culture allusions helped bring about a new era of
transgressional fiction, including the work of authors Irvine Welsh
and Chuck Palahniuk.

Gloom Cookie #1 & #2 (Comics)
RM 15.00 (for both)
"GLOOMCOOKIE is the cartoon series that Beetlejuice watches late at
night when he can't sleep. Like Wednesday Addams' wet dream, or that

surreal world. Mostly because I know the creators, I know that it
smacks of experience and heartfelt feelings..."

Violent Cases (Graphic Novel)
RM30.00
Violent Cases is a short graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman and
illustrated by Dave McKean. For both creators it was their first
published work in comics. First published in black and white by Titan
Books in 1987, it was originally drawn in shades of blue, brown and
grey, and later editions have been printed in colour.
A narrator, who is drawn to look like Gaiman, tells of how, as a small
child in Portsmouth, he was taken by his father to be treated by an
osteopath who was once employed by Al Capone. The nature of the
narrator's relationship with his father, the tales the osteopath told,
and the disturbing events that followed, are partially obscured by the
narrator's imperfect recall of things he was not old enough to
understand at the time.

Creatures of the Night (hardcover)
RM25.00
Newly rewritten by Gaiman for this graphic novel, these two ominous
stories from the author's award-winning prose, Smoke and Mirrors:
Short Fictions and Illusions, feature animals and people not being
quite what they seem. In "The Price," a black cat like a small panther
arrives at a country home and is soon beset by mysterious and vicious
wounds. What is he fighting every night that could do this, and why
does he persist? "The Daughter of Owls" recounts an eerie old tale of
a foundling girl who was left - with an owl pellet - as a newborn on
the steps of the Dymton Church. She was soon cloistered away in a
local convent, but by her fourteenth year word of her beauty had
spread - and those who would prey upon her faced unforeseen
consequences.

We have an urgent appeal which we hope you or your networks can respond to. The information is below. If you are able to help in any way at all, please contact Harun of Tenaganita (019-3691789) who is coordinating this mission.

Humanitarian Emergency Appeal: Food Supplies for 1000 Stranded Bangladeshi Migrant Workers in Cameron Highlands
Tenaganita has been informed of the plight of almost 1000 Bangledeshi workers who are without jobs short of food.
They were brought into Malaysia under an outsourcing company in the promise of jobs at nursery and vegetables farm in Cameron Highlands.
The groups, each comprising of 50-100 Bangladeshi men, are being held either in plantations or farms in or around Teluk Intan (Perak), Cameron Highlands (Pahang), Klang (Selangor) and Gua Musang (Kelantan).
Tenaganita has already established contact and each group was given 20kg of rice, 1kg of onions, 1 bag of dhall and cooking oil last week. No gas or fuel is provided. The workers themselves scavenge for fire-wood to cook their meals. Currently they don˘t have even food.
DONATIONS:
We are asking for donors to fund towards the buying of foodstuff to relief the hunger of the workers and any other necessities for the workers.
FACT-FINDING:
Tenaganita will also meet the groups, and document their situation through interviews and with audio/visual and photos evidence. We then aim to come up with a media campaign, to make known that these abuses take place and hopefully to make them aware to speak out against it.
We will also go to the various authorities to confirm these abuses and to ask them to take concrete measures. We will also investigate the operations of these employment agents.
We know the trail goes back to Bangladesh, and with these data, we hope to work closely with their local NGOs to make certain their citizens don˘t fall prey to false promises.
The team of volunteers is going for our first fact-finding trip on April 7 Saturday, to Teluk Intan where 84 workers are placed in without food and subsequently the team will visit the various places of Cameron Highlands.
On behalf of Tenaganita and our volunteers, we thank you for your donations. We will update you on the situation from time to time.

Embodying the spirit of sharing, creating and giving, this festival will go on for 16 days from 21st July to 5th August 2007. notthatbalai Art Festival has the opportunity to work in different venues and getting the chance to work with other individuals and art groups. This art festival will consist of visual arts, music and performance, film screenings and flea market stalls.
Why notthatbalai
“Balai” refers to a space, place or institution that organises programmes. This title reflects our belief that artists should try to organise our own events, exhibitions and happenings which can convey our own themes, ideas and concerns. By doing this, we believe that art festivals or events can be done anywhere at anytime for everyone. “notthatbalai”hopes to promote and stimulate more alternative art activities.
Theme
SAMA-SAMA
The theme of notthatbalai 2007 is ‘Sama-Sama’. Sama-Sama is a Malay word that means: same, altogether, synchronize, mutual, participation, neutral, at the middle, equality with others in movement, value, status, situation, etc.
‘Sama-Sama’ also means ‘you’re welcome’ in daily practice. It’s a manner to denote ‘Sama-Sama’ after connote ‘terima kasih’ (thank you). It refers to the context of gratitude, tolerance, equality, respect and oneness.
Relationship of artist, society and living environment as a whole strongly reflected the theme “SAMA-SAMA”. Nowadays, our living society is full of imbalance of power, natural disaster, and injustice of political parties. Art is the visual way of expression that address human’s deepest feeling. It is showing aesthetical values, mediates certain information to the observer, increase understanding, propose changes and create hopes. The artworks might be inspired by happenings in society and surrounding environments and vice versa, it is an open door for the members of society to perceive the world either critically or harmoniously. Artworks that are deconstructive, contradict, ambiguous, inspiring, soul stirring, come straight to the point and implies culture and ethnic identification would be the biggest approach of notthatbalai art festival 2007.
Furthermore, we hope to cross the boundaries of arts in different fields, collective, ages, status, relations and build up a network in order to create a platform that we can ‘Sama-Sama’ exchange and share thoughts, help and link everyone.

In late 2003, rasta performance poet Benjamin Zephaniah got an invite to receive the title OBE or “Officer of the Order of the British Empire” from the Queen of England. Here’s his reply:
“Me? I thought, OBE me? Up yours, I thought. I get angry when I hear that word “empire”; it reminds me of slavery, it reminds of thousands of years of brutality, it reminds me of how my foremothers were raped and my forefathers brutalised.”
